Good city to visit and great location for train station and city center

We were upgraded to a room with a gigantic bathtub & balcony, after the sink in our 1st room wouldn't drain properly. The 2nd room was magnificent. A bathtub so big that 4 people could easily be in it (4 big people) and a huge balcony overlooking the main square (la Comedie). The bedding very comfortable. However, the maid never cleaned at all after our first night (claiming we had the "sleeping" sign up, which was simply not true). We came home at 1:30 a.m. from a very long day sight seeing to Carcassonne to find it a mess including breakfast plates, and unmade bed, and no one on staff able to help. The breakfast is decent in the morning, albeit a bit pricey for value. The room for breakfast is lovely. Overall, a good location, nice rooms, nice staff, but better management of housekeeping generally would help. Also, staff should be ready to assist with baggage, as you cannot park or pull up to the hotel if you are driving.

The Grand Hotel du Midi sits on the edge of the bustling Place de la Comedie, close to great shopping, lively cafes and the pedestrian labyrinth of the historical center, and is perfect for an evening at the magnificent theater of the Opera-Comedie. It is an easy walk from the train station, even lugging a ridiculously heavy suitcase. If you get there by car, the parking situation is not ideal, but keep in mind that this is an old city, so no complaints. There is parking in the public garage under the Place de la Comedie which you need to cross with your luggage once you emerge from the elevator, and the hotel validates your ticket for a small discount. Better check with the hotel directly ahead of time to make arrangements and get details. The personnel was extremely friendly. The night staff at the front desk even helped me figure out why my iPad wouldn't connect to the Internet (which works perfectly fine and is provided at no additional charge) and looked up some information I needed on their own computer. A couple of minor annoyances: you need to climb a few steps to get to the lobby - not very practical if you have a monster bag or some physical impairment - and it took me a while to figure out the coffee-maker in the room, whereas a simple instruction sheet would have saved me time and frustration. Incidentally, I had read in a past review that there was a charge for the in-room coffee and found that not to be the case. Tea and an electric kettle were also provided, as well as a complimentary bottle of water. The interior design is an acquired taste. I call it Funky European Modern with more misses than hits, but gorgeous black and white photographs of ballet dancers in action adorned the walls and were most appropriate, considering that the Opera-Comedie is right across the street. My room was surprisingly spacious, with amenities such as slippers and fluffy robes. In the bathroom a large heated towel rail accommodated the soft bath sheets, and Nuxe products were a treat. As to the bedding, it was like sleeping in a cloud. For breakfast, two choices were available, but I opted for exploration and a croissant at a local boulangerie-patisserie instead. All in all, a very pleasant experience. I would stay there again in a heartbeat.
