Just returned from a week holiday with a group of dancers. The hotel is Lovely, rooms spacious and comfortable- ours faced the airport so we could lay on the bed and watch the planes landing and taking off. The airport is not busy though and the noise is not intrusive. It was also a lovely view of the bay from the balcony. Food was very good and plentiful, we were on all-inclusive so could have eaten all day if so inclined ( we didn't :-). staff were helpful and gladly organised trips, packed lunches and taxis. We hired a taxi & driver for a day (€140 between 6 of us). It was well worth it to visit some of the famous sights of Madeira such as the glass balcony and the volcanic pools which were such fun. Unfortunately it was cloudy at the very top of the island so we didn't get to see all of the impressive views. We took the bus into Funchal a couple of times - well worth a visit - and also did a day trip to a levada walk (not for those with vertigo!) Back to the hotel; there is a lovely SPA with indoor heated pool, massage jets, a sauna, Turkish bath and Jacuzzi. We didn't have any treatments at the spa as felt they were expensive at €70. The outdoor pool is good but cold. We also had the use of the dance hall for our dance classes and freestyle dancing on an evening which was very spacious. The only criticism I would have of the hotel is that the cocktails of the day were poor (very lurid chemically looking and tasting) and the coffee from the machine by the pool was vile; otherwise everything else was good.
Modern, comfortable, fun... you can't go wrong with Vila Galé hotel. It's a big hotel thought to satisfy the needs and pleasures of a tourist looking for a relaxing holiday. You don't need to move around too much, everything is there: a big outdoor swimming pool, an indoor one with a lovely jacuzzi next to it, plus sauna, gym, spa, bars, buffet and a la carte restaurants. Everything was so perfect for me! Also my room was cool: it was big, full equipped, decorated with style. Quality of sleep and cleaning were top level, too. The buffet restaurant offered a good selection and variety of food, both for breakfast and for dinner. I chose the half board formula, so I hadn't lunch there. A couple of times a week they do thematic evenings, I just loved the buffet of the Brazilian one, there was delicious meat and some tasty tropical additions. If you want to explore a little bit of Madeira, the bus stop is just 5 minutes away, whereas Santa Cruz village is really small, you can visit the village in a couple of hours. The airport is really close, you see the end of the runway from the swimming pool and planes taking arriving/departing (the noise doesn't bother). Both bus and taxi are cheap and take no more than 10 minutes.
We booked this hotel on an all inclusive basis through first choice holidays (tui) The hotel is very near the airport so thankfully the transfer is lovely and quick. Vila tale is a lovely hotel, the reception very smart with lots of comfy sofa's. We had rather a long wait to check in as there was only one receptionist and a dozen people to check in. The rooms are large and we'll equipped. No tea/coffee making facilities in the room! However there is tea and coffee making all day downstairs at the pool bar. We had a balcony with a sea view which was lovely and an added bonus of being able to see the end of the runway clearly from our room. However, the airplane noise isn't too intrusive. You soon get used to the planes passing close to the hotel and the last flights seem to be quite early. The only complaint I have about the room was the bed. When I first saw it I was overjoyed to see an enormous bed, however the mattress was so hard it felt like sleeping on concrete! Food in the hotel is plentiful with a fantastic selection of both hot and cold food. Infact you could eat and drink pretty much all day if you wanted!! Entertainment in the hotel is a bit hit and miss. Some acts very good and others not so good. But with nothing else nearby is was good to have something. The hotel runs a shuttle bus into Funchal. You book in advance (folder on reception desk) we had no trouble getting the days and times we wanted. We did several trips around the island and they were well worth doing. The island is beautiful with stunning scenery. All in all a good holiday choice. 😀
Visited as a couple In Sept. Travelled with Thomson on an all inclusive break for a week, first visit to Madeira. First impression not good, as on arrival the room was not ready. Reception staff all very matter of fact , go to the bar and wait until it is ready ! Waited about an hour and a half, not the best way to start. However the rooms are perfectly adequate , had a sea view. The Hotel is kept very clean , the staff are mostly very good and are happy to help. Food is OK , not bad by any means, but nothing special . Booked a meal in the a la carte section of the restaurant one night which was very good. The Hotel is about a 20min drive from Funchal , the Hotel runs a shuttle bus each day which is very good , you have to book the times at reception. Tip, book the bus as soon as you arrive , it fills up quickly. The Villa Gale is located in Santa Cruze , which is a small