We are just about to leave this wonderful hotel. This is our third time and we came for New Year’s Eve and my birthday. New Year’s Eve was fantastic and the fireworks were so memorable. The hotel really pushes the boat out to give you a fantastic evening. The check in was swift and efficient and all the staff are a credit to the hotel. Our room was spacious and immaculately clean with the biggest comfiest bed ever. We had a full sea view and sun on the balcony all day. We had breakfast in the big buffet restaurant and it was great. My only tiny issue was you had to squeeze your own orange as the one in the machine is horrid. So I just had tomato juice and bought fresh orange from the local supermarket or in the bars. The food is of a high standard. We ate in the Med restaurant twice which is a fantastic experience both the food and the staff are a very high standard. We also ate in the Alfama which we enjoyed. I am gluten free and I was always catered for very well. Thankyou for the champagne in our room for my birthday. The portofino bar is a great place to relax and the drinks aren’t expensive especially during happy hour. The entertainment was quite enjoyable. But the best was Sangre Latino who filled the room and had the place buzzing. Not to be missed. The Spa with a lovely warm pool is great to relax especially if the weather is rainy. We really don’t want to leave but will be back for our 4th visit next year. The hotel are very loyal to their returning customers.

First ever stay at Porto Mare, but we had stayed at sister hotel, Eden Mar, previously. As such we were familiar with the facilities and services available. Check in was efficient and our allocated room was spacious, nicely furnished, well equipped and very clean. It over looked the garden and had a side sea view. The hotel was beautifully decorated for the Christmas celebrations and all public areas were cleaned to a high standard. We ate at the buffet which offered plenty of choice but, as I’ve mentioned on previous review, some of the selections could and should be much hotter. Such a shame. It was also very crowded at peak times. Evening entertainment is not to my taste but there are other options, like the Hole in One pub, fairly close by. A personal highlight was the New Years Eve celebration. The hotel organised an excellent buffet dinner, a coach trip to watch the fireworks, and a buffet on returning to the hotel. Well done and thank you to all involved. Overall we had an enjoyable stay. Staff are excellent and the hotel is very well maintained throughout. Just a shame they can’t seem to keep the buffet warm!

Booked this hotel thinking that we had stayed previously. On arrival transpired that previous hotel was Santa Maria (same group). We were however delighted with our error as this hotel surpassed our expectations and proved to be superior in location & facilities. Dining room could be crowded at main meal times but food was of good quality and plentiful. There is a lovely spa and indoor pool area. On checking in we were 'upgraded' to an apartment (an area called 'the Residence'). We were somewhat cautious as these are obviously timeshare apartments although we did not receive any sales pitches. Having previously owned timeshare we would not be interested in any way. Overall, a lovely hotel, beautiful gardens including an orchid area (delightful). Excellent New Year's eve Gala Dinner followed by an organised trip to a high vantage point to view the fantastic firework display.

We have been many times to Madeira. This is the first time at the Porto Mare. We will look no further in future. Setting and gardens are a delight. Rooms big and comfortable. Beautifully maintained. The staff so helpful. We stayed over Christmas and New Year. The Gala Dinners on both occasions were outstanding. Felt as though we had been really pampered.

I cannot fault this hotel. Rooms are spotless. Gardens immaculate. Staff are so helpful and friendly! The transformation for Hogmanay was unbelievable. Oh and the food was varied and suits everyone. Andrea (Portofino) always has a smile for everyone, very efficient and industrious. I think his name is Carlos? He always recognises you from one year to another. Another friendly staff member. I travel on my own and always feel very welcomed. Hope to see you all at the end of this year. Thank you all so much for making me so welcome!!

So much that we loved about this place. 10/10 for food and drink, really quite excellent. Lovely staff, anxious to please. Great location and even so they provide a courtesy bus several times a day into town. We took a suite which was a good idea and it was lovely. However it was at the end of the corridor which meant that the maid reached it last and so we never had the beds made up until late in the afternoon. This was disappointing. Rather mean to charge for a room safe.

