We stayed for 5 nights in the hotel. Outside it looks magnificent, but inside we quickly started discovering various issues. Foremost, the beds are of very poor quality, we felt broken every morning.... The hotel promises a shuttle service to Funchal, but this shuttle drives only a few times a day and it can only transport around 15 persons for a hotel 100s of guests. To use it we had to book two days ahead. The hotel has a restaurant, but this is another disappointment. Average food, often not even prepared from fresh ingredients, but 25 euro per person excl. drinks (this price is definitely not in line with the price for dinner in the area). In short: nice outside, disappointing inside. Next time we will definitely book another place.
We enjoyed our stay here, booked with Jet2 Holidays. We chose half-board, and were happy with the food on offer -the usual hotel breakfast buffet catering for all tastes, also with eggs freshly fried and omelettes made to order. The evening buffet was varied and we found lots to our taste, though the grilled meats were rather tough, plenty of salads, seafood, cheeses etc on the cold buffet, and some lovely desserts. Evening drinks are not included in half-board and a bottle of wine is 13 euros. The room was spacious and very well maintained, with maid service and towel change each day, quite good toiletries and the bed quite comfortable. The air conditioning worked well, and the small balcony with table and 2 chairs was a pleasant place to sit. We were glad we had booked a room looking on to the sea and pool as the view from the back of the hotel was over other buildings, with the mountain behind. There is no extra charge for the room safe or wifi, which worked well. If you need to watch TV (?) there is little in English, but it does have a DVD player (maybe if you have children to entertain). We asked for a kettle when we arrived, and this was delivered quickly with a selection of teas, coffee and little milk cartons, which will be replenished if you ask at reception,and for which we were not charged, though it was itemised on the bill at checkout. Santa Cruz itself is only a 10 minute stroll either along the seafront from the gate by the pool or from the front of the hotel into the village.It has a small number of pleasant cafes/restaurants and a small supermarket which supplied us with beers to chill in the room mini fridge to enjoy on the balcony. Otherwise there is little in the way of entertainment, though this does not bother us. The beach is rocks, so don't expect sunbathing on sand! We made use of the hotel minibus for a day in Funchal (recommend booking 2 days before you want to go), and there are good local buses to visit other places. The crowning point with regard to service (which was always smiling and friendly from all the staff) came mid-week, when it was my husband's birthday. Mid-afternoon a tray was delivered with an ice bucket containing a bottle of sparkling wine and one of sparkling water, along with a dish of chocolate-dipped strawberries, courtesy of the management, who must have noted the date from his passport. What a beautiful touch! Thank you for a lovely week's stay.
We had not heard of the Vila Gale hotel group before but were sent here by Easyjet when our flight home was cancelled. Didn't know what to expect and were very pleasantly surprised by this hotel. Check in was a little chaotic due to passengers from several flights all arriving together but the reception staff were very patient and friendly. Since check in was not allowed until 2:00pm they suggested we go to the large buffet style restaurant for lunch and this was another nice surprise with a large selection of hot and cold food on offer. All our meals there were of a good standard and always plenty of variety to suit everyone. Public areas are bright and well kept. Our room was typical hotel but spacious with maid service every day and a small balcony we could sit out on. Other reviewers have listed all the amenities which are good so we would be happy to go there again or to another of the Vila Gale hotels as a paying guest!
This hotel is spotlessly clean inside and out. The staff are friendly and very helpful. Room serviced each day and bedding changed twice, towels most day. Lovely big outdoor infinity pool and smaller pool for the children. Decent size indoor pool with a jacuzzu and hot room in the same indoor area. Good gym. We stayed "all inclusive" and the food for all meals was plentyful and very varied, all laid out beautifully. Cocktails mixed to order before our evening meal included. We had a problem with our room safe but within ten minutes of the fault being reported the maintenance man was there to fit new batteries. Very quiet despite only being ten minutes from the airport. There is a courtesy bus for anyone wanting to visit Funchal, about a twenty minute ride. Can't fault this hotel at all and would happily visit again..
We had our return flight home cancelled due to bad weather and Easy jet allocated this hotel for 3 nights. We did not know what to expect and we were pleasantly surprised on arrival although the booking in was a bit chaotic. We could not expect the best rooms but what we got was more than adequate. The hotel has an indoor and outdoor pool, sauna and gym. The outdoor pool faces the sun and sea with more than enough loungers for this time of year. Another surprise for us was we were all inclusive...breakfast, lunch and dinner, with a glass of wine with lunch and dinner. It is a buffet restaurant, rather chaotic with a limited, but satisfactory choice of food. The hotel has contemporary furnishings in the public areas,no carpets, which made the dining room very noisy. The corridors and bedrooms were carpeted. Beds were firm, and there was no separate sheet under the duvet. The hotel is located in Santa Cruz a short distance from the airport. We could see take offs and landings but they did not disturb us unduly. Santa Cruz is a lovely village, nice to stroll round but a little rough at the edges....a rather uninviting shopping centre very run down, yet a rather nice local mercado. The hotel has a courtesy bus into Funchal, which is also accessible by public transport. This was more than satisfactory for a short break, but probably not for a fortnight holiday.
This hotel is very near to the airport, 5 mins by taxi and it is about 7 Euros. There is a free shuttle bus from the hotel to Funchal but you need to make a reservation. The first bus leaving at 9:30 AM. If you want to go quicker, there are many public buses to take. The bus stop is less than 2 mins walking from the hotel. The room is nice but the bed is a bit firm. The breakfast is excellent with many variety. There are many great restaurants near by. Over all, it is a great choice to stay if you do not mind commuting to Funchal.
A great hotel. Good and plentiful buffet food although a 9 pm dinner was late. Beds and bedroom were great and very comfortable. The hotel has a heated indoor pool, gym and Spa together with large outdoor pool. Great stay for an extra nights holiday. Thank you
This is a 4 star hotel with good facilities and extremely helpful and friendly staff. The food was buffet style and of a very good standard. We enjoyed our stay. One thing to note,that if you want to a buy a bottle of wine then it is 3 times the price in the bar than if you buy it at reception. If you do choose to purchase at reception it is chilled but you can’t drink it in the hotel communal areas. And finally, for those who like their shower, it is really powerful.
I was there for three day conference and had my lunch n dinner there. Must say very good food and services. It offers good view of the coast. Not far from the hotel I stayed in as they didn't have room to stay due to conference.
Just 1 night here courtesy of Easyjet when our flight to Bristol was delayed by a day.Could not fault the hotel, excellent accommodation, food & friendly helpful staff.Yes, it is very close to the airport, a bonus in our case!Located conveniently on the seafront & close to town centre.Would consider staying here if we ever visited Madeira agsin.
