Howard Johnson may be showing some signs of aging, but it is really not a factor. The hotel has comfortable rooms and the decor is still modern. Plenty of friendly staff, but there is a language barrier as with most other hotels. You do get around, but keep your requests simple. My room was in the B-Block and the windows overlooked the INSIDE of the conference room. No outside view. TIP: Request a room in the A-Block.
This hotel ticked the right boxes. Good location, quiet, clean and polite, smiling professional staff. I only stayed one night in Ningbo as a stop over on my way home and I was very impressed by the service of this Hotel. On arrival our bags were taken from the taxi into the lobby where we were greeted with a warm fruit drink. The check-in was handled in a very professional manner and the staff spoke excellent English. The whole procedure took just a few minutes. We were shown to our rooms by the same young lady who did the check-in and on reaching the floor we were greeted by our personal butler who spoke a little English and tried her hardest to explain the pillow selection and the other little perks that came with the room. The room itself was a nice size, well appointed and the temperature set to a pleasant 23c as it was mid winter. The bed was extremely comfortable and the choice of pillows, excellent. The bathroom has a bath or walk-in rain forest shower and was well equipped. The water temperature was excellent as this can be a major problem in many Chinese hotels. Breakfast was the normal buffet style with a choice of western or Chinese cuisine and was more than adequate for one's needs. Check-out was effortless and to cap off the stay there was the complimentary hotel minibus to take us to the airport.
Didn’t have much expectation when I checked into the hotel. Didn’t stay in the hotel chain before. However I was very pleased that they provide warm milk to my room before bed time. Very thoughtful and excellent service.
I stayed here one night as part of a tour group visiting Pu Tuo Shan. This is not my first stay at the Howard Johnson Sunshine Plaza, Ningbo. I stayed here last year and wrote a review on that occasion. I’m afraid the hotel is getting a bit stale now. It is beginning to look a bit tired and urgently needs “revamping.” The carpets in the hotel lobby need either to be comprehensively cleaned or replaced, as do the ones in the rooms. My wife and I were apparently upgraded, and although the room was fairly good there were no blankets made available in the room. The quilt was fine, but I found the room to be a little chilly. Other hotels can make blankets available. We had the breakfast buffet the following morning. The Food & Beverage Manager needs to do his job properly and train his staff. It is not enough to have 2 - 3 young ladies dressed in twee Santa Claus outfits standing at the buffet entrance greeting guests. There needs to be trained staff on duty who know what they are doing. Is it too much to ask to have bowls placed NEXT to the cereal dishes, with Western-style spoons available? Why is the cereal served in rather impractical Kilmer-style jars? Why are the cereal bowls located some distance from the cereals themselves? Why are only Chinese-style spoons made available? There is no fresh fruit made available - only fruit in a rather cloying, sweet syrup. Individual pots of yoghurt should be made available in different flavours - not just one flavour dispensed from a machine. Staff should be trained in English by a native English speaker, in order to be able to communicate in English with guests. The staff should be able to handle a query as simple as “where is the coffee machine, please?” As I say, the hotel needs a re-vamping. It needs to “up its game” as it is getting left behind.
I just spent one night at HJP which is not enough to judge all possible items in this hotel. So I just can refer to three impressions: -room: big rooms, very good bed, but poor quality. Cracked tiles, shower head mounting broke after just taking the shower head in my hand -location: quite central, good.. also airport can be reached within 20 minutes (without big traffic) -service: One example can show the huge discrepancies within the service: The guy at the lobby was quite friendly when wellcoming us while the lady beneath him looked bored all the time. After check-in we asked the guy where we could find the bar or lounge. Two times he stated that there is no bar or lounge existing although I have found this in the hotel description. I was very confused and tried by myself and it was very easy to find - directly after the hotel entrance was a huge bar. Really incomprehensible. The bar stuff could hardly speak English and was very lazy. It was much more interesting to check the mobile rather than offering service or offering another drink. For me it was the first and the last time.
I stayed at this very same hotel more than a year ago, or was it 18 months? Things have improved greatly, hence this second review. Check-In goes smoothly, less than 5 minutes. I am given Room 1111. 6 lifts to go up and down, meaning waiting time is to the minimum. The room is spacious with a separate seating room, and it offers all the stuff one might need while inside their room, including a near-professional iron, comfy slippers and plushy bathrobes. The bathroom is well-lite and accommodates a shower and a bathtub. The desk is wide enough and the seat is comfortable for those long hours spent in front of the screen. More importantly, the Wi-Fi is extremely fast at all times, surely the fastest connection I have experienced in China. Breakfast starts at 0600 am, which means one has time to enjoy the limited variety of food, including international & Chinese dishes. There is a corner dedicated to pastries, which are obviously not baked on side, except for the so-called French toasts. Although decent, the food could be of better quality as to match the newly established standards of this Hotel. Check-Out at 0900 am was a bit busy, but the front-desk staff worked efficiently, and I left in no time. There are still some renovation works going on, and banging, drilling and hammering can be heard as early as 0730 am. All in all, I had a pleasant and efficient stay. This Hotel has managed to reveal all its potential. The staff is professional, attentive and goes out of their way to help. This is a sure bet.
Beautiful Hotel!! Straight across from the amazing Moon Lake Park which is lovely, could have spent a couple of days wandering through it. Check in easy, very attentive staff . Highly recommend!!! Only about a 10 min walk to Tianyi Square.
I stayed for various business requirements. The room was very hot on arrival and took overnight to cool from 26 to 23 degrees which was only achieved by leaving a loyalty card in the slot whilst I was out taking my room key with me. Beds are very comfy with a range of pillow softness options. View not great as there is a lot of building work happening outside currently. Breakfast - lots of variety including fruits and omelettes. Not great on English breakfast although options are available. Remember it is China and therefore food is bound to be different. Lastly gym great. Quiet when I used it but with modern facilities.
This is a luxury hotel with very nice and helpful staff. Although some speak poor English. I had a superior suite in block B. A Spacious room. Sadly the cleaning was not five star quality. And the wi-fi was rather weak mostly, as in many Chinese hotels. As I personally was not so fond of the surroundings I won't come back to this hotel again.
The hotel was very good. There's tea service in the lobby. The staff don't speak very well English with the exception of a few that spoke better than the rest. The breakfast was included but we didn't eat the breakfast at all. It mainly catered to the Chinese. We were in Business Superior Suite, and our room was excellent, minus the fact that we were facing behind the building and it was full of garbage, so the beautiful view went out the window. We tried the restaurant for lunch and we order Lamb Chops and Salmon with Seafood Risotto dish, but only received the salmon dish after trying to explain to the server that we only received one of our dish, she went back and brought us another Salmon Risotto dish after 20 mins. The food was good but a little pricey for what we ordered. Keep in mind in the whole seafood Risotto dish probably had one forth of a shrimp, so it doesn't classify as seafood. All in all the hotel was exceptional with some minor glitches.
