Out stay at The Shells Resort did not get off to a good start. We spent a long time researching where to stay on Phu Quoc and as anyone travelling with a family will know there are few options on Phu Quoc for family rooms and so we decided on The Shells because they had beach view rooms available which had a sofa bed which our daughter could use. We booked a room specifically because it said it had one king bed and a sofa bed. We checked the small print which said “maximum 1 child under 6 years old stays free if using existing bed”. We also checked the Agoda website which said “Children 6-11 years old will be charged VND 780,000 per child per night with extra bed or sofa bed included (dependent on room type)”. Now, to my mind, a sofa bed in the room is an “existing bed” in the same way that double bed in the room is an “existing bed” and as our daughter is 5 the additional charges should not apply. But not according to The Shells who then tried to charge us extra for our daughter to sleep on the sofa bed, which is built in and already part of the structure of the room. As we had made a non-cancellable, non-refundable booking we were pretty unhappy about this. Complaints to Agoda didn’t make any difference either. It was only by painstakingly and steadfastly referring the hotel to its own terms and conditions and sticking to our guns that the hotel eventually backed down. Needless to say, by the time we arrived, in January 2019 we were not filled with optimism for our stay. So, what was good. Well I have to give it to the staff (excluding the reservation clerk), who were unfailingly friendly and helpful. But that’s about it. And what was not so good. Breakfast was a shambles. You have to get there early (by 8.30am), or risk not getting a table or any food. The hotel beach is cleaned but the water is full of trash and seaweed. We took one look and then spent the rest of our week on other beaches. The hotel is some distance from restaurants and places to visit. This was ok with us as we wanted somewhere quieter but you need to be aware that you will be taking taxis (which are cheap) everywhere. The building is showing signs of ageing. It’s made of a steel and concrete and there are signs of decay and rust, which is not particularly pleasant to see. But the worst thing was the ants. We had a colony of ants living in the kitchen area of our room. They would come out on to the surface whenever we weren’t around and then disappear when we were present. They were small and light brown (and of a kind that you do not find in Europe) and as they seems to stay in the kitchen area which was far from our clothes and belongings we weren’t too concerned. That is until we found they had taken up residence in one of our travel bags, which we then washed thoroughly to get rid of them all but And then we got home. And came down to breakfast a few days later and found the kitchen worktop covered in small light brown ants, the same as those from the hotel. And they are still with us, three months after we came back from The Shells. They disappear when you’re not around and come out when you are away. So, thank you, The Shells. While I was hoping the memory of our stay would fad with time, each morning when I come down for breakfast, I am reminded of our holiday by the presence of our small little brown ants.
We spent a relaxing and unforgettable 5D4N for our Phu Quoc trip. Spacious room with greenery environment surrounding our villa. Strategy location to view the beautiful sunset from the infinity swimming pool. Varity breakfast buffet and the in house ala carte menu are delicious too. There are live band musician and singer for the dinner section at the beach front restaurant and provided free flow mocktail & red wine from 7pm-8pm daily. Just drink as much as you can! Friendly staff with fluent English speaking. They located us at the villa which is nearby restaurant as we travel along with baby and surprising us with the complimentary birthday cake for our little one! They are so loving and caring. Heartwarming and appreciated for their special arrangement. Free buggy service from your villa to reception/restaurant. Located at the hidden gem nearby Ong Lang beach which is 10 minutes drive via motorbike renting from hotel (VDN150,000 for 4 hours) or by private taxi. Highly recommend The Shells Resort & Spa to those who are looking for a serene and good atmosphere 4 star hotel at Phu Quoc!!!
We went to this amazing hotel to relax and enjoy The Good life. The staff was very Nice and helpfull. The rooms was very Nice and with a lot of space. We booked The suite and was not disappointed. The only Reading this hotel dont get top marks, is The restaurant which is a little expensive and The quality do not match The Price.
