Nice hotel, friendly staff, spectacular views but not much nightlife. The hotel has live music/disco at the weekends but nothing at all in the week. Gioiosa Marea has a few bars & restaurants but very quiet. The hotel is on a hill so you need a car really or get very fit. Breakfast is the same every day but there is loads of choice so limit your selections each day to get variety if that is what you want. A few minor niggles with the hotel: The food is OK but always runs out every night before more is put out. Seafood are those tiny shrimps you used to catch in rock pools as a child served shell on. Way to much effort to de-shell them for a matchstick sized tail. There are plenty of sunbeds around by the pool but the parasols have a design fault where they take off in anything over a 5mph breeze. It is a shame because they fit into heavy concrete bases which would keep them in place but it beyond the wit of Sicillians to make a fixing which would keep both parts together. The only other complaint is the large number of stupid pointless rules that the staff are determined to enforce. It sounds like we had a horrible time. We didn't. It was lovely. The sun setting into the Tyrrhenian sea most evenings was spectacular.
The hotel is located in an amazing place with a beautiful view 😊 sunsets are stunning and breathtaking 😊 All rooms have a view for the sea. Room was big and clean with a balcony and clean bathroom. The hotel is located on the hill and walking down to Gioiosa Marea takes about 10 minutes but walking up takes about 25 minutes. For us it was not a problem but for older people could be. But in the hotel reception you can order a bus to the town which hour you want. People who have not been in Italy should remember about siesta between 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. which makes the town almost empty during those hours. From the hotel it is impossible to walk to the hotel beach on foot because there is not a footpath on the main road. But there is a free bus to the beach and from the beach 6 times a day. Infinity pool is really nice and not crowded and each hour we could find a free deckchairs. Each place is created by people and this is a strong side of this hotel because the staff was very nice and friendly. (special thanks for a nice time during meals to Sebastiano and Francesco from Anna and Kaan 😊 ) Meals were various and delicious and each day we could find something different.
On top of my headline I would add great, friendly staff. PROS -- Million Dollar View CONS -- Supermarket quality breakfast, with powder scrambled eggs as the queen. Hello! We are in Italy, aren't we? -- Jamming elevators: German couple spent there locked ca. 40 minutes which was probably their top vacation experience. -- Paris Dakar sort of experience if you are to climb the hill with your Cinquecento on the gravel hotel road TIP -- As Gioiosa Marea is in the middle of nowhere:) it's reasonable to rent a car at the Catania airport with much more attractive prices vs. local ones. GENERALLY SPEAKING: SICILY IS THE PARADISE!
My wife and I had a vacation in Sicily. We booked an all-inclusive stay at the Avalon Sikani, the personnel was friendly, safe for the receptionist at the front, there was a language barrier with the rest. Had to pay extra for a little children bed, which isn’t a problem in itself but mostly included for free with other hotels nowadays. Rooms were clean, though upon closer inspection you could see tears in curtains, and a general ‘sweating the assets’ type of vibe. This place is not kid friendly, meaning that there is nothing to do for the children. The personnel is very friendly. Dinners started good, and degraded into mediocracy towards the end of our stay. It might have been because not many people were there. Breakfasts were bad, no variety and nothing that was particularly tasty. Lunches were a la carte and mostly decent but nothing to write home about. Again, the hotel is by mo means bad, it’s not good either. It’s just ok. Pool wasn’t heated, so lots of potential for improvement. Hope they read these reviews!
Positives:- very nice room overlooking the bay, room and complex clean, staff helpful, polite and understanding of both English and our attempts to speak English. Wifi hotspot available in most areas including our room. Pool area good, large infinity pool, nice bar area with selection of drinks and nibbles as well as a small choice of bar food. Complimentary shuttle bus to a nice beach with good restaurant ( lovely big pizzas ). Shuttle bus limited to 8 passengers...watch out for queue-jumpers! I am scoring the food as adequate on the basis of the group concensus. The breakfasts were o.k. but as with most Med. Countries they can put on a good continental breakfast but the bacon and egg was never hot (unless you got first choice on a fresh supply). My own opinion was that the little burners could not keep the water hot enough for long enough to keep the food pipng hot. Same goes for evening meals. If you like fish and sea food you will be fine, other alternatives were not to my taste. Did not like the label of "grilled meat" I want to know whether it is pork or beef or veal. The town and surrounding area was not touristy so you will find a Sicilian town in its natural state. Good coffee bars and restaurants in town, but you need a car to explore surrounding areas. Negatives:- the indoor bar by reception was never open. If you want an evening drink it is back to the pool bar even during a thunderstorm which we experienced. Do not understand why a more convivial atmosphere was not generated by using indoor facilities. Ignore signs to The Wine Shop; it doesnt exist. A pleasant stay, but I like piping hot food!
This hotel has the most delicious food! Especially pasta!!! When I go back to my country I'm gonna have to go to the gym every day to burn all these calories! :))) It's perfection I enjoy every bite!!
