We usually drive out to Terrace Downs once a year for lunch at the Cafe. Cafe overlooks golf course & lake... truly a lovely setting. Food and service is average to good but it’s the stunning view that’s the attraction. Road out to Terrace Downs is mostly flat and a comfortable, approximately 70min drive.

This review is for our experience at The Cafe located at Terrace Downs on the 29th Dec. On a positive note, the setting and views were truly amazing and we should have stopped at that point. We initially asked for an outside table but were told that these tables were all occupied. We were seated at 12:30 for lunch and our order was taken shortly thereafter. At this stage I noticed that some of the outside tables were being vacated but we were not offered to be reseated. I assumed that these tables had been reserved, they were not. Our drinks arrived within 10 minutes and the waitress did explain that there might be a delay with the lunch order. Taking note of the other tables, about half were occupied . After at least half an hour, we noticed that the previously seated guests had not been served any meals and some customers were approaching the staff enquiring as to their orders. At the 40 minute mark, a waitress did approach us to apologise for the delay. No explanation was given as to why everyone was waiting. We asked how much longer until the meals would arrive and were assured that our meals were nearly at the pass. It took another 15 minutes before lunch made an appearance. Unfortunately, the meals were very average. My steak sandwich was cold, my wife's Ceaser Salad had croutons included even though we asked for these to left out as she is Gluten Free, my mother's lamb burger was also cold. As we had waited nearly an hour and we had over an hour's drive back home, we were not inclined to send the meals back and wait even longer. To top things off, we were given the wrong bill and I had to recount our order to ensure we were charged correctly. The duty manager offered no apology for this or for the delays that all the customers were experiencing. The credit card surcharge was an added insult. Overall, very unimpressed by the level of service displayed. Although the waitress was very pleasant and friendly, there was no communication or updates regarding the delays with the meals. I can only hope that the service levels improve to match the setting.

Absolutely amazing I would have loved our 2 day breakaway to have been longer thank you again right down to the room service fantastic. Loved the spa the villa was amazing and the view magical the best golf course in the south island.

Great place to stay for a large group of golfers. We stayed in the large house which was perfect for a Large group of alpha males. Restaurant was fantastic with excellent service. Would recommend for large groups.

What a fantastic place and right on the door step of my home town Ashburton, I have never realised this hidden gem was so close we always travel further afield for our adventures. Took my husband to celebrate his birthday. We stayed in a villa, the views were majestic and peaceful over looking the golf course and alps. Villa was clean, modern and well appointed with a spa bath and shower with a views. We don't play golf but were more than entertained with Claybird shooting, Archery (reviewed separately) and a wander down towards the gorge were enough to keep us occupied. The villa had a spacious kitchen dinning room but to be honest it's a short walk to the club house where you will find the Hunters restaurant for an evening meal. The views are again spectacular only to be out done by the presentation, quality and taste of the food 10/10. I wish I'd taken pic's our meals looked amazing and tasted excellent. Sadley the cafe for lunch was pretty ho-hum. Service was excellent throughout the whole stay. Defiantly worth the money.

We stayed for 5 days at the end of our NZ tour of the South Island. It seemed to be a very quiet time of the year as there were not many people around. We stayed in a villa overlooking the back 9 of the golf course, a wonderful view with the mountains in the background. The villa was very nice, with a good bed and a large well fitted bathroom (although having louvered windows between the bathroom and bedroom may look good but is not practical at night). The open plan living area was spacious, but in our villa the kitchen cookware was not good, - the frypans should be put in the rubbish they were so old and damaged. A small selection of chips, chocolate and drinks renewed each day and included in the tarriff was a nice touch though. I can't comment on the clubhouse restaurant as we chose not to eat there, (rightly or wrongly) the sheer number of negative tripadvisor reviews about the food was a bit off-putting given the high prices being charged. We did play the golf course, it has an interesting layout and a discount for house guests. It's a fairly challenging course from the blue marks, but we were disappointed with condition of the fairways which had a number of different grasses inc. passpallum and had not been cut for a while. In all a very pleasant stay.

High quality deluxe accommodation very private and had birds singing outside the door creating a real feeling of a get away. Dining experiences were enjoyable, dining at Hunters was a food and service delight , beautiful location and golf course a challenge and a pleasure. Friendly and helpful staff in all areas contributed to an enjoyable mini break - wish we could have stayed longer.

Brilliant as always and totally recommended to those looking for a weekend break with scenery that is stunning A golf course that is outstanding with some amazing views and challenging holes Only 1 hour drive from Chch

Had a great night away on golf package . Fantastic day of golf, back to the villa for lovely platter and bottle of wine sitting overlooking the golf course towards the rugged scenery. Lovely way to spend our wedding anniversary

Terrace Downs is a stunning and beautiful location given it is such a short distance from Christchurch. We only had one night, and a day but it seemed much longer, and was very relaxing. The grounds, views, and golf course are fantastic. The staff were very friendly. and the accommodation was great.
