Sheraton Qingyuan Lion Lake Resort4.5 out of 5.0

We came up from Guangzhou especially to golf at the nearby Lion Lake golf course. First impression was it looked grand but inside it was dated and things seem to stand still. Seems like the hotel was styled in the Middle Eastern theme. When we tried to check-in no rooms were available for us thus we proceeded to the golf course for lunch and golf before returning later for the rooms. When we returned after the golf there were some confusion regarding room allocation and worse our luggage were still in the lobby but were promised to be delivered to our assigned room. Rooms were big but had no views. Comfy bed and good WiFi connection. We had dinner at Bene Italian restaurant and we were the only patrons that night. Food was good and portion was good for sharing. Breakfast at Feast had limited selection and thus was not very appetising. Overall, hotel needs to beef up its image and be more attentive to her clients.
This is the best hotel in Qingyuan, it's about 20km from city centre, if you don't drive, you have to stay at the hotel all day, but it's big enough to kill time, and the environment is beautiful. The facilities are very good and looks new though it's open for long time, overall, it's a nice stay here.
I've been to this beautiful property twice once as a couple and the other time with friends and both times were enjoyable. I have seen how popular it has become with Chinese locals over the years. Opt for rooms facing the lake and on higher floors so you can see the light and sound water show by the lake early evening. We enjoyed our day swimming by the pool. The food here too was overall delicious and caters to both western and chinese palate. There are options to go boating on the lake or book a barbecue on the boat which is quite popular so make sure you book as soon as you arrive or maybe disappointed. The place has a romantic and relaxing feel if you can escape the crowds and get here on a weekday or on a weekend at a slack time of the year, although the property has more than enough of space to give you the required privacy. The Arabic style architecture makes for a sweet escape and refreshing change from the typical oriental feel of most of the neighbouring hotels.
Here on business for 3 nights, Tues to Fri. Stayed in room 1715, which is long walk from the lobby check-in or even the elevators to the restaurants. The room has a musty smell. The lighting is either too much or too little, depending on which switches you select. The shower door leaks water out to the bathroom floor. The hair dryer plug does not stay in the outlet during use. One of the nights of my stay, I arrived back to my room when it was dark out, and I had to use my cell flashlight to light my way back to my room, bc the hallway lights were not on. I had a room with a balcony, and unfortunately they play loud music outside from somewhere - loud enough to hear in my room at night. Ate at the Italian restaurant one night with 3 other coworkers. The place is GIGANTIC. We were the only ones there, and our food took a very long time to arrive. Food was ok. The Feast restaurant (buffet restaurant) is just ok. Because it's an open air resort, the marble and tile walkways become very slippery from the humidity and rain. Overall, It's just a ridiculously massive property that at one time was probably amazing, but it's now just run down (lots of leaking ceilings - it rained a few times during my stay) and kinda creepy, due to the lack of visitors during my stay.
The hotel is situated in a fantastic lake, surronded by beautiful houses and gardens. The arabic arquitecture is remarkable and the rooms are outstading. Restaurants have a great variaty of food and drinks. There´s a beautiful gigant fountain show in the night. The ambiance is elegant but relaxing. Great place for events and meetings.
Stayed only a night as this was one of the stops on a tour that we joined which was a great pity as the place is massive and there is a lot to explore. Small gym that is well maintained compared to some of the other hotels we stayed at. There is a separate building housing the gym, swimming pool etc but we did not have the time to use it. Good that they had drinks available near check in area and a small area for you to sit. We had the buffet dinner and was treated to dancing and singing waiters, waitresses and chefs - they all looked like they enjoyed themselves and it was different from most restaurants that provide no entertainment at all. Oh yes and there was free flowing beer. Rooms are large but it is unfortunate that they chose a beige fabric so that if there is a stain, it is easily seen. Definitely this could be improved but in general the room was clean especially the bath. It was definite worthwhile stay for us.
The least you can't say is that this resort has no space to wander around. This is a huge hotel where everything is big: reception, hallways, bars, garden....Not too many people around however leaving a somewhat abanded impression. The brand new hotel manager promptly offered me a suite after a small defect in my room, complementaire fresh fruit on top. Thank you, Aaron, you'll make a great general manager. Excellent meeting facilities with great support from Ms Lishi always immediately responding to our requests. We had an excellent company workshop in Qingyuan thanks to the support of the friendly staff.
I celebrated Christmas Eve 2015 at this hotel and invited four family members to join. Being a LifeTime Platinum member with Starwood, I always get exceptionally good service at their properties, and this was no exception. The dinner performances were great, as was the large variety of foods.
I'm a very loyal Starwood member and normally have great confidence my stay will be wonderful when I book one of the many Starwood brands. Sheraton is definitely one of my first choices for business but also for leisure we have stayed in many Starwood properties with great satisfaction. This trip was a long weekend with my family (wife and 2 young kids). Unfortunatey it ended in us checking out one day early as we were really not having a good time. Main causes for this sub par experience I will list below; Positive: Chinese restaurant Yue was good in most respects and breakfast buffet was acceptable. Also I must note that some restaurant- and front desk staff really tried their best to deliver good service in line with the brand expectation, but without management this turned out to be a bridge too far. Room: - not clean, smell of mold and smoke - Carpets stained and smelly - Furniture stained and worn - Bathroom not clean (hair, stains, used shower cap on mirror) - Sheraton standard bath amenities missing - empty mini bar, also no glasses or anything in the cabinet Pool: - staff was rude in making us clear we had to buy head gear to go swimming, making it sound like we were barbarians for not carrying any with us. - pool staff did not understand or speak any English, even the word swimming was not part of vocabulary. - When entering pool area you were greeted with freezing shower that scared all children I witnessed to death. Very obvious problem that should be easy enough to fix. As people tried to avoid said shower some slipped and fell directly after. - When we arrived the hotel was quiet so pool was relatively clean, second day more people and the pool turned really dirty and smelly. - Changing room smelled like urine - Staff didn't take care of towels so we had to look for clean towels and try to not trip over dirty towels scattered on the changing room floor. General remarks; Property and grounds look like someones big investment on its way to go belly up. Huge medical center on site is abandoned and it starts to look like a ghost town, residential area is, for what I could see for at least 70% uninhabited and villas start to look delapitated from lack of maintenance. Hotel has not seen maintenance for a while either, especially guest rooms and pool areas. One of the 3 restaurants is closed (Bene Italian restaurant), pool bars are not staffed nor in operation. Cigar bar is closed. Overall you get the feeling that captain and first staff have left the ship long ago and the deck hands 3rd class are left to keep the place from sinking. At this point at best this is a local brand hotel but it should not carry the Sheraton name if no management is present to uphold that standard. In the end I still look forward to my next great experience with Starwood, as I'm sure it will be.
