This is a very ordinary hotel but excellent value for money, when one considers budget hotel prices in general. Clean, decent, very central. Staff friendly and helpful. Service excellent. Highly recommended.
Travelling through north Italy and needing an overnight stay La Croce de Malta in Novara just outside Milan turned out to be a most pleasent stay. A nice and clean room with air condition and a good bathroom that provided exactly what you need for a stopover at your travel. Combine this with exceptionel service and hospitality and your 75 Euro spend were the best price/performance. The people at the hotel were able to help you with anything in Novara - which turned out to be a cosy town for an overnight stay - from restaurant booking, helping with bus or train departures to either Malpensa Airport or Milan and even drive you to the trainstation. And they make the best coffee for breakfast ;-)
Such a convenient place to stay, ideal for centre and getting to and from train and buses at the door almost. I confirm all the comments made about location and staff. Even took my case and ran with me to the bus outstanding service. Would go back Thanks to all
I have to say that Croce di Malta is one of the best hotels I have ever stayed in Novara, the owners are wonderful people, they treat you with excellency and make you feel just right at home and they are very kind, the rooms are very clean and neat, I highly recommend everybody to stay at la Croce di Malta!
a very simple hotel, brings back the 80s it was very cold, so they brought us a very small antique heater awful breakfast, decent staff, decent location good price compared with other places in novara
Croce di Malta has friendly and efficient staff and the hotel is spotlessly clean. The breakfast has a good variety and coffee is made freshly for each guest. The location in Novara is central to all the attractions of this delightful city, especially walking around the historical centre and the markets a few hundred metres away (3 times each week) A train from Novara to Milano takes about 25 minutes and this makes Novara a cheaper option for sightseeing, even through to Venice on the same line. Perhaps for Venice you could stay at Padua close by, again much cheaper accommodation than in Venice itself.
We were pleasantly surprised by the room's quality and size. The hotel is situated on a busy junction with traffic lights which means there can be a lot of traffic noise particularly early morning. It's the trucks and buses pulling away which create the rumbling vibrations. There was no parking on site but the receptionist is well versed in directing you to local parking spaces. You need to park around the corner outside some shops till 6 pm or so when the commuters move away. Then you can park for free in a side road across the street. You can stop outside for unloading. The main attraction is the Basilica within walking distance. The town centre is pedestrianised and has a number of al fresco bars and coffee shops. An attractive, vibrant place. For eating we can definitely recommend a local trattoria. Turn right out of the hotel, 1st right and walk to the bottom of the slope. Diagonally right is a collonade where the restaurant is. We had a set meal of 3 excellent fish dishes for around 30 euros. Breakfast was OK but nothing spectacular. All in all a good hotel. The Croce di Malta is located in the center of Novara, just opposite one of the numerous parks that fill this charming 19th-century city less than an hour west of Milan. I prepaid on-line for a small attic room, which was perfect for a single traveller. As occurs in Italian buildings, the elevator did not go all the way to the top floor, so I did have to carry my suitcase up the final short flight; this might present a challenge to some travellers. Breakfast was adequate and was served in an underground salon. The spartan atmosphere is the only reason for 4 stars instead of 5; otherwise this hotel is a very good bargain and centrally located for tourism or business.
If boutique hotels are your thing this is unlikely to be for you. Very spacious room and excellent large bed as one hopes to find in a traditional Italian hotel. The continental breakfast was better than average. Not everything perfect however. Fixtures and fittings seemed oldish and not always in good working order e.g one bedside light and bathroom heater didn't come on. Also top missing from mixer tap over basin. In spite of this we would probably return as any problems were dealt with at once and willingly by young woman on reception who also served breakfast and appeared to take care of our room. Conveniently located a pleasant 10 to 15 minute stroll through the charming old town from the railway station with the train journey to Milano Centrale only taking 34 minutes. We preferred staying in Novara to Milan itself.
