Pestana Palms Ocean Aparthotel4.0 out of 5.0

Staying here at the moment in one of the tower rooms with a balcony overlooking the ocean. First day greeting and organization of any tours, trips or concerts is pretty good. Rooms are well equipped. There are meal deals and happy hours. The views from the balcony are fantastic with two great swimming pools. It is great to hear the ocean while in bed at night with the balcony doors open. A well stocked supermarket is 20 seconds across the road. Funchal is a good place to stay if you are a resort kind of person. The weather appears always to be good.
This hotel is in a lovely position with beautiful views. However it is down a steep road so would be difficult for anyone with walking difficulties. We only had one evening meal in the hotel because we found the evening meal disappointing
Me and my wife are actually staying in the hotel at the moment, what can I say, everything about the hotel is just excellent, the location (actually right next to the sea with fabulous views), the staff are really helpful and friendly, the breakfast is just first class, BUT the quality of the beds leaves a lot to be desired, the mattresses are worn out, they are lumpy and very soft, not the type of beds that you would expect from a 4 star hotel, both me and my wife are both suffering from back pain after only 2 nights
Any Pestana resort is good and this is no exception. Recent improvements to the sea front make it even better and gives plenty of space to promenade. Really handy for Funchal centre by foot or bus.Funchal Itself is much improved following storm damage in recent years.
Very friendly and efficient Hotel, lovely rooms All with balconies and views. Hotel situated right on the sea and you can dive into the sea for a swim. There is also a dive club with instructors. Fabulous Afternoon Tea made with herbs from the hotel garden, home made scones and cakes. Happy two hours where Cocktails are half price. Quiet hotel with great staff.
I stayed at this hotel with my husband and daughter. The hotel is perfect for us. My husband needed WiFi for his work. Always WiFi connection is very good. My daughter loves swimming. The pool is very clean and easy access from our room. All staff are so kind! When we went to the bar, my daughter couldn’t decide what she ordered. The waiter recommended her very delicious non-alcohol cocktail. She loved it! The view from our room was wonderful! We saw some dolphins from the balcony. We definitely will be back again!
We have stayed at several Pestana resorts on the island and the Palms rates very highly in comparison. although a bit older than some and in need of some updating of furnishing it is a lovely resort. the gardens are pretty and the staff excellent. Our only complaint is the policy of 1 year in 4 which limits when we can return again!
For a 4 star hotel we were disappointed with the lack of breakfast choice. All staff were a credit to the hotel (apart for one miserable barman). It seemed that there was a sickness bug present during our stay, My wife became ill on our third night of our stay but thankfully recovered after 24 hours, We could also hear our next door neighbour retching all night during our second night which was alarming to say the least. Views from our balcony were spectacular. Walking involved hill climbing so would not be pleasant for those who have walking difficulties unfortunately the weather during our stay was even colder than the UK with most days been overcast but that is not the fault of the hotel, if we were to visit again we would use the same hotel but probably later in the year.
A lovely resort with wonderful views over the ocean. The staff are helpful and friendly. The room was spacious and well equipped. Our only criticism was the bed felt a bit lumpy and was not as comfortable as we are used to. This is a well positioned resort away from the road ,but with a supermarket very close by and plenty of restaurants.
We visited Pestana Palms having swapped our week's timeshare at Loch Rannoch Highland Club. We won't be swapping next year! The Pestana Palms is well situated on a cliff-top about a 25 minute walk from Funchal centre. We had booked a studio apartment because that was all that was available. The apartment was basically a hotel room with a fridge, sink, 2-ring electric hob and a microwave added. On the upside there was a superb sea view, albeit slightly overlooked by neighbouring apartments on the concave curve of the building, but we were particularly surprised by the relatively poor quality of the furnishings and equipment compared to our Loch Rannoch lodge. Apart from the two main buildings of the resort there is a "clubhouse" housing reception, a restaurant, bar, and owner relations office as well as three lounges and a games room. This wasn't heavily used although it appeared to be open to the public as well as residents. By way of illustration we were able to watch the Spanish F1 Grand Prix on our own in the TV lounge. Perhaps one of the reasons it wasn't very busy was the high bar prices which only matched prices elsewhere during the daily "happy hour" from 1700 to 1900. We also ate in the restaurant which was good but not remarkable. Occasional entertainment in the bar was pleasant and confined to the clubhouse. No disco beats in the bedrooms! Staff were not particularly helpful apart from one individual in the pool bar who was exceptionally pleasant and hard-working. We were not impressed by the bar staff who ignored my wife's request for a replacement cocktail after she was served a highly potent pina colada. The other aspect we found unhelpful was the lack of car parking and off-hand directions to the neighbouring street parking. This wasn't entirely the staff's fault in that there was very little information about the limited car parking given at the time of booking but when you arrive at 2200 with luggage to unload (yourself - no porterage) and are told you have to park across the street and move before 0800 to avoid parking charges you don't feel welcomed. Could do much better. Elsewhere in the resort there's an outdoor pool (cold, but plenty of sun beds), spa (wife reports this was pleasant) and dive centre (good staff and equipment, good house reef). There's also direct access to the sea via steps if you fancy some ocean swimming. Our feelings about the Pestana Palms improved a bit during our stay but we'd rather have stayed at Loch Rannoch.
