Pains me to give a poor review, but the accommodation was not very pleasant. The owner was very welcoming and friendly. The location of our room was overlooking the lagoon which was great. Sadly though the room was not clean. The bed and pillows stunk so much I had to sleep sitting in the chair. No hot water for shower and shower recess was falling to bits. Fridge was not clean, breakfast included a rusty tin of spagetti. Can not believe the ratings for this property, What we found was a result of long term neglect. Reading the other reviews I notice that what we found was very similar to others, including the airport pickup mix up. We were lucky we only had one night here. Over the next two weeks of our stay we discovered that the Sunrise had quite a reputation for all the wrong reasons.
Sunrise beach bungalows ticks all the boxes. I was greeted with an early checkin after arriving early in the morning and upgraded to a ocean view bungalow. The property is right on the ocean and is very green and kept clean. It's about a 15 min walk into Muri centre or Muri Beach, which makes this location great. Otherwise, there are bicycles you can use free of charge. I used the bicycle a few times to get into town and used the lock provided to ensure noboby steals it. Hearing the ocean waves as I was falling asleep and waking up is priceless and the accommodation has all necessities required for a stay. The fridge worked very well and was freezing cold, a kettle, microwave, cd player etc was in the room. For the price, location, and room, it is good value and worth staying here. The owner is very friendly and helpful and on the ball. Thanks for a great stay
I have stayed at the bungalows 3 times now and find them to be clean tidy and well run. Caryn works hard to keep every one happy.Help full information,The room was cleaned and linen changed as needed.
It was 2 couples travelling together. Hotel TSFR was requested in original booking, however no one was there to collect us at 1:30am when we landed. Upon arrival at hotel, we were greeted by a confused manager, Caryn, as she cancelled the one booking without notifying us, which was booked via her website. All 4 of us were loaded into a temporary room, which consisted of a toilet with half a broken lid, a bed with uncomfortable springs, a melted curtain and a rusted tin of spaghetti. The couple who had their booking cancelled slept on a fold out couch below our bed. They did get this night no charge. We were moved to two originally booked beach bungalows the next morning. These were slightly better condition. Although, the tiles on our patio were cracked and had matts placed over the broken tiles. The garden/beach tables broken, toaster broken, we booked an aircon room but it cost us a further $40 / day to activate, the sheets were old and stained (apparently, bleach is not used with laundry). Our bungalow roof and shower curtain were covered in mould. We later found out by our one mate travelling with us that Caryn asked her if my partner and I were gay and that it wasn’t a problem as she has a gay friend herself and then compared being gay to autism and that its like there’s a kink in the wiring. I’m assuming she meant no harm by this and maybe just has difficulty communicating things? I fully understand Caryn is running the accommodation on her own, that she has a lot on her plate and that she is over tourism (according to her) but just feel she should rethink how she deals with her guests as there seemed to be quite a bit of complaining coming from her, whether you asked a direct question or she just randomly walked past you. People travel a long way for a holiday and don’t need that kind of anxiety when trying to relax.
Dirty rooms, bed linen, no air con, broken chairs, bbq, pool tiles, toaster. Our booking had been mysteriously cancelled do we had to share a room with our friends the first night but faur enough karen sorted it out next day. She is overworked, understaffed and is over hospo - her words not mine. This is not beach front either. I'd feel sorry for her if she hadn't made racist abd homophobic comments. She needs help and the place needs some investment. We'll not stay there again. Shame as it does have potential.
