Birchwood Spa Motel

This would have to be the most disgusting, dirty accommodation I've ever stayed in. The list of issues is huge, but to name a few; mold in the bathroom, hair from the previous guests shaver on the soap holder in the shower, remnants of the last guests soap there also.....the dust and hair on the bathroom floor which was grimy....the smell was terrible and likely came from the moldy curtains and mold around the windows...I could go on, but hopefully this is enough to help you avoid booking this place. I raised concerns with staff and was advised that they would talk to the cleaner. Nothing was done to remedy the situation.

This place has negative reviews for a reason. The reason, in my opinion, is that it is a budget hotel (tired, unkempt, outdated, basic) that charges and advertises itself as a 4 star. I stayed here for 3 nights for a work conference. It was warm, adequate and relatively quiet. I would compare it to the Kiwi Motel in Auckland, which advertises itself (from memory) as a 2 star ($80ish per night). Birchwood however, charged my work more than what it costs to stay in The Hilton at Lake Taupo. Go figure.

We stopped in one of the 2-bedroom luxury apartments at this motel for 2 nights (Saturday and Sunday). It had a good, clean shower; beds were clean and comfortable; and the property was within walking distance to the thermal area – although shops were not within walking distance. It had a reasonable size single vehicle garage with functioning electric door opener (no remote opener provided). We considered the property to be poorly maintained and fell well-short of the 'Luxury Apartment' title. On arrival the milk we were given was not in an unopened sealed container. We also found 3 non-functioning lights requiring bulbs to be replaced. None of the thermostats on the ceramic hob worked – elements were on ‘full’ all the time. The refrigerator setting was too high and even when set to the ‘warmest’ setting it froze everything (eggs, vegetables, milk etc). We saw no cleaning staff during our stay and we had to request clean towels and tea-towels. The microwave was poorly positioned making it difficult to use. Blinds had broken or bent slats, missing winders, knotted strings for lifting and lowering and bedroom curtains were faded. There was a dishwasher (which we did not expect) and this operated best on the ‘intense’ setting (otherwise dishes were not dried properly). Overall, the property appears ‘run down’ and poorly maintained. We would not recommend it – especially to guests who plan to self-cater.

My wife and I stayed here for 4 nights. The room was furnished and equipped in a comfortable and functional way, and the bed was comfortable and clean. The cleanliness of the bathroom and shower was reasonable. The manager Mr. Ocean Lio and his wife Cathy wan were very nice and answered all our questions and requests with courtesy, joy and lightness. We would be happy to be back.

For $200 a night I felt the room was poorly looked after and the owners just don't care gardens not looked after garage has holes in the wall exposed waste pipes caped with duck tape. Also found empty pizza box from last guests. Stains on the carpet. Bathroom floor needs a good scrub.

We stayed for 1 night, the place was clean, but the bathroom absolutely needs updating, actually all of the unit, spa was nice though, bit expensive for what you get, the bed where also to soft for our liking

The service was terrible. Not friendly. Shower still had a used bar of soap with hair on it. Room service was minimal and didn't include tidying bed or used dishes. Very cold at night so when we asked for a blanket, he said I need to check in your room before I give you one cause I don't believe it's not there. Walked into room to inspect whether or not we needed one. The upkeep of the room and spa area is quite bad. Floors need to have the black dirt marks cleaned and at least top up the spa bubble bath (was completely empty). Disappointed.

Shocking. Dirty, dirty, dirty. The place is dark and in bad state. We just could not stay here I would rather have slept in the car. I would not recommend this place at all. The place needs a good scrub and in good need of fixing up i side.

Stayed here only one night on road trip around NZ. Luckily the motel is 800metres from Te Are where we planned to visit. Took five minutes to walk there. Basic motel. Bath dirty and furnishings old and tired but staff friendly and accomodating. Visited hotel next door for evening meal which was great.

To start with the greeting at reception was not friendly, just a sign, here and here, do you want a jug of milk and here is your key! Also the full charge was already made to our credit card and I wonder what would have happened if I had cancelled? The room was big (slept 6) and roomy however it is in dire need of a damn good clean. Dirt in the corners and edges of the floor in the bathroom, dust/dirt on the skirtings that looked like they hadn't had a clean in months. The outside of the base of the shower had leaked and was pretty grubby with a bit of mould as was a cupboard in the kitchen. The kitchen tap was loose and was starting to swing around when the tap was turned on or off. The windows upstairs were dirty inside and out and the area where the spa is has weeds coming through the pavers. A good chem wash and a tidy up of the gardens and communal would do some good but a total refurb inside is needed. The motel is also on a very busy road and traffic (big trucks) rumbles by all day and night and with only single glazing it gets pretty noisy.