We stayed at the Porto Mare hotel in June 2017 on a Jet 2 package holiday on a bed and breakfast basis. We could not fault the hotel. Our room was a standard double room and we could not have wished for any better. It was a very large room, spotlessly clean, with a nice bathroom. It was cleaned daily. The staff were very good. The breakfast was fantastic, with something for everyone. I ended up having 3 courses, finishing with a glass of sparkling wine! We only had one evening meal in the hotel but again, could not fault it. The gardens are beautiful and very well maintained. There is a large pool, with a snack bar, which sold very tasty snacks. The spa was very good too. I had an excellent pedicure. In our opinion the hotel us ideally situated. We walk a lot so the walk into Funchal and back did not bother us at all. There is a shuttle bus from the hotel but you have to book it. On an evening we just used the service bus; the bus stop is right outside the hotel and they run very frequently so it was ideal. All in all we had a fantastic holiday and have booked to go back again in June this year so I think that speaks for itself.

My wife and I returned for our third holiday at this excellent hotel, this time with Jet2 rather than Thomson holidays who do not appear to fly from Glasgow any more. It is like returning to an old friend, the usual warm welcome from much the same faces as before, their staff turnover or lack of it is testament to their obviously good staff relations. Last year we stayed at a different hotel, which whilst it was very good, did not have the extensive facilities that the Porto Mare has to offer hence the return this year. I appreciate that peoples preferences can be very different but The Porto Mare offers beautiful grounds with plenty of seating/loungers, quiet areas, table tennis, golf, tennis and there is an outside swimming pool and pool bar offering snacks and lunches all afternoon, there is also an indoor pool and spa with a fully equipped Gym. Despite having stayed here twice, apart from the extensive breakfast and poolside snacks, we had not eaten in the hotel. Is it getting older, lazier or just wanting to try the restaurants in the hotel for at least one meal. Well whatever it is we did and I would have no hesitation recommending eating in of an evening. The meal was outstanding, however we then went a stage further and ordered an evening meal from room service, my wife having a main of Tarragon Chicken and me the Fillet Steak followed by a chocolate pudding to die for. Is the no depths our decadence will not plumb, all washed down by a bottle of Red "Lab" wine from the local shop also superb and a steal at the price. We both agreed that we will repeat the room service next year when we are back, great value for money, great service and actually one of the cheapest and best meals of the holiday. In the evening the cocktail lounge is the place to be, they always have a live band which are all very acceptable, dancing and a great range of cocktails to choose from. Everything Gemma loves from a night out. Was everything fantastic, well there were a couple of minor issues, each of which is minor and did not detract from the holiday but worth noting: 1) The fresh orange juice that was previously abundant at breakfast has been replaced by "squeeze your own" using the worst orange squeezer I have ever encountered, not the same 2) the bath outlet was seized and whilst this was reported to reception, if it was addressed it was not done well, brute force from me prevailed. 3) there was a chip in the bath enamel. 4) the fan in the bath did not seem to work very well and finally 5) the shower screen did not seal which meant the floor was often wet. Did any of these detract from our stay, not a bit of it, they were all very minor but a bit more attention to detail and copious fresh orange juice and out holiday would have been perfect. We will be back and look forward to the same friendly welcome and service that we have become accustomed to. If you have not stayed at this hotel before do not consider my minor complaints to be something to be put off by. I am sure if we have asked again about the outfall issue and highlighted the others they would all have been addressed. We however we so chilled we simply didn't bother raising them again and if you enjoy a holiday and a hotel this much it merits its excellent rating every time.

Enjoyed the Porto Mare Hotel. Very relaxing environment and friendly staff compared to other hotels. Great food and lots of choice at the buffet breakfast of cooked and cold food, and in the evening there were lots of different dishes with show cooking. At buffet evening, especially when very warm, shorts were a popular modern and appropriate look for both women and men in line with the smart-casual code. We don't do pretentious!! The main bar was also casual or smart and the whole atmosphere was relaxing. This is a winning combination and must be why this hotel is so popular with repeat guests. The outside pool felt cold when getting in, but was nice when swimming. Rooms were clean, good quality and beds very comfortable. Bathrooms were good with plenty of shampoo etc. Wifi excellent throughout hotel. The Spa staff were fantastic. Relaxed, unpretentious, very friendly staff, great reception, great food, great accommodation, great facilities, what more is there to say. Unable to fault the Porto Mare.

I stayed on a half board basis the food was top quality and plenty to choose from. My room was very clean and spacious with a large balcony. The location was very good and central with a bus stop outside the hotel. The hotel staff are very friendly and helpful. The hotel is set in beautiful grounds with an amazing pool. I would defiantly recommend this hotel.
