Mercure Hotel Schwerin Altstadt3.0 out of 5.0

First, the location is great, with walking distance to most sights and restaurants. The hotel itself boast small, basic rooms, which are not particularly clean. Parking is available a short walk from the hotel, at around 5 euros. Staff were reasonably friendly, but with varying levels of English comprehension. There are better choices in Schwerin, but for location it's hard to beat this one.
The hotel was very clean and spacious. The staff were friendly. The views from the roof are worth a trip up there. We were very comfortable here for one night and there were a lot more amenities here that we did not find in other hotels in this area.
I enjoy my stay at the hotel. The rooms were as expected. The atmosphere was nice. But i was disappointed with the breakfast setup was not inviting please try to improve on the appearance didnt look inviting my child didnt want anything
A short taxi ride from the train station through the delightful town soon brought me to the hotel. It was just around the corner from the famous Castle - excellent. The 2 young German ladies that checked me in spoke excellent English. I notice that several Tripadvisors have stated that the rooms were quite warm at this time of the year. I recall that I must agree with them. Having stayed at Mercure Hotels world wide I was really surprised to find that this one had no English TV! After tramping around all day I really love to relax and catch up on what the rest of the world was doing while I was having a great time. In this case there was the huge explosion in China - and I would have loved to find out "what the hell is going on!!". Had I realized this when I booked I most certainly would not have stayed here! If you are a Tourist Hotel - next to a world wide tourist attraction I believe these days, you actually have to cater for tourist's needs.
Our visit started well because we received a free upgrade (note that I have an Accor Favourite Guest Card (paying)). However when we got into the room (105) we smelled cigaret smoke. The backside of the room is located at what one first thinks is a balcony (there are 3 chairs and 1 small table for 2 rooms), but is actually a general fire escape, there is a stairs in front of the windowdoor. The explanation for the smokesmell came the next morning. The room (and neighbouring room) is just next to the breakfast room. Not only is the door to the fire escape open, but people come and stand or sit a few centimeters from your (open) window. Not only do they talk loudly but they smoke. To cut a long story short, when I complained about this the personnel made it clear that they support the smokers and not the non-smokers. We just left. With this attitude this hotel should not be part of Accor.
When arriving we were met by a very confused woman at reception that at first did nok make a very good first impression. Later she turned out to be very nice. But the staff in general seemed very stressed and it seemed as if the hotel where short of staff. You got this feeling through out the hotel. F.ex when finding dustballs under the bed. And when the bread got more and more stale during our 4-days stay. And the staff in the breakfastroom were almost nonexcistent. As if they had other chores to tend to. This meant that even though there were still 1 hour left of breakfasttime, the trays weren´t filled. The room was nothing to write positively home about. The bathroom was outdated and it was difficult to find space for our toothbrush and toiletries. Theres was coffee/teamaker and coffee and tea. Minibar but no aircondition. However it was nice that you where able to open the window completely. Thought the hotel was situated quietly right next to the pedestrianstreet there was a huge noise from cars to and from the hotel and the surrounding residency. We had booked a room with a double bed, but got a room with to beds on wheels pushed together. This we found out when the bed rolled away from the wall when one was sitting in the bed with the back towards the headboard when watching tv. The two chairs in the room were the kind of chairs teenagers have in their room. And the table in the photoes where missing, so you only had a desk. The problem with the bed was solved when climbing under the bed and turning the wheels the opposite way. This however meant that the bead rolled, when turning during sleep and you almost feel on the floor. When leaving the hotel we paid for our dog beside the roomcharge. The roomcharge itself was more expensive than stated in our booking forms and it was impossible to find out why. Not until later we found out that the hotel charged us an extra 5 %, which equals the hotel-tax hotel in some german cities are charged. In this case they made us pay the extra tax though our booking form told us no extra charges was made. Though the hotel was situated conveniently for our stay in Schwerin the cons don´t make us recommend this hotel.
Booked Mercure Schwerin Altstadt rather than Accor hotel on outskirts. Parked the car in nearby secure car park (5 Euros per day). Location of hotel meant that we could walk everywhere. Hotel and room very clean - quiet location and friendly staff.Town located in 'Lake District' of northern Germany - very picturesque. Did the bus tour (10.50 Euros - good but only in German). Found an excellent café within 50 metres of Mercure for breakfast - didn't book hotel breakfast. Brilliant Italian restaurant just over the road from the Mercure - pasta and pizzas very good value - only bottled beer available.
It was about a 12 minute walk from Schwerin Hbf to the Hotel Mercure. However it was conveniently situated for the centre of the old town with its shops and restaurants and not far from the castle, museum and lake. The room was clean and of average size and the bed was comfortable, though with awkward sized pillows. There were two chairs and a desk with minibar, a wardrobe and large tv. There was wi-fi but there did not seem to be any air conditioning. Good breakfast, staff friendly. This was an average tourist style hotel that provided a comfortable stay.
With the exception of a charming and helpful guy on reception who helped me out one evening when the bathroom light died. Service was reluctant and on occasions non existent. There was NO English TV, although CNN was shown on the plastic list. The hotel wifi was not strong. Half the time I was unable to stream or download anything. It was just about ok for email without attachments. All this I may have forgiven were it not for the workers who gathered in the morning smoking outside our window which was open as the weather was warm. Location is excellent. Beds were ok.
Efficient receptionist. Good room with a superb bed. Facilities for making tea and coffee plus minibar. Bathroom with shower and hairdryer. Shampoo provided. Have not had breakfast at the hotel, but in contrast to the hotel room it seems a little overprized
