+2 Centigrade we we arrived after 9pm. piles of snow left over from their winter still abounded but the room was well heated. the room had a microwave and a hob, oven and even a fridge! Hardly a necessity around here at this time of year! Not the most modern of places but it did the job.
We just had breakfast in Aakenus. The food was ok and does not differ much from typical hotel breakfasts but the atmosphere and environment was just like in Kaurismäki movies. I liked especially home made cakes and buns. Some does not like the environment but others may enjoy it!
It is located about 700m from the town centre. The Arktikum (about 1 km away) and the railway station (about 1.5 km away) are within walking distance. The room was clean and tidy, and spacious to house twin beds. Basic facilities were available and breakfast was adequate for a morning walk. Though I stayed for only 1 night, I found the staff very friendly.
The room and hotel were clean but furnishings were tired and dated. It was actually kind of depressing, especially after a full day of traveling and you just want to get to your hotel and relax, it wasn't very inviting. The staff was friendly enough, but when we asked the lady at the desk for help to get the TV working we were met with a big sigh and felt like we were disturbing her as she stomped up the stairs to our room. She fixed the TV but it was awkward, and why wasn't the TV working properly in the first place? The breakfast buffet was decent, I didn't love the food but that wasn't the hotel's fault. The dining room was equally dated and as depressing as the lobby and rooms. Everything was clean though, no complaints about that. The hotel was also gracious enough to hold our bags in a secured room (for free) after we checked out but still had several hours before we had to catch our transfer, that was a nice touch. It was a short walk to the center of town so location was fine, but for a few dollars more you can stay in a nicer hotel right in the town center.
Just returned from a 4 night stay in apartment 5. Kymppi which was rented to us by hotelli aakenus. Great location on a residential street a few mins walk from the hotel. 10 min walk from the centre of town with restaurants and shops. 10min drive to santa clause village and 10min drive to oonasvara ski resort. So very local to everything. Can also walk to bus stop and go further a field to likes of Ranua zoo. The house was decent. Great for groups, 4 bedrooms with 8 beds, 2 toilets and kitchen facilities. Not luxury but the beds were comfy enough to sleep in, the kitchen appliances all worked and everything was in good condition and a great place to socialise with beers and a game of cards in the evening. Downstairs bedrooms looked a lot more homely then upstairs. The place was never cold. Nice sauna facilities. Would recommend rolling in the snow after. You have your own backyard too with sledges and bbq. It was useful that we had the hotel connection as it gave us our own personal house but the benefits of a hotel calling taxis etc for us and when we thought the sauna was broken someone walked down within half hour to fix it. Turns out we hadn't turned it on properly. My only criticism would be that the towels and linen were a bit grubby looking. You could tell they had been washed prior to our visit but some had been permanently stained by previous guests. So would probably bring own towel and pillow covers if to stay again. Nothing major amd they do have a washing machine if you want to give a wash for peace of mind. I'm a little fussy in these areas. I stay in a lot of hotels for work and holiday a couple of times a year so am used to a high standard of accommodation but was travelling with friends who had lower budgets. They were all happy with the place. I would recommend it and it is good value if you are looking to prioritise your money on activities. I think the property was on par with what I paid to stay there.
Comfortable hotel, short walking distance to the centre of town, wrap up warm though! Good wifi and buffet breakfast. The staff were helpful. We only stayed for one night, the room was ready upon arrival as we arrived from an overnight train from Helsinki. Good wifi.
Overpriced for the service, food & hotel standards. Cramped room. Constantly wet toilet. Lousy service. Weak Wi-Fi. Definitely not hotel standards! Choose any hotel other than Aakenus please if you don't wanna drag yourself back to your room after a great day out. There was a night when I went to the reception to ask if the WiFi is working? She said Yes & I told her I couldn't get the connection at all. Her reply was "There's nothing I can do!"
I stayed here from 20 -24 December 2016. I stayed in room 213. I never review hotels but I am compelled to do this review. The good: The middle aged lady at reception: Extremely helpful and friendly. The bad: The intermittent wi-if. They advertise the hotel with free wi-if. A word of caution - it hardly ever works! We had to ask repeatedly for the wi-if to be fixed. At best it funtioned for maybe an hour. House keeping: Hands down the WORST hotel I have ever stayed at, and I travel extensively! In the 4 days we were there, my room or bathroom was not cleaned ONCE! They made bed, but that was all. The floor was so dirty you could not walk bare feet on it and used cutlery and crockery was not ever removed. Management: I informed the hotel 6 weeks before our arrival that we were only two people instead of three traveling and I requested a refund on the third person's room (we made a fully paid booking). At 200 USD per person per night I find this hotel a complete rip-off for the shoddy service. Take your money somewhere else!!
Am writing this from the lobby of the hotel. Stayed here for two nights with my wife and daughter. The hotel is fairly basic and does kind of have a college dorm like feel to it. However, it was very comfortable-my room had two separate sleeping areas with two separate showers and bathrooms. The beds were quite comfortable and the breakfast was excellent with oatmeal, eggs, cold cuts, cereal and cheeses. The wifi worked very well and is free. The hotel is located about a five minute walk from downtown Rovaniemi. The staff was wonderful-especially the two ladies working nights. We talked for a long time and they were great. We arrived from Levi, which really has the things to do and see. Yes, we stayed here for Santa Village. From the hotel, you make a 7 minute walk to the bus stop, which for a few Euros takes you there in about 10 minutes. Rovaniemi itself was not very impressive-had kind of a bland and basic feel to it with a basic mall that is a couple of minutes from the hotel. Absent the Santa Attractions, does not seem to be much to see.
Excellent service and clean rooms , my family and me enjoyed this place, the staff were so kindly and support me all the time with information about safaris and tours, I recommend you if you come to rovaniemi book this hotel.
