Clarion Collection Hotel Gabelshus

3.5 out of 5.0

The hotel is located in a residential area, a bit far from the center. The hotel has a very warm and welcoming atmosphere, the staff is always kind and available. The breakfast is very good and the dinner here is free, offered by the hotel. Many comfortable living rooms with small fireplaces make the atmosphere really pleasant. Excellent hotel to spend the spare time in total relaxation away from the busy streets of the city center.

The Gabelshus is an attractive and friendly hotel. The room I had was spacious and well-equipped. The bathroom was a little old-fashioned but perfectly adequate. The reception and dining areas are elegant and yet still cosy. The staff were welcoming and efficient. What more could you ask?

I was very pleased with my stay at Clarion Collection Gabelshus. The buiding is a true beauty, perfectly located in a calm and safe neighbourhood, just a few minutes away from the real centre of Oslo. Both means of transport I was using (tram and the great Oslo City Bikes - if you want to come around in Oslo for little money, rent them via the app, they are cheap and omnipresent!) were having stops/stations just around the corner. I enjoyed the very attentive and perfectly trained staff at reception and in the dining hall as much as all the great information about the city, what to do in the hotel (sauna, fitness room, drinks etc.). Room was ok, bathroom perfectly clean, beds comfortable. My single room was very small though and it only had the very basics on offer (no kettle, no ironing, no safe...). (Non-alcoholic) drinks seemed to be expensive, but well, just slightly over Oslo average. What's really great, especially in a city, where dining can easily cost you a fortune of money such as Oslo, is their included dining plan: You don't only get a really good extensive breakfast buffet, they also invite you for some cake and cofe/tea in the afternoon and for a really delicious dinner buffet (though slightly small selection, but hey!, it's included!), which helped me a lot to cut cost during my weekend stay.

Our travel agent booked us into the Gabelshus and said that it was "fairly" convenient to the city and in a quiet area. It a quiet residential area, and reasonably convenient, as we were able to walk into the city (about 15-20 minutes). It was November and the weather was grey and overcast, and that will also be my memory of this hotel. Dreary, long corridors, leading into dark cold public rooms with poor lighting, old-fashioned and in need of a serious upgrade. Bedrooms with dull, low-watt bulbs, teeny, tiny bathrooms with no amenities (and soap in containers on the wall), an outlook from our window of a concrete area filled with cigarette butts. The beds were comfortable and the linens were spotless. The first night we were there the only public rooms that looked comfortable (a lounge with a fireplace and a dining room area) were taken up with a private group, so inaccessible to the rest of us. Meals were served in an open area with dark furniture, and there was no music, no lighting, nothing to make people feel welcome. And staff certainly didn't do anything to make you feel welcome. Both dining room staff and front office staff were perfunctory and efficient, but hardly pleasant and welcoming. One of the features of Clarion Collection hotels is the fact they provide a complimentary breakfast, afternoon "sweets" and a dinner. We've stayed at other Clarion hotels and appreciate these services as food can be expensive in Norway. Breakfast at this hotel was fine, a range of items including smoked salmon, and eggs you could prepare yourself. Coffee from the machines was good and there was an ample supply of everything. Dinners, however, were fairly grim. We were there for several nights and the "salads" were huge bowls of mixed vegetables, coleslaw, etc. and were identical every night (did they make fresh salad or just re-cycle and top up?) The meat/fish dishes were, well, filling, I guess. Reading some of the other reviews I wonder if we were at the same property. It was clean, it was reasonably convenient, and reasonably priced, but it wasn't warm, cheery, comfortable or welcoming. I'd like to think there are more cheerful places in Oslo.

Advantages : Excellent breakfast Hot Drinks all day for free Snacks and light dinner for free Very near a tram station Disadvantages: Room was very small although I was in a double room The room was a bit cold ! Not sure why , yet the bathroom was quite warm.

Great hotel, very easy accessible from the railway station (tram13), and by the walk, very nice service, clean and comfortable room, fantastic breakfast and evening meal, nice, relaxed atmosphere. I will be back there.

Elegant hôtel well situated in fashionable Frogner area i central Oslo. Very friendly and calm atmosphere, in beautiful surroundings. Short distance to a broad selection of restaurants and cafes, and ample opportunity for some upscale shopping. Highly recommended!

The Gabelshus is an old, big house with a welcoming atmosphere. The rooms are clean and tidy, even if they could be refurbished. Very nice breakfast and good surprise this afternoon sweet and dinner which are included in the price, specially when Oslo is such expensive. Good placement, 2 stops from the National Theater stop in the very center of the city, and 5 minutes walk from seaside and in the other direction a nice part of the town with small shops and cafés.

This hotel feels more like a home than hotel due to it's residential location, small size and interior decor. I appreciated the selection of food both at breakfast and the evening meal. Some of the evening food was overcooked though. Another instance of sloppiness was the menu for the evening meal, which was a confusing jumble of incorrectly spelled English and Norwegian. I enjoyed the gym, but it could definitely use some more equipment.

Amazed by this hidden jewel of a hotel in oslo- only one available for a one-night stay, and I was truly surprised and amazed by this place. very nice and quiet street, hotel look like a big hous from the outside, but inside it stretches out in the back of the building, and its a lot larger than you believe at arrival. Very nice rooms and good beds, then add on the beast breakfast in town- plus smiling crew- nothing more to say!
