We stayed here two nights and had a wonderful experience. Smallish hotel, but fantastic rooms and amenities. Great breakfasts, and a small selection of choices for an evening meal in the hotel (all great though). Owners were friendly and helpful and I would highly recommend if you are looking for peace and quiet and a great quality hotel. This is a few minutes down an unpaved road (as were all the other hotels!) so you will either need a 4x4 or drive slowly in a conventional car - well worth it though
We stayed in the hotel on our way from the Westman Islands. Very convenient and beautiful location. Looks like an Icelandic farmhouse from the outside but lovely, new, and modern on the inside. Rooms were comfortable and quiet.
The hotel was comfortable, clean and the food was good. It is very close to the ferry to the Westmann Islands (maybe 15 minute drive) and the Seljalandsfoss waterfall. Great spot to stay if you are touring the South Coast. Highly recommend.
traveling can be very stressful, particularly when things don’t go to plan, like when your flight gets cancelled and you can’t make it to your dream vacation in iceland. when things like this happen it’s nice to have booked with understanding and accommodating service providers who want to help you instead of making things worse. ALEX AND THE HOTEL SELJA MAKE THINGS WORSE!!! keep this in mind before you book here. there are plenty of other options in the area that i’m sure have their customer’s best interest in mind unlike Alex and the hotel Selja. all you need to know: 1. I booked 1 night at the hotel selja on a non-refundable rate through hotels.com (this was the only option, it was not by choice) 2. my flight was cancelled preventing me from making it to iceland. 3. i began making arrangements to go to iceland the following weekend and checked to see if the hotel Selja had vacancy. they did. 4. I reached out to hotel Selja and, understanding that is was a non-refundable rate, requested that my booking be moved, not cancelled, to the following weekend, which would cost them NOTHING, but would significantly help me out. please understand I did NOT ask for a refund per the terms of my booking. 5. Alex, the hotel manager, responded and claimed hotels.com wouldn’t allow the rebooking. this turned out to be a lie. 6. I contacted hotels.com and they were happy to work with me and even called Alex as a courtesy. they also confirmed hotel Selja had vacancy on the day I requested. 7. Alex again refused to rebook me despite it being at no cost to hotel Selja. 8. I reached back out to Alex and explained the full situation again and asked him to make an exception, again considering it would cost his hotel NOTHING. 9. Alex then proceeded to argue with me for 3 days, hammering home the non-refundable policy, but ignoring the fact that I didn’t ask for a refund and that it would cost his hotel NOTHING to rebook me. So, Alex and the hotel Selja clearly don’t understand the service industry, which is based on helping people and making their lives easier particularly when things don’t go to plan. Alex makes things harder on you when he could be making things easier, even when it’s at no cost to his hotel. so having never actually stayed at his hotel, Alex made an already nightmarish travel experience WAY worse and for no other reason than bc he could. and that’s borderline sadistic. think about this before booking at hotel Selja. there are other options.
Hotel Selja looks modest from the outside but is lovely within. Two km up a gravel road from the ring road south of Hvolsvollur, it sits alone in a flat plain with open views to the east of glaciers and mountains. Try to get a room on that side! The hotel is small, only 12 cozy rooms, but they are tastefully done in a modern minimalist way. From what I can tell it just opened, everything is gleaming new. They serve a generous and delicious buffet breakfast, included with the room. Very convenient location if you are hiking in Thorsmork, or plan to head east to see the glaciers.
Everything about our stay here was perfect. Great location to see lots of the waterfalls, close enough to restaurants, and a serene view. The place was hospital-grade clean, had tons of USBs and adapters for tourists who came unprepared, and the breakfast was amazing. All the staff were very friendly...the kind of people you would want to share a bottle of wine and great conversation with :) All around fantastic base location to stay while you see the sights of the south.
Alex and Paula have really done a marvellous job in tastefully setting this place up. Perfect location with a view of the volcano that sent up the massive Ash cloud. Alex is a guide and has made a list of all attractions and hikes around the area.
So one of the things people often say about Iceland is you don't go for the food. But the owners of Hotel Selja turn that around. Alex and Paula are lovely hosts and they serve delicious meals; we had dinner here twice. On top of that, the hotel is located very close to the the glacier and the Selfalandsfoss waterfalls. The rooms are colorful, clean and comfortable - (nice alliteration). This place is a great option for anyone heading to this part of the south.
This was a very modern and new hotel, even though you wouldn’t know when you first drive up. Great morning breakfast. Great views and we would surely stay again...... thank you again for a wonderful stay
This looks a bit like a farm building from the outside so we were not sure we were in the right place - despite the signs as it was on a gravel road. However inside was really lovely. Very modern, clean and comfortable. We thought it must be brand new. Breakfast was great, the staff friendly, great shower, fluffy towels and comfy bed. Good blackout blinds made for a good nights sleep too. Brilliant find and so glad we found this I would def recommend it
