Amazing hotel, very welcoming, complementary drinks on arrival. Extremely helpful and friendly staff. Stylish bedroom, loved the little touches of chocolate on pillows every evening. Lovely spa area. Excellent breakfast. Helpful reception who arranged trips for us. Fab New Year’s Eve package and enjoyed the fireworks on the roof.

A very smart hotel, with friendly and helpful staff, who spoke good English. The hotel is well positioned in the centre of Funchal. The restaurant is definitely five star, with haute cuisine dishes. You’ll need deep pockets though!

The Vine is centrally situated in Funchal within walking distance of many good restaurants and attractions. When approaching the hotel which is situated above a shopping centre you get the impression that it is an office block. Indeed it could close on a Friday and open up again on Monday as offices without a problem. There are two unmanned counters either side of the shopping centre entrance. The lifts adjacent to each counter allow entrance to the lobby/reception only located on the 1st floor. Once checked in the room key card allows operation of the lifts to the upper floors. On the top floor there is a swimming pool, Jacuzzi, bar area and restaurant. There is also a bar near reception although during our stay it was never open (well almost, more later). The gym is located on the ground floor. The views from the roof terrace are really very good and would make a good viewing platform for the New Years fireworks display which is spectacular. The rooms we had were roomy and came with mini bars (complementary beers water and soft drinks but refills had to be paid for) safes, large beds, showers and adjacent toilet cubicles. The baths were in the bedrooms. I didn't care for the toilet arrangement as all that notionally separate's it and the shower from the main bedroom is a smoke glass screen and glass door with a gap up one side. Perhaps I'm old fashioned but I like to keep some of my bodily functions very private. Give me a proper wall and a door that closes properly every time. The sink unit in our junior suite was adequate, more for show than functional. The floor between the toilet and shower on one side and the open plan bath on the other was constructed with small pebbles! Very uncomfortable in bare feet. All our rooms had the same arrangement. The lights and blinds (but not the curtains) were all controlled by touch pads which took a bit of getting used to. The restaurant was excellent. We had dinner twice and breakfast most days. The wine list was very extensive and the service was good. The staff on the whole were very pleasant and with the occasional push very accommodating. We were a party of twelve and found on some evenings that the terrace bar which is open to the elements was rather cold. I asked if the bar near reception could be opened and was told that whilst people were using the terrace bar the lobby bar would not be opened. I pointed out that other than a stoic couple huddled at the bar there were twelve of us not happy with that arrangement. With this we were told that if we went down to the lobby bar someone would come and take our order. That was ok for one round. Having said all that we made use of both happy hours and generally dined out in Funchal. We chose to stay in the centre which was great. This hotel is modern and clean and I probably would stay again.

From the outside it looks like a very ordinary building. Probably because it is attached to apartments and a shopping centre nothing like the brutalist Pestana Casino Park hotel designed by Óscar Niemeyer. However, the interior makes up for this, especially the bedrooms which are minimalist, chic or even brutalist in design with single stark colour walls, no pictures or additional mirrors. The lack of any additional mirrors proved an issue for us. When we got to our room we wondered what it was all about but after about 24 hours we got used to it, didn’t particularly like it, just used to it. The floor by the sink and in the toilet area was covered in pebbles which was not particularly pleasant. The sink was peculiar in design and difficult to use. Regrettably we did feel overall this was design leading over functionality or practicality. Even the air conditioning thermostat right below the grille for the air supply was inappropriate located. The lighting control and temperature control was a bit of mystery. Our room whilst not having a balcony overlooked the atrium. Balcony rooms appeared to overlook a busy public area so I am not sure you would want one of them anyway. The separate shower and toilet areas had a 5mm gap around the darken glass door so you need to be on close terms with your room companion. Wash hand basin is separated as well. The location of the hotel is conveniently very central. Plenty of local restaurants and bars to try. The staff were very friendly. Turn down service offered. A very good cold buffet at breakfast. The hot breakfast towards the end of our stay the fried eggs became rubbery and the bacon like cardboard, inedible. Late in our stay we discovered there were made to order options but no one volunteered this information. Our tea/coffee supplies were not restocked after our second day. Our small complementary bar of soap was not replaced and had fallen to pieces at the end of our stay. The roof top pool and bar were pleasant. Having said all of the above we may well return due to its location if nothing else.

Very nice, new and modern hotel. The service and breakfast are good and we really enjoyed our stay in the hotel. Roof top, swimming pool and the view fantastic. Just a little note: the entrance is a bit complicated, maybe better to tell the guest in advance how to reach the hotel. ;-)

This hotel has a lot going for it. It's beautifully decorated, the rooms are comfortable, and the location is great. We were surprised that the hotel was attached to a mall but we actually found that fairly convenient at times. Room service was also excellent. The only 2 bad things I would say is that it's in a fairly noisy area. (grated it was around New Years Eve and people were partying) It's not the hotels fault that people outside were noisy but maybe they could install some double pane glass or something. It was hard to sleep at times because of the noise. The only other mention I would say is that the bartender upstairs is very slow. We would have hung out there more but the guy working the bar was not the guy for a busy weekend. He seemed like he was very single minded with his focus, somewhat ignoring people trying to get his attention. He was unable to handle the amount of people who were there and it didn't seem like that many. I grew up in New Orleans so I'm used to very good bartenders so maybe I'm biased but he either needed help or they need someone who can move faster and multi task a little. It was very easy to feel ignored by him. Other than thatIt's not a bad hotel. The noise is the only thing that might keep us from coming back.

This will probably be the easiest review I have done, The whole experience at the Vine Hotel was 2nd to none, From the minute you arrive you are made welcome, The rooms are spacious as well as Gorgeous, The Food and Service Fantastic, The staff well what can I say,, very courteous very informative it's like a big very hard working friendly family and they make you feel a part of it Charles and Ann could not have been any more helpful nothing was a problem, not that there was any hint of a problem, Many thanks to ALL the staff from the 360 bar, restaurants, housekeeping If you are Thinking about booking this wonderful establishment then don't, Just book it and Enjoy !!!! We spent the new year at the Vine, and enjoyed every minute. All the staff were very helpful , the food and wine excellent, and the location perfect, being only a few minutes from everywhere. The roof terrace with swimming pool and restaurant was the perfect place to watch the spectacular fireworks display, and a great place to chill out at any other time. We stayed in a corner suite 418 and can only praise the house keeping staff. The lighting is a little quirky, but you will soon figure it out. We are happy to recommend the Vine, and Funchal itself. Lots to see, and the locals clearly take a lot of pride in their town. Try everything, you wont be disapointed.

Absolutely stunning hotel from the décor, to the staff, level of service, food and of course the roof top bar and swimming pool!!! Amazing! Would definitely recommend it, the breakfast was fabulous and the restaurant truly fantastic. The waiters were very knowledgeable and would recommend wines to suit your taste and meal. Loved it!

Great location great breakfast had a view of the sea and the cruise ships that came in from our room. Not good for anyone with sight problems as hotel and rooms quite dark even the hallways and landings. Situated above a shopping centre and a bakery so ok for snacks lol. 10 min walk to the sea front. Great bar on the roof drinks average at 11 euros but happy hour twice daily. Fab gym but didnt use it. Rooftop pool and spa lovely but too cold and windy to use we had the week 15th to 22nd Dec.
