Golden Tulip Porto Gaia Hotel & Spa4.0 out of 5.0

We stayed here for a week from 8th March. We had a room on the 4th floor with stunning sea views. Our room was refurbished with a fully tiled bathroom and lovely walk in shower, the room was large, with a huge comfortable bed. The location is perfect for long walks along the coast to the left of the hotel and the Douro river to the right. There are plenty of bars and restaurants in both directions, we enjoyed fresh fish at a Portuguese restaurant on the Douro river called Pedra Furada Tasca Tavern. We used the spa which is in need of a refurb but was lovely to have a swim, sauna, and jacuzzi after lots of walking. The hotel is undergoing a refurbishment and there is noise at times. We enjoyed our stay and would definitely return.
Just home from an amazing 3night stay. Room was lovely and the view stunning. All the staff were friendly, attentive and couldnt do enough for us. The area is great as you get the best of both worlds, sea views and an easy 20min bus ride (no. 11 was best) into the main attractions. Cant recommend enough, we are already planning our next visit!
Had a fantastic stay at the Golden Tulip Hotel with an ocean view from the room. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Excellent links to Porto (Trindade) via Cais de Gaia on number 11 bus - approx 20 mins. Didn't have a chance to check out the spa/pool facilities as there were too many things to do/see in Gaia and Porto! Maybe next time!
First impressions count, and when arriving at The Golden Tulip the frontage is quite disappointing! There is a lot of algae on the mosaic in front of the entrance & the planters and decorative walls are in desperate need of some attention!! The reception area whilst old is welcoming, and staff are extremely pleasant & helpful. The bedroom was really nice, with a view of the ocean from a large balcony, large comfortable (twin) beds, a nice large wardrobe & seperate toilet & bathroom with a bath + shower. Food is always important, with the breakfast dining room a tad 'soul-less' (no restaurant service acyually in the hotel), however, the self-serve buffet is nice apart from the 'hot' food always seeming to be 'just warm' The restaurant is detached and called ,The Restaurant Branco'. AVOID!, food is poor & overpriced with 'stiff', waiting staff!!!!
This is not the best hotel in town but the rooms are more or less ok. We had luck to get a room with sea view. Air Condition didn't work. Breakfast is average (every day the same). The pool area is not 100% clean and the steam bath isn't working in the men area. The sauna worked at least in the men area but not in the women (according to my wife). I don't think that I will come here again.
the staff in the hotel is great and the location is good, close to the sea. we head a double room with a third bed in the third floor. i'm sure that this hotel has been looking great in the past. the breakfast is ok, the rooms not dirty and more or less ok. the spa area is ok but a little bit dirty. sauna is working at the men area but steaming bath not at all. i have seen plenty of better but also lots of worser hotels
My room 407, only has a window no balcony, but its at 5ft from floor, (1.5m) so cant really stand to watch nothing at all. Breakfast, really disappointed for a 4*, its a really basic breakfast ( same as 2* hotels) and the A/C works.. but no cold at all. Even when complained said its "working"... but them majority of the people in hotel had their windows open, so had to do same to get my room cooler!! And for the Spa area only opens from 10 to 20, which if you go in business cant access at all. Some employee bot in front desk and Breakfast not even said a "hello"... Floor still in carpet and should be replace, its very clear the marks of years! Locations is close to water front, and have net in rooms to work. Car Parks in street/parks really closed but still limit and some street parks. Other options is their park/garage but its Payed!
We enjoyed the location of this hotel, out from the city after our travels around Spain & Portugal this was a welcome respite with lovely ocean views from the enclosed balcony from our room. Our room was spacious, clean with a small fridge which you do not often get in European hotel rooms. The bed was comfortable and the furniture suited the décor and age of the hotel. The reception staff were helpful with advising us on catching the local bus into Porto and riverfront area where the port wine shops and many restaurants are located. The bus ride is interesting through the residential area into Porto. We purchased a multi-day ticket and by day 2 we were new friends with the bus driver. We had our own hire car and there is free hotel parking across the road from the hotel. We had dinner one night at the Onda Mar Restaurant around the corner from the hotel, it was good, but beware, the owner brings “add ons” such as port, cheese, bread etc that he put on the table, we paid more for these than for the food we ordered. We also used the laundry near this restaurant for 2 lots of washing and found them very good and reasonably priced. We would highly recommend this Golden Tulip for a pleasant sea side stay with easy access to the Duoro River and central Porto.
This hotel has lovely staff and it's in a great location if you want something on the beach and within decent proximity to Porto however, if you are planning on staying for a few days, ask for a room that isn't close to the elevator. We are staying here for two weeks and I suppose because it's an older hotel, the elevator (which is behind the wall of our bed) sounds like large machinery being revved loudly EVERY time someone uses it. It has actually ruined our trip because we can't sleep and found ourselves cancelling day trips so we could catch some sleep while most guests were out of the hotel. We complained on the very first night and asked to be moved as soon as another room became available but nothing was done, even though we saw oodles of people checking in and out. Not that I would wish our room on anyone but you'd think people who invested TWO weeks of their stay would get preference over others only staying for a day or two. Very disappointed to have spent almost $7000 on a trip we couldn't appreciate because the noise left us constantly exhausted. :( But, I'm sure if you got a room AWAY from the elevator, this would be a nice little place to hang your hat. (Hoping our day trip tomorrow isn't ruined by the lack of sleep yet again this evening but I am indeed writing this instead of sleeping :/)
At one time this hotel probably was a five-star venue. Today the improvements needed to the facilities are long overdue. The staff and the service is excellent and reflective of a high-end hotel. The location is across the street from the beaches. The beaches have a lot of heavy surf, hard pebbly sand and very windy conditions. The restaurant in front of the hotel, Casa, is truly an excellent venue with great food and service.