Stayed in March, family with a kid. Beautiful well maintained territory with private space for every villa. Excellent breakfast with great fruits selection. Sea is unfortunately polluted with garbage so be prepared to spend more time in pools which are excellent in design and quality. Restaurant is absolutely overpriced and you have no chance to eat elsewhere. Do not recommend leaving hotel because unfortunately like most of Vietnam there is garbage and poor leaving standard everywhere on the island. Night market is a tourist trap, overpriced and noisy. Got stomach problem after the visit so never come back. I will come back to the hotel just to experience again quiteness of villa with pool next to it for few nights. Make sure you buy water before arrival because it is complete rip off at the hotel (2$ for 0.5l)
Great location a private beach and away of The Rumble of the City. Great rooms and superb staff. Valtavat ja upeat huoneet palvelu täysin moitteetonta. Rauhallista hiekkarantaa edessä ja hieno allasalue. Täyden kympin paikka suosittelen
Ok so the boyfriend and I came with another couple. And all I can say is that you really will like this place depending on what you're looking for. Here's my experience. Arrival: We arranged an airport transfer with the resort and it all went well. The airport is only 15 minutes away from the resort and there was someone waiting for us upon arrival. If there are others who have booked the resort and are in the same flight as you, they will wait until everyone has arrived before departing. Check in: The check-in process was entirely painless and fuss free. Just look for your name in the guest list, hand over your passport (they will hold it) and show them proof of your payment (either via the card you paid with or the app your booked with or even an SMS from the bank about your transaction) the receptionist is very helpful and we even gad a buggy send us to our villas along with our luggage. The room: As you can see, the room itself is very spacious (can be as cold as you want it to be!) and also nicely designed. We stayed in the Garden Villas and we found it to be very comfortable. The room however, was a little dusty and my dust allergies made my first day a little uncomfortable. Also, there was dirt/dust below the rest bench thing in front of the bed. So when we moved it, we ended up stepping on dust dirt as well. There are some ants around but that's expected of anything near a garden or nature in general. Also, the hot water for the bath tub doesn't get hot. Just warm and it doesn't last long. Our refrigerator also was not very cold so it tool quite some time for our desserts and drinks to cool down. Also, there seemed to be a burning smell outside our garden on 7th and 8th March 2019. The restaurant: Every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, the resort has a seafood buffet for 750,000 VND (not inclusive of 10% service charge and 5% tax). The seafood was very fresh and so was the beef. Others were so-so. The breakfast spread was not bad. Loved the noodles, omelette and yogurt. The location: If you're looking for some peace and quiet, somewhere away from the crowd. This is the place for you! The resort is far from the touristy spots and approximately will cost you 100,000 VND to get to the Phu Quoc night market per way. This can be good or bad as it means it's a little ways from main attractions and you'll need to take taxis to travel. But you get peace and quiet. The beach: The waters aren't terribly clear nor are they turqoise. You definitely can find better beaches elsewhere. But the beach sands are clean. You also get a lovely sunset view from the beach with live bands in the evening. Staff: Super helpful and efficient! Buggies arrived in less than 5 minutes after calling and the manager recommended us a nice pho place to have lunch at when the one we intended to visit was closed. However, while they are nice, they are strictly no nonsense as well. So while they do their best to accommodate you and help you, any unreasonable requests won't be entertained, nor will they tolerate it if you are being rude to them. Overall: Overall me and the boyfriend loved this place! It really depends on how picky you want to be. No resort is perfect and this place can be improved on as well. But looking back at our trip, we really don't think any of the things we mentioned were enough to ruin our stay there!
Had a amazing 4 nights with my girlfriend, Seaview room was amazing and beautiful, breakfast was fantastic and lots of variety, beach was clean and pool was very nice, staff was lovely and friendly, check-in and check out was speedy, had no problem with getting taxi organised. Beautiful resort.
I had a splendid time with my newly married wife. Resort is superb. Took the pool view villa and the privacy is very much guaranteed. You will have your own sweet time at the less congested beach and pool. Definitely will come again.
Aside from it’s polluted beach, the facilities are actually very nice. Sadly, it is not managed to serve those who speak English. The front desk staff (at a remote location speak English but the rest seem to be trained to avoid English. I got looks of utter confusion in response to even a simple “Hello”. Any question had to be referred to a manager. The lack of English ultimately is not too surprising because the vast majority of guests communicate only in Chinese. It seems management is geared to serve its primary clientele. Even beyond the language gap, there is an air of regimentation. They follow their program whether or not the guests like it. Example: The breakfast buffet is open until 10, but food is not restocked after 9. They give you a dirty look if you ask for a piece of fruit after trays are empty. In fact, they start resetting tables for lunch around 9 and yell at you if you sit at a reset table. It’s shockingly poor service. Another example: There’s a beach bar, but no one comes around asking for orders. Yet, when you walk to the bar and order a drink, they tell you to go back to your seat and wait until they deliver the order. Why not ask for orders on the way back to the bar. I don’t hold staff responsible. Most are friendly and want to help. It’s pretty clearly the fault of management. We stayed at many hotels during our 2 weeks in Vietnam. Every other place was super friendly and helpful. The Shells Resort is different. Two more notes: The water at the beach has even more trash than I’ve seen elsewhere. There are fishing vessels docked right off shore. That may add to the garbage. Freakiest piece of flotsam was a dead duck tumbling in the surf. They insist on holding your passports at check-in. As others have commented, it gives them extra leverage in case of a billing dispute at checkout. In our case, they sternly informed us that a hand towel was missing. They dropped the issue after we laughed at the absurdity and offered to let them search our luggage. Ultimately my wife and I decided to put aside our shock and just enjoy our room, the pool, lawn, and beach. and the lawn. It is a very nice place. Just don’t expect the service you would from any decent resort.
My son and partner really enjoyed their time at this resort. Rooms were very large! It gave my son a lot of space to play and run around. Facilities were very good! And the staff were extremely nice and helpful. Everything was clean and beautifully decorated - with all the trees and plants around, I would have thought there would be more mosquitoes but neither myself nor my family were bitten once. Villa pool, main pool and the beach, were spectacular. It was clean, no rubbish on the beach. It was one of my concerns reading other reviews but I didn’t experience any issues. My only downside was the food at the restaurant wasn’t the greatest, particularly when the price was quite high. Saying this, I’m not the biggest fan of resort food anyway, so this is more of a personal preference. The breakfast buffet had a huge selection. All in all, great experience. Thank you Shells!
