What truly shook me was being in a secluded area, dressed in a suit and tie as an American traveler in Africa, and then having two other men repeatedly beg me to stay. In that moment, I did not feel like a guest. I felt vulnerable, isolated, and unsafe. There was no internet access, no reliable way to call for help, and even when Hotels.com tried to contact the property, no one answered. I never checked in. I never stayed. I left immediately because I genuinely feared for my safety. What should have been a place of rest turned into a terrifying situation that forced me into another four hour round trip just to get back to safety. After more than a decade of loyalty to Hotels.com, it is heartbreaking to think I could lose money over a place that made me feel endangered.
