Hotel La Margherita & SPA3.0 out of 5.0

Stayed twice on a 10 day trip. 1st room excellent but 2nd small. Check out was long and laborious even though we had pre paid. Owner didn't seem to care. Would stay again because of location but felt some staff thought they did not have to try due to it's popularity.
We traveled here for the Rally Italia Sardegna and wanted to stay in Alghero. La Margherita was in a pretty central location, about 10 minutes from the service center where the cars were being housed. The staff at the hotel, made this hotel better! As it's a bit dated. Super friendly, very informative and gave some excellent restaurant tips! Parking was a bit of a pain, as it's down a street close by to the hotel, but you have to ask for keys and unlock two gates in order to get in a out, which after a long day of exploring is an additional hassle. Nothing massive, but just additional. It's also not free parking, you pay per night. Wifi was rather slow. Breakfast was included and quite basic.
The images on TripAdvisor from the rooms are really misleading. Upon arrival we were looking for a bed that wasn't as hard as the bed we got, so we were given 7 room keys to select the room/bed we wanted. All of them looked much more shabby than the 'nice' room on the picture. Furthermore the rooftop was in total decay and no breakfast was served there. We visited this hotel well outside high season and that was noticeable everywhere. The breakfast downstairs was poor and at 9 AM all the fresh goods were finished. Comment: "my boss doesn't want too much food there". When checking in it was confirmed that usage of the spa was included, but this turned out only to be for the pool, steam room or sauna were €15 pp. All in all very poor hospitality!
Given its great views over the town and the bay towards the "Sleeping Giant" I am sure when it opened La Margherita set the tone for other hotels to follow. Some decades on, it could probably do with a bit of facelift, but not to make it another soul-less hotel, but just to add to its charm. The staff were very friendly, offering free Italian lessons when collecting the key, Uno, Quattro, Otto. Room was clean and comfortable, although the bed would be a tad too hard for some folks. Breakfast was ok. Typical hotel buffet fare, but more than adequate. Car Parking that comes with the Hotel is underground close by, but if you are going to use it then a small car is advisable, as its tight. Beach associated with the hotel is a bit of a hike away, so if you have got little ones, I would personally book somewhere with closer beach access, but if you haven't got little ones to consider and want somewhere close to town, within easy access of some great restaurants and bars then this is as good a choice as any.
We had a really good stay here, the location was great, the room was good and clean and was cleaned daily. The spa was amazing and very relaxing. Breakfast was good and served on a balcony which had great views.
As I booked this a while ago, I was reading reviews on here to remind me about what I had booked. However, instead of finding comfort, it made me a little apprehensive to see reviews which suggested the rooms weren't great. However, maybe it was just our luck that we got one of the better rooms but I found the room and bathroom was a great size, with decor making it light, airy and welcoming! Breakfast was very good, considering it was included in the cheap price of the hotel. Location great, with a very short walk round the corner to the bus stop and close to the old town which is great for shops and restaurants alike.
Good hotel Central to city and beaches good public transport to the outer areas and beaches Clean tidy and friendly staff helpful and informative Breakfast is a little bland and could do with a few more choices Overall the hotel was good value for money and the spa was a great place to go to and chill out and relax
We chose this hotel because of it's central location. And yes, the location is very nice and very central. But. Hotel rooms' furniture and decoration is very old and just crappy. Economy rooms are horrible. Some of them also have an unpleasant smell. I mean I do understand the economy category hotel level, but this one was actually 90/120 EUROs per room, and for this price I would expect more. Nevertheless the hotel manager was quite nice giving us the possibility to choose from all the available rooms after we were really unsatisfied about the room given to us the first time. So after a third try we could at least choose the room with a decent view. But in general all the rooms are the same. Bad. Stairways and corridors of the hotel look like hospital. And ... There's a guy singing all day long at the reception. Mediocre kraoke level singing! And in the morning he sings at the breakfast!! Starting from 8.00. So if you live on the fourth floor as we did (right under the terrace where the breakfast is served)-you just won't be able to sleep after 8 am-cause this horrible singing will get to you.
I stayed here for a week in August and I have to agree with other comments. The pictures so look way nicer than the reality. Our room was clean enough and was quiet which was a plus. We had a balcony which was small - just enough space for 2 chairs. The breakfast was basic and the breakfast area is quite grim despite it being on the roof. We only had breakfast up there once as found it not worth bothering with. Plus side - great location to the old town and easy to get too on foot. I really liked Algerho but wouldn't go back to this hotel. We found a lovely place where we used to have pre-dinner cocktails and watched the sunset called VIlla Mosca not too far from our hotel. Lovely place and not too pricey either. GO for drinks ...... or the restaurant which was also really good.
I'm afraid I have to echo what others have said about the pictures bring deceptive. The hotel is in desperate need of updating and the facilities is basic. We booked on booking.com which said it was a 4 star hotel, but clearer outside it shows 3 stars only which maybe explains why it's so basic. But we paid for a 4 star hotel, and so definitely feel we overpaid. The breakfast selection is extremely poor, Ive never come across a hotel without eggs for breakfast, of any kinds. We are veggies so cant eat the cold meats. This and cereal are the only options, and given the price I think more cereal is deserved. I'm afraid I always leave breakfast feeling hungry. On the plus side , the staff are very friendly and helpful. The location is great and the room is clean and the bed comfortable. The area isn't too noisy at night, do can get peaceful sleep.
