Golden Well Hotel5.0 out of 5.0

The Golden Well is a lovely hotel just enough off the beaten path to avoid the craziness and throngs of tourists in Prague. Beautiful, well appointed rooms. Outstanding service by the hotel staff, particularly the front desk. The hotel is a bit formal/old fashioned, which is not for everyone. My only complaint is that I didn't have the flexibility to order a small breakfast a la carte -- the only option was an expensive buffet. Overall, a delightful stay.
We were guests at the Golden Well for 5 nights in June. Since the road leading to the hotel is in a restricted area, our driver parked down the road and we walked up the drive leading to the hotel. The hotel is in a very quiet and peaceful area. We were checked in by Stanislas and given a nice tour of the hotel (including the rooftop restaurant and social room, where wine and hors d'oeurvres are served later in the afternoons). Our room on the second floor(#25 John Dee Room) was tastefully appointed and contained some beautiful artwork. It also had several windows, with lovely views, that we could open for fresh air. The bathroom, while large enough, was a little dark (ended up using the mirror in the bedroom to get ready) and the tub/shower combination was a bit of a high step to get into. Though this was not a problem for us, it would be for someone with mobility issues. The bed was very comfortable, though it was missing a top sheet. We were going to request one but kept forgetting, and eventually we just got used to it. I thought I had read somewhere that Golden Well guests had a private entrance up to the Royal Castle itself, but I guess that is not the case any longer. Stanislaus did provide us with complimentary tickets to the portion of the Royal Gardens the hotel overlooks (though I'm sorry to say we never found the time to use them). Wine, fruit and a beautiful chocolate cake, were waiting for us in our room with a nice note to celebrate our anniversary. In fact, each evening, we were left a sweet treat in a glass-domed dish on our nightstands. Nice touch. The location of the hotel at the base of the Castle was perfect. We walked everywhere (we averaged 7+miles a day...offset by the amount of food we ate:). Note: Wear comfortable shoes as you will most often be walking on cobblestone streets. We visited the Royal Castle the first day. Though I wasn't bowled over by the small number of rooms you can tour at the castle, St. Vitus Cathedral and the other buildings are worth the admission. Though it's a separate entrance fee, we thought Lobkowicz Palace (at the end of the Golden Lane) was a much more intimate slice of one royal family's heritage and such a nice break from the crowds. There's also a really nice outdoor cafe at Lobkowicz where you can have lunch afterwards. The hotel is also just a 5 minute walk from the Church of St. Nicholas, whose side-street is lined with cafes. Our favorite was Malostansky Hostinec (great outdoor seating area, fresh Norwegian salmon, and superb apple strudel). We went to a concert one evening in St. Nicholas. However the small portable organ wasn't powerful enough for a wow-me concert. I would recommend the chamber concert (Vivaldi 4 Seasons) we saw at the Klementinum in the Mirror Chapel instead. The beautiful organ was much more impressive (and was apparently played by Mozart back in the day). Other sights worth a visit are, of course, Charles Bridge, the Jewish Synagogues and old cemetery, & Old Town Square just to name a few. We also did a very worthwhile day trip to Cesky Krumlov, which was delightful. (We booked through Personal Prague Guide). We attended a portion of the hotel's complimentary wine reception several days. This was a nice break after sight-seeing all day. There were different offerings each day (small sandwiches, spring rolls, something sweet to name a few). For the most part, it was kept refreshed. One day there weren't any glasses left and wine was running low, though this was rectified quickly after notifying the staff. We contemplated making reservations for dinner at the hotel, mainly because of the scenic view, but just ran out of time. We were also offered breakfast at a "discounted" 20 Euros per person/per day during our stay. But my general philosophy is that I'm probably only going to eat breakfast at the hotel if it's included, or if it's more reasonably priced. To be honest, my husband just went to either the Starbucks at the far end of St. Nicholas or the McDonalds a little further down the road for our breakfast. Breakfast is not where I want to spend my money, but that's just me. Overall, we had a great experience at the Golden Well and would love to stay here again one day!
