We have been back a couple of times, and each visit in July is pure pleasure. Rest, thalassa-spa/massages, hikes or bicycling around the Island or simply sitting enjoying the sea view. Try the fresh seafood, especially oysters. Try not to eat all the desserts... delicious, especially the crème de caramel au beurre salé... Good visits: Musée Citadelle Vauban, Sarah Bernhardt's home, Lighthouse, private garden: Jardin de la Boulaye. Order special glasses/objects at "Fluïd" - creative local glassmakers. Even the ride to/from the mainland is enjoyable.
Absolutely fantastic view and dinner venue, exquisite wine cellar, very friendly and service minded staff. All this comes at a cost, but we felt very well taken care of, and just to picture the level, once heading back, the Castel Clara chef recognised us on the ferry leaving Belle Ille, and specifically came forward and treated us, hoping our stay had been what we wanted etc. I am a bit surprised that in an establishment like Castel Clara English is not so well spoken (including spa brochures) even though we both speaks French as well, it did not pose a problem. Nice surroundings and very relaxing, small nice villages. We will go back!
We stayed at a junior suite, overlooking the bay. We were very lucky with the weather, big blue sky and expansive sea view. However, the room was right above one of its restaurants. It could be very noisy in the evening. Dinners often finished around 10.30pm. We were charged over € 450 a night, but could not have quiet time. The room has a balcony, but is overlooked by dinners downstairs. No privacy at all. Breakfast was alrigit, enough choices. We also tried the seafood buffet. Unfortunately my partner had stomach upset the second day. As it was very warm, there were flies flying around the seafood.
The hotel is fine and the staff is polite and helpful. Spa & Thalasso are also good, but not all their practitioners have same level of experience. I was disappointed with 1 massage out of 3. The biggest downside of its hotel is the fact that there is no light menu for diner. Most of the Thalasso I have visited lately already have integrated light 400-600 calorie 3 course options into their menus (that taste delicious by the way). This one proudly announces that it's diners are between 800 and 1200 calories. Don't know about you, but for me it is quite a lot especially if you plan to have a healthy time off and go to bed early feeling light. Nevertheless the food in the restaurant 360 was rather good and Desserts were really a piece of art that I had no choice, but to consume ;)
Our family of four just returned from a 13 day trip to France of which Castel Clara and Our four days on Bele Ile en Mer were the highlight. We experienced travel difficulties on both ends of our stay at Castel Clara. Flight delays, car rental delays, and the six hour sprint to Quiberon just in time to catch the last ferry had us reaching our destination just befor 11:00 PM. (our original target had been 4:00) We were warmly met with a fantastic late meal and a glass of wine on the balcony of our lovely room. The morning of our departure, one family member was ill and the management and staff were extreamly helpful . Helping us with pharmacy needs, providing late departure, communicating with our next hotel, and changing ferry reservations. As if that were not enough, our daughter left a beloved stuffed bear which they promptly had shipped home. Aside from this special attention to our particular fiascos, we love this hotel. The rooms were beautiful, great beds with crisp linens, ample well designed bathrooms. Breakfast is massive and delicious, and our evening meal at thier restaurant was memorable. And I say without hesitation, every member of staff we encountered was warm friendly and very helpful. Our four days could not do justice to the rugged coastline and charming fishing villages of this special island. Nor did it allow for enough time to simple sit on the comfortable deck and just absorb the beautiful view and warm atmosphere. We look forward to a return trip.
The hotel shuttle from the port to the hotel is free and perfectly organised. Staff are friendly and professional, the classic style. The hotel location is behind the wild and spectacular Ocean cliffs. An oasis with big trees and with an interesting view. Having a drink on the lounge deck is very romantic. The rooms are of good quality and perfectly in shape. Room renovation is ongoing. The Spa has many rooms for treatments, sauna and hammam is not very big. Dinner in the Café Clara has a nice view. You have to decide between buffet or the menu. This is not easy. Breakfast is also in the Café Clara which is of rich and good quality, but expensive. Few alternatives restaurants are within miles. The Castel Clara is the best hotel on the Isle, a nature place, you need a good budget to stay there and having treatments.
Beautiful location, excellent staff and restaurant, but they have gone bananas about being "green." Body wash/shampoo was bolted to the wall in the shower and hight and to the left of the double sinks, a very inconvenient location. The first trime I tried to get some soap for the sink, I got sprayed in the chest. The separate toilet room in our suite had an sink, but NO SOAP. Internet is extremely slow, not what we expected in a Relais et Chateau 4 star facility. No room air conditioning. Windows open, but there are no ties for the drapes to prevent them from blowing out the windows in the wind. Otherwise, an excellent hotel.
We spend 6 days at this resort and just loved it. Location is real nice and quiet, other than some children running around and noisy, but it was holiday season. Breakfast was superb and dinners were quite good. Staff was excellent and as helpful as could be. We had some issues with picking up our son that was meeting us, and we're helped every way. We would love to return. The island is just unbelievable.
This hotel truly is lovely, though expensive. The staff were wonderful. We stayed for five days in a sea-view room, and, though the weather was not always ideal, simply looking out of our window at Port Gopher was a delight. We found the gastronomique restaurant to be very fine. Certainly we would stay here again, though probably not during the school holidays. Three things to keep in mind: The amenities are not provided in miniature containers in order to reduce waste. Of course this is fine, but the pump bottles of shower gel, etc., were bolted to the wall, which made them difficult, in some cases, to access as well as giving the guest the feeling that management was afraid the guest would steal them. There were a LOT of families at this hotel in the month of August. One glance, at night, into the Café Clara gave the impression of a Day Care Center rather than a pleasant restaurant. We were indeed happy we had opted for the other dining option. Also, the wifi is rather slow.
Hmmm..fiendishly expensive, almost justified by superb location, friendly staff...but some niggardly touches which leave some poor taste, eg one towel, corked wine, unreplenished water in room..I could go on. Gastronomic restaurant not yet up to scratch.