resort very close to the airport. It is very quite , with only a few bars , so not much outside the Hotel . Don't expect any nightlife unless you want to go to Funchal ,which is 25 euros each way by taxi ( that's why the shuttle bus is well used). Madeira is very nice , but the Hotel is located in the east of the island which is always windy , if you go further west towards Funchal it is more pleasant , as the wind drops. Went on 3 trips, Madeira is a beautiful place with some fantastic scenery, but it is very very hilly , so if you have any mobility issues please consider the geography. The Hotel clients are a mix of holiday makers and business users , so you don't get much atmosphere . It is very quite , most of the time. Biggest thing missing is that they don't have a pool bar. You have to go back inside the Hotel if you want a drink or snack. Drinks are good , and the snacks served are fine, so no problems . The Hotel has a really nice big outside pool, wondered why it was not over used, soon found out ,it is freezing cold ! Went with Thomsons, ok , but the reps did not seem to know much about the Hotel ( as seems to be the case in most resorts now) Asked at the welcome meeting ,why you don't get any tea or coffee making facilities in the room. Was told that the Hotel don't do this. Found out the day before we came home ,that all you have to do is ask at reception , and as if by magic you are given a tray complete with all you need , which the maids replace each day . Not good Thomson ! As the airport is very close to the Hotel you do get the aircraft passing close by, but not an issue really. Hotel entertainment is to put it politely , limited, so don't expect much . Would we return ?, nothing wrong with the Hotel, but I think the location is a bit too quite and very windy.
As you approach the front of the hotel like most places on the Island you will find steps although if you look to the left you will find a ramp that makes it easier to wheel your cases up. Check in is very efficient at getting you registered and on your way to your room. The reception itself is spacious with plenty of comfortable sofas. Of the reception is the access to a balcony which overlooks the pool and sea and a nice place to chill out. There are lifts as well as stairs to all the floors. The rooms themselves are accessed using the electronic keys which you are supplied with 2 which is very useful. You need to place the key in a slot by the door to activate the electricity. The wardrobes are by the door opposite the bathroom and offer a decent amount of storage this is also where you will find the safe. Inside the room there is a full-length mirror along side this is a long bench, the only criticism is the lack of draws. Along with bedside tables to the bed you also have a table and chairs all of this may make the rooms are cluttered but they feel very spacious. You also have access to the balcony which is also has a table and chairs. The bathroom comes with all the normal fittings with the addition of a bath with a shower over it giving you a choice. All of this is kept very clean The restaurant is a buffet style for all meals, breakfasts offer a good selection of food to satisfy most tastes. Lunch again offers a good variety food to have the lunch you want. Dinner is again buffet style offering again a good variety of food to suit all tastes although you may have to wait for a table at the busiest time but this is never long. Even when busy, food is replenished right up to the end of the service. They also had an al a carte restaurant which if you are all inclusive have 1 visit per stay which gives you a chance to be waited on and flows beautifully from start to finish with at no time feeling rushed. During the day there is also food available from the bar. The bars are open from around 10.00 am from the pool bar and then the main bar from 5.30pm where you can obtain all drinks. We found at times there was not quite enough staff to cope with demand particularly as some guest are not all inclusive and have to pay which can make the bar busier. You will find that all the staff in this area work incredibly hard. The hotel itself is raped around the pool area which then looks out to the sea. There are plenty of sunbeds but you may have to move around as the sun moves through the sky. The pool can be quite cool particularly early in the season but as there is an indoor pool in the spa this becomes a bonus along with the jacuzzi Turkish bath and sauna. There is also a gym and other treatments available. From the pool area, you also get the benefit of watching the planes coming into land at the airport which is less than half a mile away. Walking out from the pool area you go straight onto to the promenade right next to the pebbly beach and sea. You can walk to the local pool at one end to under the end of the airport at the other. Along the way, there are cafes restaurants and bars. It is also very child-friendly as it is well away from the roads. This is a unique place to stay because of its position and the town of Santa Cruz which is wonderful to walk around but above all what makes this place so special despite everything the staff work with a smile on their faces.