Sunrise Beach Bungalows, where do I start. Firstly it was 2 separate bookings for 2 couples, one made through a booking site and the other directly on their website. We arrive at the airport after booking transfers, and no one there to collect us. Now reading the reviews, this should have been a warning sign. So its 0130am and now trying to arrange for a taxi to drop us off. We get to the Bungalows, for Caryn to let us know the booking made directly on her site was cancelled? This after me emailing (yet to receive a response!) and even calling her due to no response to email, to be told all was fine. Now, you'll often hear how the broadband gets blamed for everything but ironically we used the paid wifi and that seemed to work most of the time, but let me continue. So after saying she's now cancelled the booking, and has no other rooms available we suggest to bunk up in one bungalow, and sort it all out tomorrow. By this time it's 0200am and we are shattered. Caryn is aggressive in her approach and offered no apology. In fact in one of the many unfortunate dealings with her she actually said she's done with tourism. And boy, is this blatantly obvious. If you need anything it's made very clear how you're annoying her. Her tone and response is beyond appalling and eventually I had to get one of my mates to deal with her, as I could no longer tolerate her. Needless to say, the room we had booked (and paid for) wasn't available and we were placed in a garden room the first night. The Bungalows, our ceiling was black from mould and spider webs. The shower curtain had black mould. Our toaster was broken. Our patio had rubber mats placed over shattered and missing tiles. The linen was soiled and stained. The initial garden room we were all placed into had a broken cistern lid. The bedroom curtains were burnt. The "welcome breakfast" was a rusted tin of spaghetti. Tv reception is not watchable. Rooms are not serviced. It's hot, so after 2 nights of no sleep we requested the key for the aircon, $40 extra a night! (And it cools the room down marginally, but by no means can it handle this heat) The pool, shattered tiles all around. BBQ rusted and wheels fallen off and on bricks. Outdoor furniture by pool broken and needing repair. Garden lighting had broken coverings and or non existent. The free use of snorkel gear was a joke, it's unusable and should actually be binned. To add insult to injury, Caryn asked my straight mate if my partner and I were gay. She added that "she has a gay mate, but being gay is like autism, there's a kink in the wire" My mate wisely chose to only tell us that on the way back to the airport. I will just leave that there. On the positive side, the beachfront units offer lovely views and the gardens were also very well kept. Some really loveable dogs, which follow you around and are harmless. We loved Raro, it's spectacular and will definitely be back, but the accomodation left a lot to be desired.
Serene location with spectacular views . You can watch the sunrise if you have an oceanview bungalow. Hermit crabs to keep you company at night. Sea breeze to keep you cool night and day, just 6 minutes drive from Muri Night Markets. Caryn is a lovely hard working lady who was very warm and welcoming. Her open hospitality made our stay very enjoyable. Definetly my favourite place to stay in raro and I will definetly stay here again on my future trips to Rarotonga !!!!
I am an accountant and came over feeling that I may be bored. WRONG. Sunrise is fantastic. We used the pool every day. The view. Million dollar view in anyone's language. A few minutes away from magnificent beaches. The greatest thing is that it's not too big. It's quiet, clean and relaxing. Twelve days and I am not bored. That's amazing for me. Do not expect to come and have the facilities of the Hilton hotel. Be realistic. Do expect a relaxed environment with fantastic people who are trying to sell to you every five minutes. We will be back.
We stayed at Sunrise for our third time in September 2016. Caryn has always been very welcoming and on each occasion picked up up from late night flights at the airport. On each stay we have always seen whales out front off our balcony. This stay we counted 7 humpbacks quite close. The bungalows are set in very attractive gardens and the pool surrounds are well presented with a BBQ and plenty of outdoor furniture. The presentation of the gardens is a credit to Caryn. Over the past four years there have been noticeable improvements to the bungalows. On each stay we have enjoyed the peaceful, quiet location. The individual bungalows are pleasant, extremely clean, well-presented and comfortable. We enjoy many hours on the shelted landing and there are plenty of loungers out front for sunbathing. We feel sunrise is good value with very pleasant and restful atmosphere. We hope to return for a fourth stay in the future.
We stayed only one night at the end of our trip and were happy with our choice. It represented great value and the host could not have been more helpful. It is basic accommodation but our beachfront bungalow had a most glorious view. There as a pool and bbq onsite which we did not use, and I understand if you stay more than one night, Caryn will include airport transfers. Basic breakfast provisions were included - much appreciated. If you've done your homework, you will realize that this is not set on a beach where you will swim or snorkel, or even walk upon - but is lovely to view from your bungalow. Ideal base for the portion of your trip where you're rarely at home and out exploring the island. We stayed the balance of our trip on beaches that were wonderful for swimming/snorkeling (titikaveka and vaimaanga). We would certainly stay again for a short stay at either end of a visit.
