Khao Lak Riverside Resort & Spa4.0 out of 5.0

Our last trip to the southern part of Thailand we stayed at Riverside Resort & Spa, nice enough hotel. The room was clean & spacious with a unique bathroom with a view. The wifi was good but it only had limited tv channels. Staff was helpful & friendly, and the breakfast was delicious. Seems like all was ok, except we were the only guests there! The lobby/reception area was locked after 8pm I think, so we had to take the stairs to go to our room in the 3rd floor. Most time the elevator was switched off & not working (maybe to save the electricity). The staff had double roles: receptionist by day & cook by morning (we only met/interacted with 1 staff during our 3 nites there) Maybe it's quiet becoz there's construction going on right next door, we missed the entrance when we first arrived. We mistakenly took it as the entrance to the builders' barrack. Ah well .... nothing wrong with the hotel unless you let your imagination going wild then it would feel like being in the film Vacancy .... 😅😅😅
The riverside has a charm that chain hotels just cant provide. Rent a bicycle and the location becomes great. The rooms are big and nice and the staff are friendly and happy people. I have enjoyed my 5 nights and was positively surprised after reading thru the reviews. Breakfast was the only meal i have eaten there and loved it. The good coffee is especially worth mentioning.
I would say that the location is not perfect. It’s about 20 min walk to the shopping and dining area. It’s not close to the beach. However the hotel area is very nice, calm. There is a pool, more suited for adults, than children. The rooms were big, clean and in every way comfortable. You sleep great in the huge beds. The best with this hotel was the staff, friendly, helpful.
Large and noisy construction site right next to the hotel. The construction will be going on for the next 1-2 years. The beds are horribles, hard like stones. Only good things to say about the hotel is the breakfast.
When I first reviewed Riverside 4 years ago, I said that it was a hidden gem. Well, I am genuinely sad to say that the gem has lost its sparkle. First of all though the positives: The Riverside is in a fantastic location being 2 minutes from the beach and 5 minutes from the myriad of shops and restaurants. The staff, especially the manager Peter, are warm and welcoming and do their very best to make your stay the best they can. Breakfast is cooked to order It is a relatively small hotel so you never feel crowded. Now, alas, for the negatives: The resort is very tired looking. When we first visited the gardens were pristine. Now, the grass is only kept short in the immediate vicinity of the swimming pool and the small hedges which line the paths are becoming overgrown. The trees also need pruning. It does not give a good impression. The linen, when you get a full complement, is threadbare and stained. Please don't misunderstand, it is fresh from the laundry however it is so old that washing is no longer removing some of the stains. The beach towels in particular are an embarrassment. Cream is not a good colour for beach towels. The seat of the chairs at breakfast are stained and in some places are so worn that the stuffing is showing through. There is a new resort being constructed on the land bordering the Riverside. To summarise: What could be a fabulous resort again needs an injection of cash by its owners or future owners to replace worn out linen and furniture, undertake routine maintenance and to employ a gardener to bring the grounds back up to scratch.
Have just spent two weeks in what felt like a beautiful Thai home. When we left, it was like we were leaving family. The service was absolutely the highlight of our stay - yet careful and fun. This is as far from the chain hotel experience as you can get. Our room had all the hallmarks of exceptional Swiss design while being unmistakably contemporary Thai. It was very spacious and light with lots of full length windows which gave wonderful views of the surrounding countryside, mountains, river and beach. Husband spent long hours in the bath with an exceptional view of all this or on the large terrace bird-watching.The location of this small family owned hotel is perfect as it is in a quiet pocket set slightly back from the beach yet a short walk to shops etc. Air conditioning was excellent, pool well-maintained and the lift was a real bonus. No downsides although garden needs more care. Planning our next visit asap,
This was our 3rd visit and as good as ever. The Riverside is privately owned and the service is brilliant. A la Carte breakfast on the terrace, great rooms and spotlessly clean. The hotel cannot compete with the huge marketing budgets of larger, chain hotel groups. However if you appreciate personal service and your business being genuinely appreciated then this is a great choice. Support this hotel and you will not be disappointed.
This wonderful hotel is everything one could ask for is a seaside holiday resort. Every room has beautiful views of the ocean, the river alongside the hotel and overlooks the pool and lush green gardens. The rooms and ensuites are spacious, spotless, modern and tastefully furnished. A 2min wall through the garden and you are on the beach with plenty of beach cafes nearby. Peter the assistant manager was fantastic, very attentive and has a very good knowledge of this part of Thailand. His English is excellent. JA a part owner and her staff where extremely friendly and ver helpfulcould. Breakfast was outstanding.
Stayed their for the second time last month and thoroughly enjoyed it. This place might be not for travellers who only look for standardized 4- and 5-star Sheraton/Hilton etc properties. Whilst I regularly stay at places like the Sheratons or the Mandarin and enjoy the high-quality there, what pulls me back to the Riverside & Spa is exactly that it isn´t yet another SPG etc property but a place you feel like coming home or staying with friends. The team around Ja is amazing and will do their utmost to make you feel at home and for you to have a great time. The rooms are also nice, the view over the garden towards the sea is great and so is the food. Also, contrary to a previous poster, we loved our bed, ... sooooo comfy! So, everyone´s different! :-) I will have the pleasure of going back to Khao Lak and giving my review above I can guess where I will spend that week. Of course, the Riverside R&S. Thanks to Ja, Peter and the team for last month´s most enjoyable stay (and the nice birthday surprise!, too).
I want to emphasize that the staff was incredibly nice and tried their hardest to fix the issues that came up. Overall: very nice staff but quite outdated facilities. The shower did not initially work, then produced rust colored water. The bed was so hard that we ultimately left and paid for a hotel down the road -- one that was about the same price but far nicer. The pictures here are a bit deceiving -- I'm sure it was a nice place 15 years ago but it currently looks like a ghost town and is a truly aging building and grounds.