We stayed as a couple at that hotel in the end of june -from 25 to 02.07. And I wouuld say that our experince at that hotel was very satified. We have had a room also on the 4 th building upstairs but it was not a problem for us - it takes 5 minutes to go to the lobby bar or to the restaurant. The room - very big room, well furnished with a big balcony with table and chairs and of course with stunnig view! The room was cleaned every day and the girлs from housekeeping done it very carefully. The reastaurant - we had breakfast, lunch and dinner. The restaurant is a very huge, well furnished, with excellent service. The food was delicious - pasta, sea food, pork, lamb, chicken, vegetables, fruits, ice cream, sallads, pizza, cakes and etc. The hotel offered a variety of delicious food dishes. Also the wine was very good (the white and the red d'avolo). The reception - all the staff ot the reception speak english very well and they provide us an excellent service. You may choose an excursion from the reception to the islands or to Etna-Taormina or somewhere else. The swimming pool area - maybe the best area at the hotel with a big swimming pool with super view - highly recommended! The bar on the swimming pool was very good and every night after dinner we went there to drink cocttails and beer - very good sevice and coctails! The beach - the beach is a very big, and the hotel offers a shuttle to there. May be there must be 2 shuttle buses beacuse of the number of the people who wants to go. The water is very clean and is suitable for diving. It is a quite place and there are not many people. The beach is covered from little stones (not sand) for that reason I have had a suitable shoes. There are two restaurants on the beach that offer pizza and sea food and the prices were very good. Gioiosa Marea - very cozy and beautiful village that is near to Milazo, Tindari and Cheafalu. You may visit Palermo, Chefalu or Mesisina by train aslo. If we go again to Sicily we will choose again that hotel. Best wishes to all the staff of the hotel and to the dog Arthuro:), Rumen & Rusalena from Sofia, Bulgaria
We stayed in this hotel from 16th of July until 23rd with full board accommodation. We choose this hotel because of the advertised beautiful sea view and despite the beach is far away from the hotel there is a shuttle. Unfortunately the nightmare started immediately after we have received the room. To reach our room we needed to pass 4 buildings through elevators with no ventilation. My wife is pregnant so I started to think that this is not a good idea. When we opened the room we saw the "stunning" view - the elevator and the ceiling from the two buildings in from of us (see the attached photo). The room number was 4207. If you receive it ask for other one. We immediately asked for a new room, but the hotel declined to change it despite the pregnancy of my girlfriend. They told us that the hotel is full and in the same time a lot of people constantly checked-out they rooms. They asked us to pay 30 euro per night plus for a room in building 2, but there was a constant noise from the ventilation of the hotel and we declined this "offer". To reach the beach you need to wait a shuttle which is only 6 times per day. So when there is a lot of people to go on the beach there is always a stress if you will be able to get in or you need to wait another 30 minutes. Don't think that you will be able to get in even if you are first in the queue - this doesn't matter even if you are pregnant. When you want to go back from the beach to the hotel you need to wait on the sun - there is no shadow on the bus stop. The beach is very disappointing as well - rubble and a slippery rock inside. I heart my leg badly when I go for the first time and wasn't aware about this. There was also a lot of red jelly fishes in this beach. If you need to go to buy a water the supermarket is 1 km from the hotel but with 120 m elevation which is very difficult when you bring 6 bottles of water on 35 degrees. The good this is that the food was good, but not a lot of choice. The breakfast was always the same. I regret that instead of having good vacation I lose my time and money in this hotel. We will never come back in Sicily and this hotel for sure!
The service in the hotel and the restaurant was very good. We stayed full board. They served a variety of meat, fish and sea food every day. And of course delicious pasta and spaghetti :). Fresh vegetables and tasty wines. There was something for every taste. The rooms were cleaned every day. All rooms had a balcony with a stunning sea view. The only thing I see as a minus is the shuttle to the beach. There is only one bus for 8 people and you have to wait for the next bus if the first is already full. While waiting there is no place were to hide from the sun and it can get really hot.
This was our first European holiday together as a couple and we got a great deal that included car hire, 7 nights in this wonderful hotel and flights to and from Catania with a website called Going Luxury. Gioiosa Marea is perfectly situated on the coast, and Avalon Sikani has an almost birds-eye view of the entire town. Starting with the aesthetics, the hotel is beautiful - it's very European with its multi-coloured buildings, but is extremely modern both in the common areas and the hotel rooms. Our hotel room (2216) was in probably the best location that we could have hoped for, we had to take the 1st lift to level 4, cross the bridge, and then we were on the 2nd floor of the building to the far right. The views from the balcony were picturesque, and definitely postcard-worthy. Every morning it was a treat to wake up to a view so beautiful, and even better with the sunset. Our room was lovely inside too, very clean and comfortable, and the cleaning staff were very good with keeping on top of towels and bedding. Now onto the food, my fiancée is Coeliac (Gluten Free), so we made sure we checked with the travel agents and personally e-mailed the hotel to confirm they were on board and aware of this. On arrival, the receptionist was very helpful with checking us in and explaining where we were staying in the complex, and straight away mentioned about the dietary requirements that we had specified, which put our minds to rest. We had the half board option, so breakfast and evening meals were included. We cannot sing enough praises for the restaurant and waiting staff, especially Massimo and Francesco, 2 of the hardest working and most helpful people we met on our whole trip - they brought my fiancée GF bread every meal, GF biscuits at breakfast, and were very accommodating when we requested Gluten Free pasta with what they had on offer at the buffet. The food for myself was lovely, although seldom labelled, which just meant I had to try things to see what I liked ! The desserts were different every night, same with the evening buffet, a large variety to choose from with some staples such as salad and cooked meats. The swimming pool was definitely the selling point for us when booking this trip, and it is even more beautiful in person. It has incredible views of the Aoelian Islands and the Sicilian coastline to the west, and is an incredible sight at sunset too. There were plenty of sun beds and umbrellas, so we were never stuck, no matter what time of day we went down. The infinity pool also feeds 2 smaller, shallower pools below, designed for small children, and there are also extra beds and umbrellas there too. The pool bar is very handy, and if we were all inclusive, would have definitely been something we would have utilised more, but we still had a few drinks there in the day and evening. We would return to this hotel in a heartbeat, it's definitely not on the budget side, but you get what you pay for, and it's incredible !
