The Commissioner, part of the Bunkies at Heritage Harbor pays homage to those who made the Illinois and Michigan Canal a reality.
On its completion, the I&M Canal created a new transportation corridor. By connecting the waters of the Illinois River with those of Lake Michigan, a vast all-water route connected widely scattered sections of the United States, specifically the Northwest, South, and East. Travelers from the eastern U. S. took the Erie Canal to Buffalo, New York, where steamboats brought them through the Great Lakes to Chicago. Transferring to canal boats, a 96-mile trip on the I&M Canal brought them to LaSalle/Peru. Here people boarded river steamers bound for St. Louis and New Orleans. The canal opened the floodgates to an influx of new commodities, new people, and new ideas. The opening of the Illinois & Michigan Canal radically reduced the costs of transferring goods, particularly grain, lumber, and merchandise, between Midwestern prairies and the East via the Great Lakes trading system. The degree to which the I&M Canal forever altered life in Chicago cannot be overstated. For the first time, the canal allowed goods from the southern U. S., including sugar, salt, molasses, tobacco, and oranges, to be shipped to Chicago. By cutting travel times, the I&M Canal also precipitated a new era of travel for people between the south to the north.
The cabin is air-conditioned and features a kitchen and a patio, and there's space to spread out with a separate bedroom. Guests can enjoy a TV and stay connected with free WiFi. Other standard amenities include a washing machine and a coffee maker.

Super cute
Everything was as advertised. We did have some minor issues with the heating unit but we figured it out eventually. Also, the dishwasher did not work but we only needed it at the end of our stay. I'm sure it'll get fixed.

Cozy tiny house with potential but some drawbacks
My daughter and I stayed at this tiny house for a girls' getaway and hiking weekend. The space itself was small and minimalist, which we expected and enjoyed for the most part. The records and board games were a thoughtful touch, adding a bit of charm and entertainment to our stay. The community was charming, and I could see it being very bustling in the summer.
However, there were a few issues that took away from the experience. The chairs in the house were quite uncomfortable, leaving no real place to sit and relax besides lying on the bed, which fortunately was comfortable. The shower also had a very slow drain, and when we arrived, the place felt a bit dusty, making it seem like it hadn’t been cleaned thoroughly before our visit.
There were also many beetles and stink bugs inside the house that my daughter relocated to the outside. Additionally, the front step is angled so steeply that it felt a bit unsafe.
Overall, this tiny house has a lot of potential, but a few improvements in cleanliness, furniture, and maintenance would make it much more enjoyable.