Great hotel, staff were amazing, especially Joana on reception who was fantastic, so friendly and welcoming and always on hand to help. Great location for the airport, mountains and water park. The perfect get away of you want a bit of space from the capital. Can't recommend enough.
Service wasn't brilliant on check in, staff a little abrupt, maybe that's the Portuguese? Nice clean hotel, hotel room of a nice standard. Food was pretty good also. Good location from the airport and within a small village which is nice to walk through with plenty of alternative restaurants. Pools were very cold did wonder why nobody was swimming in them. Loved Madeira would prob stay in a different hotel if visited the island again
Hotel it's self is very nice and very clean. Found the reception staff quite miserable when we ask for a room upgrade as we were initially at the side of the hotel looking out on to a derelict building. Food left a lot to be desired in my opinion. The evenings were long and uneventful very very limited entertainment the place felt as if it was out of season. Nothing really close by apart from a hand full of locals bars. Airport very close by....planes landing were the high light of this hotel. I wouldn't return to this hotel but would definately return to Funchal that was as expected lovely lively and vibrant.
Thank you all staff at v gale who were all polite and hard working as well as welcoming. You made our holiday just that little bit more. My only niggle is I detested the coffee at the hotel! Bathroom needs a soap dish! Hard bed! Hard sun loungers! Unheated outside pool! Still giving it a 5 star though. Only a few sun bed hoggers that vanished for quite a while! Otherwise no problem albeit packed like sardines! Preferred lovely gym side. Loved indoor pool hated cold outside pool so didnt bother with it. Loved cobbled beach and sea, also prom. Santa cruz small quite. Fab views from view point. Good food. Great courtesy bus to funchel did this 5 times! Got a bus back once via high winding roads ...breathing. loved the cable car and tobagging. Did monte plus tropical gardens ....awesome . Old town authentic plus artist road of painted doors. Red hop on bus brill got off at camera lobas just amazing place. Got public bus from near hotel to machico. ..easy and wonderful town. Each day we loved madeira more and more. Great no kids club for once ☺ and we met gorgeous baby alfie and lovely Rebecca. All the best to you both and your families. Lovely couples and a few families . Relaxing music playing . If you want noise avoid. We loved the different clientele. Rooms cleaned daily and toiletries replenished. Carpet in rooms ☺ homely touch . Hotel cleaned every where daily .spotless. My few negs are neither here nor there. We loved v gale and all staff. Thank you.
The hotel was cleaned to a very high standard and the staff very polite and helpful. The buffet food was plentiful and had a variety to suit all tastes. There was always fresh fruit, vegetables and salad. The steak was especially good. The buffet even managed to keep my fussy daughter happy and full throughout. The outside pool was cold enough to be uncomfortable and I only ventured in twice. The inside pool was warm and my daughter spent a lot of time in there. Again both the pool areas were kept spotless. We had a large family room which was very spacious and the beds very comfortable. The bathroom was well stocked with all toiletries and again house keeping kept the room very clean. The hotel is a fair journey by taxi to funchal town and I advice you to agree a fixed price if taking a taxi. The hotel do lay on a free shuttle bus service but this does get quite busy and booked up. All in all I would highly recommend this hotel it's quiet and peaceful and makes for a relaxing break. If you are more inclined to want a busy club type holiday this probably will not be the ideal environment for you.