First of all – the breakfast (20 Euro pp if for the entire stay or 36 pp Euro If not) - is it worth the outrageous price? Nope, it isn't. The hot breakfast a la carte is a bit embarrassing – everything arrived slightly cold, the scrambled eggs felt like they went through a food processor and the omelet came out burnt more than once, the sausages and roasted potatoes were tv-dinner kind of awful and the bacon lost its crispiness long before it reached the table. And finally – If you are in a hurry, forget about it -- it takes at least 30 minutes to get what you ordered. There are some pros - the cold buffet (same every day) is really high-quality and delicious, and there is a wide variety of special drinks. There are a lot of gluten-free options (though their gluten-free bread is really bad), and of course –it's comfortable, the view is amazing and the service of the waitresses was great. If you really really insist, the best choice is the Scottish Salmon dish with an addition of poached egg and the French Toast (didn’t' try the other sweet options because they couldn't be gluten-free, but perhaps they are good too). You can order as many dishes you want from the menu and it's included in the price. Bottom line – save the money you'd spend on this breakfast and invest on the fanatic dinner they serve here instead. Book your dinner reservation a lot in advanced – they get fully booked fast. Great tip: I discovered that you can get complementary pastries and coffee/tea to your room every day from 7 AM – this would be the best option I think (not relevant for us because gluten..) The hotel: I can't decide if the location is good – it is beautiful and near the castle gardens (though to get to the actual castle you have to hike a long way up) and good for exploring the lesser quarter, but since the Tram system is so great, it really doesn't matter where you are in the city. It's about 5 minutes walk to the tram station (lines 22 and 15 got us everywhere) and about 10 to the closest Metro (we hardly used it though). The hotel is uphill, but that really didn't bother us much – we hardly felt it. Although I really enjoyed the lesser quarter more (far less busy), it is a little far from the best restaurants and some of the main attractions – It's about 22 minutes walk to the center, so we got Uber a few times to make it on time (though in retrospect it took just as long). If you know yourselves to be last-minute kind of people, the location is a bit remote. Pros: Perfectly quiet, romantic, classy and intimate. We felt like we were the only guests. Great, kind staff, very quick response time and very helpful. We had a lot of special requests and they were all taken care of. Snacks and drinks in the lobby between 16:00 – 18:00 Efficient elevator Cons: No spa. Breakfast not included. The room: The pros- Large room, enough storage space. Immaculately clean – like it was built yesterday. Great shower – both rain shower and hand-held. Molten Brown soaps, shampoo and hair conditioner – a real treat. Hair dryer. Plenty towels. Super comfortable soft bed with a wide selection of bedding and pillows (we had hypoallergenic 100% cotton – very helpful!) Tv with a very large selection of DVDs, apple TV, ipod docking station with nice jazz music playing on it, water bottles each night, robes, slippers and a turn down service with small treats each night (we had gluten-free by request). Ironing facilities on demand. Nespresso machine in room with restocked capsules. Fruit plate restocked with delicious fruit every day Free in-room Wifi works great Airconditiong works great. The cons- We had room 31 which is a kind of attic room with sloping ceilings and we hit our heads a few times. It had a kind of a small vestibule where we kept our luggage, but there was a pillar in the middle of it which made it hard getting around. I'd ask for a different room next time. We had a window view to the gardens, but the city view is actually nicer – it didn't matter anyway since the window was very small and in the corner. The bathtub (with shower) was really high – I'm 1.71 CM and I was really wary of getting in and out of it – we asked for a stool but it was not help. Caution required. No tea-making facilities in room, only in the lobby. We always drink herbal tea before bed, so that was a miss… Bottom line – I'd recommend this hotel, it's very classy and we enjoyed it a lot, but it would have been bwttwe without the expensive breakfast option and perhaps not in room 31, which is a bit problematic.
From the beginning till the end. Absolutely amazing receptionist, warm and welcoming CHI with welcome drink. I can recommend a dinner at the restaurant, view for a night Prague will take your breath out. Dinner was excellent and stuff very polite and nice. BUT the best of all were the breakfasts (one of the most important thing in the hotels, do not you think?). Room was perfectly clean and beautiful, no dust anywhere (nor on the chandelier!!), no water drops in the bathroom, simply perfect. It was not our first visit and we will definitely come back soon. Thank you for accomplished service, especially to receptionist, he made a very good first impression so we knew that we will feel comfortable and "important" even if we are not regular guest, dressed in plain clothes, without hundreds of luggage...
Our superior room was decorated with period furniture and view over the Italian terraced Castle gardens. I found it difficult to just leave the room. The amenities of this Hotel leave nothing out from beautifully appointed vanity items in the bathroom to the turn down service of the bed at night with a delicious little slice of heaven to eat. Enjoy a fabulous breakfast and treat yourself to a dinner high on the Terrace overlooking Prague. The location is perfect close enough to the Charles Bridge and Old Town yet a little distanced from those very busy areas. None of this can be achieved without the wonderful staff at this Hotel that were so helpful and friendly. Prague and the Golden Well Hotel will be what memories are made of. Thank you.
A little expensive but the views and service made it a magical dinner. They have two levels of outdoor rooftop dining with panoramic city views. The service was terrific. Oh, and the steak I had was outstanding!
I was completely thrown by the sheer number of tourists in Prague in June. It was great to explore the city, but it would have been overwhelming without the quiet oasis of the Golden Well to come back to!! Service was six star, everyone was incredibly friendly, and every need or want anticipated and catered for. View from breakfast and rooftop terrace restaurant over the rooftops of Lesser Town towards the Charles Bridge were phenomenal. Location was fantastic - 7 min walk to the Castle, easy walk to the Old Town, lots of dining options within reach. A bit on the expensive side (as you might expect) but totally worth it.
Prague is a fantastic city that certainly lives up to the hype. If Prague is the crown of the Czech Republic, then the Gold Well Hotel is most certainly the largest jewel in that crown. I have never felt more loved away from home than for the four wondrous nights that I spent there. We walked into our room to the sound of an Italian opera playing on the iPod, and a bottle of red wine, a plate of fruit and an assortment of cheeses were waiting to make us feel comfortable. Every night there was a small sweet delectable by our bedsides that was like a soft, sweet confectionary kiss good night. The staff was always friendly and ready to assist in any way without being like an overbearing mother smothering you when you were home from Spring Break. The food at the hotel's restaurant was out of this world, both for breakfast and for dinner. It was not possible to find something not to your liking. If you are lucky enough to travel to Prague you absolutely HAVE TO stay at this hotel. To stay someplace else would deny you of having the best travel experience of your life.
We choose a room with a view, when we stepped into the room it took our breath away. It was so beautiful! It starts with the smile when we got to this small hotel, with the welcome of the team. The wonderful breakfast looking over the city, the nice people around that look for making us feel good and happy. Every night a small goodnight surprise. It is a magical place, with beautiful view and team that i wish i could work with in my job, so nice. It made our stay un forgettable. We know we will come again!
stayed for two days, the staff was professional, and friendly. the room is absolutley amazing with perfect views hope i came back. all good for you. only one thing i had to say is wifi it works but sometimes just go off.. but it's peace of cake
