This hotel was clean, quiet (room 204), with friendly personnel. Check-in was a bit slow, possibly because the desk person was a trainee. The "horrible" produce market across the road was quiet, and its presence marked by a few cabbage leaves and a tomato or two on the sidewalk. Breakfast was adequate, with the puzzling exception of the "juices," which were dilute synthetic-tasting solutions. Sicily produces masses of citrus; real orange juice cannot be expensive. Good value for the money.
My husband and I stayed at this hotel for 3 nights as part of a package we booked. We booked a double room, and whilst it wasn't luxurious it certainly wasn't the worst! Having read some of the reviews on here beforehand I was worried about staying here however we didn't experience any of the negative aspects described by others. The staff were very polite and helpful when needed. The breakfast was adequate, plenty of pastries and freshly made breads which were delicious. Scrambled/boiled eggs were available if required. Ask for fresh coffee/capuccino from the waiters and they will always oblige. It is true that the surrounding area is not fantastic, we took the bus 107 outside the hotel downtown every day, so didn't spend much time in that area. Perhaps the fact that it was January and the hotel was not full made it a better experience but we found it to be a very acceptable hotel for a very reasonable price.
My husband and I booked this hotel based on the description and photos we saw online. We booked a superior room rather than a standard even though the standard oddly enough had the same inclusions. The pictures on the website however did show a warm an welcoming image for the superior showing wall art and room furniture which included a small sofa. We arrived late in the evening and that night we decided to extend our stay in Palermo an extra night Sonia went back online and booked another night this time choosing a standard room as we thought there must have been an error but given we had settled in we would keep the room. We did this online to use loyalty points that could only be redeemed this way. In the morning we went to reception to confirmmthevextended stay and to address what we thought must have been a mistake. After some discussion (a most an hour) the conclusion was that the inclusions were indeed the same in both categories and that photos cannot be relied upon. To avoid getting into a heated debate and waste more of our very little time in Palermo, we agreed to pay the difference and stay in the so called superior room. We said we needed to leave at that point but again confirmed we would pay the extra. After a long day of sightseeing and shopping we returned to the hotel to find our key card did not work. My husband went reception and was told we need to pay 35 Euro before we would be let into the room which had all our belongings and I should add they also had our card details as security so this really seemed wrong! Got into the room to find it had not been made up as it should have been, The bathroom had no robes as described, the towel warmer did not work (good for drying personal handwashing) and now no clean towels! Not standard certainly not superior but definitely inferior! On a positive note, breakfast buffet was of a good standard and some of the staff are lovely (but watch those nasty ones!) I would not go back again based on the way we were treated. The situation could have been handled much better.
We arrived in the Hotel a few minutes after 10pm after a 23 hour boat trip to be given a rather tired room. We were then told there was no chance of food the kitchen was closed, the bar didn't sell food and even through there is a room service menu, no food would be provided. They also have a poorly stocked bar. Altogether not a great place to be. If I had booked more than one night I would have moved to another Hotel. The one slight saving grace was the friendly bar man.
The restaurant is not awful, it is a disaster: you need to sit in a circle table with other guests and it is not clean at all... The room: the A/C does not work in the majority of rooms; ours was replaced 4 times and the A/C in the last room did not work properly either... The parking is nice
The service is unbelivebly poor! Rooms are stucked at 80s and in poor condition, only italian tv chanles. As per the food-breakfast, there are two halls, out of which is one in the basement, where the remains of the foodstaff is served; the used plates, cups and culteries are sitting on the table for hours, no one to attend you, despite the fact that I complained at 8 45 that there was no bread, hum, fruits, clean cups, having in mind that breakfast lasts until 10am!!!!! After two complains, situation remained the same, and on the top of it staff acted so rudely, for them the client-oriented rinciple does not exist! The rate of the hotel is deceiving, it should hardly get two stars!
Old place with bad service. At least it was clean but the whole inventory is in poor condition. This was the worst experience at beautiful Sicily. Avoid this place at any cost. The rating of this hotel shlud not exeed 2 stars.
The hotel outside building is from late sixties, but inside is clean and nice. Reception was fast, correct and helpfull. Room is large and bathroom room. Bed is not latest furniture but comfortable. Breakfast is more then acceptable. Nice walk to city centre.
We went there after booking a superior room at the 8th floor. Overall, we were a bit disappointed... To start with the good aspects: the staff was nice and helpful, the parking on the roof was large enough to park our car and the room was clean. Now...the location is a little far away from the downtown (30' walk), still ok for touring but not ideal, in a quiet dirty area. I was not excited by the breakfast. It is correct but poor if you look for fruits or vegetables, and the fruit juices are definitely anything but fruit juice. Regarding the room, the shower was really good but impossible to enjoy without flooding the bathroom as the water evacuation is outside the cabin and inefficient. Even the showergel smelt something like...cheese. Come on! The fitness room is currently under work and NOT USABLE, check it with the office desk as we didn't know that when we booked. Furthermore, the rooftop bar was closed, even if part of the place is still accessible on your own. Finally, to finish on something good, if you are interested in running, you can run 1km down the street to end-up on a path cross that will lead you to a nice view on the bay after 500md+ of climbing.
Astoria Palace is an all round dreadful hotel in a poor location. I chose this hotel for 4 nights simply for the parking and road access, big mistake. I believe you need to stay in the centre of Polermo so that you're near the sites, the buses are confusing, and the areas around the city centre are dubious (I would not walk them at night). Don't get it wrong, I loved Polermo. The hotel is located next to noisy fruit and veg markets, the truck horns and yelling start at 4am. The surrounding streets are filthy, even by Palermo standards. It is only 2 k to the old town, but the buses are indirect and irregular, and the streets are difficult to walk. The rooms are old and characterless, the linen is clean but old, the toilet leaked. The safe didn't work and the staff didn't fix it in 4 days of asking. The staff act like they don't want to be there. The coffee is unbelievably bad, I mean undrinkable. The hotel is full of bus tours, and when they all leave at once the small lifts become jammed and you're stuck.
