What a hassle!

I reserved this property for 12/27-12/31, but when I arrived on 12/27 there were others staying at the house. Apparently it was double booked for that night. This was blamed on the VRBO booking software. The host kept saying "you can cancel without penalty" like he didn't care if we stayed there. We were in Durham for my daughter's wedding so had other things to attend too. The house was dusty and the floors were dirty and there was hair wafting around in the bedrooms. There was very little furniture in the bedrooms and no where to put clothes, etc. (Note the floor was dirty!!) Also there were several messages via the app about using the keypad to get in but apparently it has not worked for over a year. We had to use the lock box and keep the key in there. Inconvenient when there were multiple adults coming and going. Overall the attitude of the host was very off putting and this was a very anxiety producing experience. Can't recommend the property and doubt that I will book with VRBO again.

Great Thanksgiving

This quirky old house was perfect for spending time with our adult children over the holiday weekend. The large dining table is awesome! We will definitely rent this place again if we have the opportunity.

Not recommended

We stayed in this house on the weekend of Good Friday/Easter. Although it was adequate for our party of 8, none of us can recommend this house for the following reasons: -The front door was propped open and a space heater was on in the living room, although it was a mid-70's day at check in time. When we tried to close the door, it would not latch. No one was on site and there was no communication or explanation for this. -About an hour later, a gentleman from a landscaping company arrived (unannounced) to repair the door. He did an adequate job (we could now latch the door), but the door jam is very sketchy and gave us us no sense of security. -There was cat hair on one of the beds, and a human hair within the sheets. -The sheets for the office/den sofa bed were wadded up in the living room closet. We were not confident they were clean. We put all the sheets through the washer - but there was no detergent on site, so it was just a rinse. I sent a message to the owner (Brad) and he replied within about 45 minutes via a phone call. He left me with the distinct impression that he had no idea (or explanation) about the front door and heater. He said that someone from "the team" must've discovered a problem and took action. When I explained the hair & dirty sheets issues, he offered to try to connect with "the team" and have someone stop-by. We were out for the evening and I declined; we had already lost any faith in the property management team. Brad asked me to take pictures and send to him, so he could share with "the team" to be sure this didn't happen to future guests. No apology, no offer of credit; even after sending the pictures. He went so far as to tell me that some of the pictures were not of this property! The house is dirty and a bonus was dried cat barf on the front door sill; the security of the door is sketchy; if you open the windows, the sills are filthy and moldy; there is a hole in a bedroom door; and, there was garbage in the parking area (has been there a while) around the dumpster. I wish I could post pictures in this review. Perception is reality. Brad makes it sound as though this "team" is a well-oiled machine. The reality is that it is not. Brad needs to pay attention to the details and learn a little humility - an apology goes a long way.

Fitzgerald Christmas at Historic Fitzgerald

This was the perfect spot for our family Christmas get together. Great space for lots of food, fellowship and fun. The location was ideal and thanks to excellent weather we were even able to get outside and sit on the porch. The house had such character and charm. We would definitely consider staying again if the need arises.

Some pluses and minuses

The pluses: We loved the location of the property and that it was a stone's throw from a cool and trendy restaurant (Grub Durham). The house layout worked well for our family (despite there not being a bathroom on the main level). The beds were soooo incredibly comfortable - probably the most comfortable beds we have ever slept on! The minuses: The property manager was very responsive when it came to booking the property and letting us know that our check in had to be delayed an hour. However, he was not responsive to questions during our stay. It took 2 days to find out what to do with trash/recycling. The main bathtub barely drained, so we all ended up showering in the master bathroom, which was not convenient. And, on the last day of our stay, we discovered mouse droppings on the kitchen floor. They were also in some of the food bags that we brought :( Fortunately we didn't know about the mice until we were about to check out.

Great space in a great place.

We had such a wonderful stay here. It is close to so many go Durham’s great restaurants and activities. The space inside the house is wonderful and well kept; the beds were comfortable; the rules were easy to follow. And the house belonged to one of Pauli Murray’s ancestors!
