Coastguards Lantern Camber Sands
Stay at Coastguards Lantern and discover a landscape full of myth's and legends, surrounded by the haunting loneliness of Romney Mash. A flat, open landscape of wide skies and fields criss-crossed by a lattice of drainage ditches, where yellow waterlilies float in early summer, it offers the opportunity to wander quiet lanes and paths and to visit some of its famous medieval churches and the vast stretch of historic invasion coast.
Built in this secluded spot, to help guard against smuggling and invasion, this beautiful renovated coastguard cottage is the perfect location for a holiday away from the hustle and bustle of modern life.

Right beside the sea, near the village of Camber, and with views in every direction, Coastguards Lantern is a special, recently renovated holiday cottage surrounded by wild beauty. To one side is SSSI-designated marshland (Site of Special Scientific Interest). To the other, the sea, so seclusion is a given. Yet you are only a few minutes' drive to the medieval Cinque Port town of Rye for shops, pubs and restaurants.
Coastguards Lantern is a modified traditional coastguards cottage with modern updates layered over its 143-year-old bones. As soon as you step inside, you will note the careful attention paid to this home's renovation.
Dining & Lounging
The newly equipped open plan kitchen/dining room has everything you'll need to prepare lovely meals, including a beautiful Range cooker, Nespresso Coffee Machine, breakfast bar and farmhouse dining table. Why not visit Rye and buy locally caught seafood fresh from the boat? Or some Romney Marsh lamb from the local butchers? Beside The Sea Holidays will be more than happy to recommend our favourites!
After dinner, cosy down on the comfy sofas in the lounge and watch the flames dance in the log burning stove—the centrepiece of this lovely space.
Bed & Bath
Upstairs you'll find a stunning and modern bathroom with a secret: a customised bath set high enough for sea views to accompany your soothing soak. Dare we say with a glass of wine as an accompaniment? How perfect is that?
The large, comfortable master bedroom has a super king-size bed and unspoilt views over the sheep-studded marsh where the local smugglers plied their trade.
The second bedroom has two 3ft beds and a stunning view of the sea, plus a small flat screen TV with DVD, just in case you ever tire of watching the waves and sunset!
Outdoors
The cottage has a decked south-facing and quiet garden, the perfect place to relax after a day of coastal hikes and historical sites. The pebble beach is mere steps away, with a paved boardwalk spanning its length for sand-and-stone-free jogs. Do as much or as little as you like here, with only the crackle of the fire and the crash of the waves to interrupt the quiet.
Other things to note Sea Defence Works and Nearby Military Firing Range
Our properties are situated near the Lydd Ranges, a historic military firing range that has been in use for over 150 years. This unique area is also a nature reserve and part of the Dungeness, Romney Marsh, and Rye Bay Site of Special Scientific Interest, home to incredibly rare plants and animals. While this adds to the natural beauty and significance of the area, it also means that certain times the ranges won't be accessible to walk along. Don't worry as there will still be several miles of beach to walk along as you head to Camber.
Military Firing Range Information:
Access to the foreshore is occasionally restricted due to live firing exercises. Red flags are flown during these times, indicating that access is prohibited for safety reasons.
When firing is not taking place, it may be possible to walk along a designated path along the shore, offering a chance to enjoy this unique environment.
The cottage features a kitchen and space to spread out with 2 bedrooms. The cottage also includes a washing machine.

Not as romantic as it seems
The pictures show a lovely house on an isolated location, very close to the beach. In real this part cannot be used for swimming. The house is located next to a military area, fences everywhere.
The kitchen was not clean, every handle was sticky as well as the counter and the table.
So far the downsides: the
Upsides: the interior is very cosy, the double bed is very comfortable and there is a good shower.

Nice cottage
Nice cottage, lovely inside and well equipped. Shame about the area surrounding the cottage, building works on the beach front walk. Good direct access to the beach but the tides mean they are only accessible early morning and late afternoon.

Great location, warm and welcoming house, we will be back!
We loved the location. A very short walk to the beach, no roads to cross. Perfect with a young or older member of our family. It was very quiet, felt like we had our own private beach.
We cycled into the main part of Camber beach for eating out, and was able to enjoy the best of both worlds.
The house was well stocked, from the kitchen to the bedrooms. With amazing views from each window.
Our dog was very relaxed in the garden, and he loved being off lead on the beach.
We will definitely return soon.

Delightful cottage in a great location
Well looked after and fitted out and very comfortable and clean. Clear instructions with no problems. Appreciated the little touches like fresh milk in the fridge and handmade cake and biscuits on the kitchen table. Found the Derek Jarman's Garden book in the bookshelf and went to visit it. If you want a few days to explore the unique environment that is Dungeness and its surrounds, you won't fine a better base to do it from. Had a great time..

Lovely house, a few disappointments at the price
A fabulous situation and a well equipped house. Attractively decorated, great bathroom. But some disappointments. Heating not on when we arrived late Friday, so the first evening we were miserably cold as house slowly warmed up. No wood for the wood burner - though note said there would be some. Lovely bed and bedroom, but in cold house with no hot water bottle or electric blanket, it was perishing. Thermostat must be set at an eco regulated temperature: so bath water borderline tepid.
No welcome pack at all - we had brought our own coffee, wine and milk, but next day wanted a cup of tea and not a tea bag to be found. No ordnance survey map - except on wall. Maybe people take them? But so useful. Sadly, major sea wall works and army actively shooting on the range blighted coastal walk to Dungeness and view towards sea from house.
None of this too important - but it's not a cheap cottage, so I think we expected a bit more.

Fabulous Cosy Cottage and Wonderful Beach
We recently enjoyed a great week's stay at Lantern Coastguard's Cottage in Jury's Gap. The cottage itself is gorgeous - really comfortable beds, cosy wood-burning stove, lovely shower/bath and very well-equipped kitchen, etc. There is everything you are likely to need, including TV, DVD, XBox and board games if the weather turns bad. But in fact, the beach (just a few metres away from the cottage) is wonderful whatever the weather and we enjoyed many hours in our wellies there, even in February. Communication with the owner is great and the whole booking/arrival process stress-free. Thank you for a relaxing week (but don't tell everyone!)
