This past September my husband and I traveled to Sicily (our third trip in 6 years). We had the privilege of staying at the Torre Don Virgilio Country Hotel which was built in the 1700’s in southeast Sicily. The location is perfect for exploring the Baroque cities of Modica, Noto and Ragusa and close to the fantastic golden beaches. The roads were very easy to drive with little traffic which my husband loved. The property is surrounded by olive trees which are used to produce olive oil onsite. It was perfect in so many ways. The setting was spectacular in an ancient fortified farmhouse surrounded by a lush green countryside. We walked through the century old olive groves, relaxed by the beautiful pool and enjoyed the delicious breakfast and dinner. The fresh ingredients are so typical Sicilian. We loved our room which was so charming with white stone rooms decorated with such warmth. The beds are very comfortable which is very important to us. After exploring the areas during the day we would return to this peaceful setting. We especially enjoyed the town of Modica. We loved walking around this medieval city. The baroque cathedral was spectacular. We are real foodies so the culinary specialties were incredible especially the famous chocolate. Thank you dear Gabriele and Frederica for your gracious help, kindness and hospitality. We would definitely recommend Torre Don Virgilio Country Hotel and plan on returning soon.
My family stayed here for 3 days during a Sicilian vacation and I was quite impressed. The long hours of travelling were well worth it once we arrived here. I loved the quiet and antique vibe of the poolside area. Walking through the olive grooves and sunbathing next to the pool were highlights of the stay. The lunch and dinner service were very good and the dinner staff had exceptional attention to detail. Our room was refreshing due to the centuries old brick foundation which is not a common sight in most hotels I frequent. The towns near the hotel are also filled with history and good food. If I am ever in the area again I will gladly be coming back!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this historic, beautifully appointed hotel. After touring busy Syracuse and Catania, it was wonderful to relax in the tranquil countryside. The staff were kind and attentive to our many requests. The food was simply delicious. We definitely recommend this hotel for those looking for a well-appointed, relaxing place with great staff!
We stayed here for one week on our trip through Sicily and what a great surprise. After traveling for a few weeks this was a touch of paradise. The restful and peaceful surroundings were perfect for us. We had walks through the olive grooves and relaxed by the beautiful pool and did a lot of reading. The breakfast was very nice with lots of local items such as fruit and pastries and great coffee. Some of our days were spent traveling in the local area to Modica, Noto, Cava, and Ragusa. There is so much to see and learn about the areas history, and not to be missed were the beautiful beaches in the area. But the best part was returning each day to this quiet, beautiful and restful estate. Of coarse then there was dinner. The dinners were very romantic and delicious, mostly typical Sicilian and that is the best. Last I must compliment the supper staff as they were very welcoming and attentive to our every need. They brought us extra towels and extra pillows as we requested and did it with a smile. They made our stay very special. Yes we will return and it will be soon. I can still hear the sounds of the country life.
We had organised a trip to Sicily via an agent. We thought the hotel was near Modica but actually turned out to be further outside. The first thing that struck us when arriving was that it did not appear to be open. The entrance did not give a welcoming feel behind electric gates and signage that needed to be upgraded. On arrival we were told that there was no restaurant despite their advertising one and our checking before arrival. You need to be aware of this or else you could go hungry. They did recommend a couple of places but all the same travel is needed. The room was compact with fridge and aircon. The shower worked well but the toiletries did not all look fresh, one in particular. There was also insufficient towel hanging space. Breakfast was ok with Sicilian specialities and fresh fruit salad. Crisp croissant and natural yogurt.
The accommodation was billed as a cottage for 4 people. On arrival, we were shown to the cottage nearest the car park, even though we were staying 4 nights. There were 2 rooms, one double and 1 only single. The fourth person had to sleep in a pull out bed in the living room. The sofa was right near the front door, so when it was opened it blocked the entry. There was only one bathroom and this was on the ground floor. Not ideal if you needed to use the bathroom in the night. There was no other comfortable seating other than the pull out sofa so when we sat together we had to sit on the stairs as the table was not comfortable to sit for long periods. The bedrooms had only small windows at floor level. There is no airconditioning so the apartment was very stuffy. There was a table outside but it was in the full sun for most of the day so we couldn't really sit there. There was no shade. Even though there was a mini kitchen- and this featured in the photos provided by the site, they only provided 2 glasses. No cutlery, no plates etc even though there was a hot plate. there was no kettle to make a cup of tea. The dining room only appeared to be open for breakfast and lunch. When you came home there was no possibility of a drink or snacks. You couldn't really buy your own as there were no plates or glasses. The property was extremely remote. Internet was very slow and spotty. The breakfast was ordinary. There were not hot options offered- just continental options. For the price I don't think it was great value.
We have rent an appartment in this resort for one week. It was a nice appartment with two bedrooms. Airco and wifi worked very well. It is a good place to visit all the nice places in the environment and after this to relax on the country side. It is about 15 minutes driving to Modica. We appreciated the garden and the swimming pool. Although it was 35 degrees, it was doable because there is always some wind. We really enjoyed our stay so we were surprised it was so quiet. The food was good and the staff was very nice and helpfull. We can recommand this location.
We spent an amazing week here with friends. The place is wonderful, just like the whole atmosphere. The rooms are very clean, the staff is really helpful and kind. The breakfasts and dinners were amazingly delicious. Can't wait to be there again! Nora and Nandi
The site is beautiful, in the countryside but not exceptional view . The rooms are quite large with old rugs on the floor that does not promise a perfect hygiene . The bathroom is poorly designed . Breakfast is okay. It s nice, but a bit expensive for average benefits ...
This is a very beautiful, quiet, romantic place which is convenient for exploring Ragusa, Modica and Noto. It would be a lovely place to have a wedding. We booked a superior room which was beautiful with jacuzzi bath, mini bar and hair dryer. The only thing that was missing was air conditioning. We arrived back to our room after eating out in Modica nd found the unit was not working. We opened the small windows above the door but it did not provide much relief from the heat. Luckily it wasn't too hot for Sicily but it was very muggy for us. We reported the lack of air conditioning next morning but we still had to spend the second night without it and they didn't offer to move us to another room. I think the lack of personal service spoilt our visit which is a shame because it was the most beautiful place and so much thought had gone into making it special. The building has been lovingly restored and is stunning. It was very quiet while we were there, not many guests. I feel it would have been better if there had been facilities for lunch and maybe use of a bar, but of course these things maybe available when it is busier, June is not high season.
