Craythornes - a holiday let by Bloom Stays that sleeps 18 guests in 5 bedrooms
4/5 Good
Nice house in need of a bit of TLC
"It's easy to find online reviews where guests state that the photos of a particular holiday home don't do it justice. I would say, in the case of Craythornes, that the photos are doing a lot of proverbial heavy lifting. The photos are clearly professionally done but they must be from a few years ago as the condition of the house no longer matches up to what you see advertised. Don't get me wrong, it's a beautiful house (some parts dating back to around 1770) but it's in need of a bit of TLC. Some of the furniture is no longer there (for example the sofa in the kitchen has been replaced with a tatty brown leather one) and I never did find the piano or the dining room with the green seating. There are more rooms than you can shake a stick at but unfortunately the games room is in a separate outhouse quite a bit away from the main building (which isn't mentioned in the description). So if you want a game it does immediately break up the party a bit. And it's in a pretty bad shape. The lights didn't even work over the pool table so good luck trying to see the difference between the spots and stripes. Lots of small things in the house didn't work actually (one toilet was out of action, doors didn't shut or locks weren't working properly) so it gave the whole place an end-of-season feel. But this could be sorted if someone spent a good couple of weeks going round and fixing everything. There were also clothes in some of the cupboards and wardrobes and there's clearly some furry friends running amock in the loft (we found a dead one in the lounge on our arrival!) We were a mix of ages ranging from 13 to 82. If you have more senior people in your group I'd check with them regarding the accessibility. For example, the stairs can be tricky, there are uneven floors and the wooden floor in the en-suite is lethal when it gets wet. Grab handles in that shower wouldn't go a miss. But it's a listed building so you can't expect it to be fully modernised but it might be worth bearing in mind. On the positive side, the house still did its job, the owners are lovely and the location is great. Rod and Line fish and chip shop was some of the best we had eaten in a long time. In terms of whether i'd recommend it...we were only there for the weekend but I can imagine if you were staying for the week or longer then what I've mentioned might start to grate."
