Pension de la Plage3.0 out of 5.0

Room was clean. Very low key. A good spot to rest after a long flight and before going on to adventures. Quiet beach within walking distance. Breakfast was fresh fruits, baguettes, butter, jam, coffee or tea. Friendly, non-intrusive staff.
The Pension de la Plage is a lovely, homely family-run motel on the ring road. The owners and staff were really friendly and helpful, and spoke a moderate amount of English - although it helps if you at least try to speak some French as that’s the national language. Our kitchenette room had good cooking facilities (although no tea/coffee supplied), but the supermarket is only a short walk away and hot drinks are served as part of the lovely continental breakfast on offer each morning. Beds were comfortable and everything was clean and secure. Dogs and cats were friendly. The rooms at the front of the property are a little noisy as traffic heading into the city starts early. But there was no honking of horns or sirens. 🙂 Gardens are lush and well maintained, and the pool looked lovely. (I travelled for work and didn’t manage a dip!) The beach access is straight across the road. We had a really lovely stay and I would happily return to stay at this accommodation.
We enjoyed our time at Pension de la Plage. We live very simply while traveling. We loved the kitchenette and the quiet. We felt safe and the clean, eco-friendly accommodation was just what we needed. Bed was very comfortable, guidelines clear and owner waited up late for our arrival. Great proximity to beach, awesome WiFi (use WiFi while in airplane mode to avoid roaming charges). Dogs and cat were very friendly. Nice collection of library books and magazines-if you speak French. Almost no English spoken-fine with us. Located on main ring road with easy access to all the sights.
Basic amenities for the price and average service. No jug to boil water and no tea or coffee but other than that it was somewhere to sleep and shower. We arrived in the middle of a storm and had a day trip away so did not spend that much time there. Pool looked nice and if it was nicer weather would have gone for a swim. Right next to a Mobil station and we found somewhere to eat across the road.
We book this hotel after getting off a cruise ship and having to spend the entire day on Tahiti before our flight home. The owners and staff went out of the way to make us feel comfortable. The pool is refreshing and rooms are large. There is a restaurant that services the hotel directly on the ocean. The room have a/c. Due to no taxis available the night of my flight home, the owner went out of his way to take us to the airport.
This place is superb for those requiring simple, clean, friendly, relaxed accommodation. It is across the road from the best snorkeling on the island.. It has drinkable water, a delightful small swimming pool surrounded by palms and flowers, air conditioning and all facilities needed for a calm break in Tahiti. It is 5 minute walk from a shopping centre, with a decent supermarket, cafes, etc. 10 min taxi from the marina and 20 min from the airport. I simply cannot understand why anyone would pay 5 x as much to stay trapped in a resort when they could stay at somewhere like Pension de la Plage. Thank you to Vincent and his delightful family (plus dogs and rabbits!). I don't think we will ever return to Tahiti but we hope we can stay with you if we ever do!
Decent for budget travellers, I wouldn't want to stay on Tahiti for more than a couple of nights but if in town this is a good option if you want out of Papeete. Clean, serviceable and functional rooms. Down side is road noise but this is not really bad, but may bother light sleepers. Pool small but ok. It is not easy to get around on foot and the beach opposite is really not that good. We would have struggled without our hire car to go anywhere worth going. If you do have the chance check out the Blue Banana restaurant ten minutes away by car. Don't bother with the sunset roulottes near the mareva they are not good quality and there are better ones that spring up nearer. Really good super U supermarket within walking distance.
Spent three wonderful days here. Totally simple, with fridge, hot plate for cooking, if wanted. Start your day by walking north to the boulanger for excellent croissant and pan au chocolat. Then have the pension breakfast. There is loaner snorkel equipment, but we had our own. Walk across the street, through the public parking lot and there is the lagoon. The farther out you go, the better the fish and corals. Easily forty, fifty kinds of each. Great visibility. We would go right to the barrier reef, for hours, coming back all prunish and chilled!! Some of the finest snorkelling ever for us! Better than anything we've seen in the Caribbean! Don't miss the roast chicken roulotte at the traffic circle you passed on the way for croissants. A big chicken, roast potatoes and amazing gravy....1800 fpx. Closed Monday and Tuesday. We hitch hiked into Papeete one day, had to taxi back at 3200fpx after dark! No buses. Went for the pierside roulottes. Nothing outstanding and pricey when factoring in that taxi return. There are two other roulottes, crepes and pizza, by the pension, which we missed, as they were both closed on Tuesday!! Yes, the pension is on the road. So turn on the music on your phone. Very low...comfortable bed. There is a dehumidifier in the room which made for a very comfortable environment. Your hosts are a friendly, hard working French Polynesian family.
After about a 15 minute drive from the airport we arrived to this pension. Vincent, the owner, was waiting for our arrival on our evening flight. He was friendly and pleasant, and showed us to our room with a rundown of important information. Our kitchenette unit was furnished, clean and tidy. The garden courtyard with a pool was a definite plus. The breakfast was simple yet delicious - preserves, fresh bread, cheese, hardboiled eggs, juice, coffee and tea. The location of the pension was fantastic - out of our patio we had a view of the courtyard and out of the front door we could see the ocean over the wall. By crossing the sometimes quite busy street and a parking lot we accessed a public beach. There was a market within a 5 minute walk. The fried chicken roulette we tried for lunch one day was even closer. If you are looking for a one-night stay in between flights I am sure there are closer places than this. However if you are saying for a few nights I would absolutely recommend Pension de la Plage.
I agree with other reviewers that the rooms are very basic, with the only amenity being super rough towels, but if you have clear expectations, then it's not a problem. Bed was comfy but bring earplugs as this pension is on a busy street. The location is great (you can hop a bus to Papeete right next door), with an awesome public beach right across the street! The roulottes across the street are so convenient and budget-friendly compared to everything else in FP. The staff are super friendly and helpful and since our room didn't have AC, we took advantage of the lovely pool :). We also enjoyed the simple breakfast: fresh baguette, jam, cheese, fruit, hard boiled eggs, coffee and fruit juice. Perfect for us! We even enjoyed a few games of cards on our little patio. If I ever need an affordable, no frills place to stay in Tahiti, I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.
