We stayed at the Pestana Casino Park Hotel from 29th December - 1st January. Check in was very straightforward and the member of staff who served us was extremely kind and helpful. We had booked a family room as our daughter and granddaughter were travelling with us. The family room is actually two twin rooms with a connecting door which was ideal. The rooms were clean and ample space for us. The bathrooms were clean but the towels are a bit thin but were fine. We had lunch at the poolside bar. Food was really nice and a reasonable price. There was a good choice of fresh fruit, breads, cakes and cooked items for breakfast, The omelettes were excellent. It was interesting to watch the hawk flying around outside during the breakfast period. We had booked dinner at a restaurant in Funchal for New Years Eve but came back to the hotel about 11.30pm in time to watch the outstanding firework display from the hotel gardens. We were lucky in that the spot we chose overlooked the cruise ships so could hear all the ships sirens sound at midnight. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would have no qualms about staying at this hotel again.
We spent another New year at this excellent hotel. The hotel is in a wonderfull situation with amazing views and easy access to Funchal centre .Even though the hotel was full the staff gave outstanding customer care and nothing was too much trouble. The gardens and facilities were all kept to a very high standard and the food was very good. This hotel is excellent value for money and we are already booking for next NEWYEAR.!!!A big thankyou to everyone
Beautiful hotel near the city centre of Funchal. Just 300 meters from the main street and the boulevard. Kind staff, clean room and very good breakfast! Indoor and outdoorpool are also great. To cold te swim outside, but the jacuzzi, steamroom and sauna were great! Only in the weekend very loud people outside. But it’s one or the other. You can’t be near the centre and have a calm and quite place. Overal good stay, would recommand it!
Excellent location just above the harbour, so you can view the city, Cruse liners and best of all the excellent fireworks display on NYE. Ask for a room facing the bay, and if you can, book a suite. The indoor pool is excellent, but no permanent or visible staff, and unsupervised kids playing, they were just being kids, but not what you want if you want to relax. The sauna and steam are ok, but could be much better. The beds are not comfortable and the pillows are terrible. I asked for different pillows, but no! - even the smallest boutique hotels have different pillows.!!?? The furniture and fittings are so old that they are now retro fashionable and fun.. you can imagine Sean Connery as 007 next door! As the hotel is big, it’s obvious that breakfast is going to be a busy time. People were bumping into each other in a small area of a massive room! Which didn’t make sense. The location and architecture make this a special place to stay at a reasonable cost. Recommendations to make the hotel 5 star: Add mattress toppers; change pillows and give choices; add a club type breakfast at a supplement, with waiter service in the ground floor restaurant area; have specific times for indoor pool use by children; better bath towels; and most importantly please serve good cafe!
This hotel is a complete mixed bag. The communal areas are impressive, the breakfast is nice, the pool area and bar have a beautiful view, the spa is another nice hotel amenity... but- and it is these ‘buts’ that would put me off ever returning. Our room smelt of smoke and the air conditioning didn’t work. When I highlighted this to the reception I was told someone would look at it- 2 hours later no came so I went down and asked again. 45minutes later the house keeper arrived. She said she couldn’t smell smoke because she had a cold and when I told her I was concerned the air conditioning was clearly struggling to work so this may be a fire hazard her response was it’s probably someone smoking on the balcony- quite flippant considering the rooms clearly say no smoking. It’s only when I showed her the air conditioning control was hanging off the wall she sent someone else to look at it and replace it. This made absolutely no difference to the smell or effectiveness of the air con. My requests to move rooms fell on deaf ears and at times I felt the reception staff were rude. I was ignored and other customers served in front of me with no explanation why, when we checked in we paid for our room and were told if we wanted a receipt or a welcome pack we’d have to come back because of a printing issue, when we checked out we were simply told ‘that’s it’ not even at very minimum was an enquiry about our stay was made. I would have thought a 5 star resort would aim to take more care of their customers. Overall, I was just disappointed.
We were placed in a room overlooking the renovations of the Pestana Apartments, the noise was bearable, the water out of the bath tap was dirty brown the rooms are dated and tired. The breakfast was okay but the new coffee machines were not nice, never in a supposedly 5 star hotel have we encountered poor quality in coffee. The hotel outside pool was freezing cold that it was unbearable to swim in, even though the book in the hotel room says it is heated of which we took a photo of this information. Made the issues aware to management and nothing will change as they do not see there is a problem.. Shame as this could be a really nice hotel, plenty more hotels in Funchal for the future to choose from.
The room was spacious and bright. The staff was extremely pleasant and really friendly. Breakfasts are included and the food is great with a variety of exotic fruits. This hotel is within a short walk to downtown, the farmers market, the boutiques, restaurants, handicrafts, the park and much more. The view from the balcony over the ocean and the cruise liners is spectacular as is the view of the mountains and houses that pop up all throughout the mountainside. There was however one circumstance that I need to address: when you are outside on the grounds surrounding the pool, there is a most unpleasant smell that I couldn't figure out if it was a cesspool smell or fumes from the exaust of the cruise ships. I'm inclined toward the sceptic tank smell which was also present in other parts of the city. I'd like to add a detail about the room. There is no outlet in the bathroom for your hairdryer. The hotel provides a regular hairdryer but if you want to use a brush dryer or a rotating brush you need to plug it on a wall, and there is no mirror close to where the outlet is. Not a big deal, I'm just mentioning so you can be aware.. All in all, I still give it five stars. And th e bit about the smell, I mention it because there may be something that the management can do about it. U
Good stuff first: the location is close to the town centre, and the hotel was designed by by the same architect who designed Brasilia, hence the public spaces are fantastic. Staff were friendly and helpful. So, now for the not good stuff. I hope you are sitting down!. All my issues below have been raised by previous reviewers, so perhaps the manager could spend time rectifying these problems rather than continuously apologising... 1. Our twin room was scruffy, poorly laid out and small, and there was only room for a single chair inside. 2. The"Mountain view" rooms on the North side of the hotel face the junction of a main road and an access road for the quay. Poor double glazing means that you'll hear vehicles accelerate away from the traffic lights 24 hours a day. 3. The gym is just a handful of running machines and dumbbells up to 9kg only. Didn't even have a cable station. 4. Breakfast buffet was ok, but coffee was awful instant rubbish from a machine, presumably to save the hotel a few pennies. 5. Towels were threadbare. More penny pinching. 6. The outside pool is unheated so didn't see a single person use it all week we stayed in December. I've stayed in plenty of four star places better than this, and I'm very suspicious of how it managed to be awarded five stars. They seem to permanently offer rooms at discount rate via aggregator sites but even the discounted rates are more than the rooms are worth. The fact that they ask you to pay for the whole stay when you check in says it all, clearly they do not want you to cancel and move elsewhere after the first night.
We visited the hotel with my 79 year old mother for 3 days. This is mine and my wife's 4th stay and we love the hotel alot. We couldn't believe it was my mother s first stay in a 5 star hotel! She was impressed with the hotels location, it's architecture and the fantastic gardens and pool . The service as ever was superb , if you're visiting Madeira you should seriously consider Casino Park.
This was our 8th visit to this hotel and it will not be our last. Xmas is magical in Madeira as it is in the hotel. We were on B&B as usual because we like to sample the restaurants in Funchal. However Xmas eve the hotel gave us a complimentary gala dinner which was superb. You cannot fault this hotel, it is a perfect position for the town and at Xmas adds extras such as the childrens choir evening which make Xmas. Breakfast is brilliant, an amazing selection of food and sparkling wine ! ALL the staff are friendly, helpful and hard working. The little things make hotel stand out such as chocolate on bed when beds are turned down in the evening. We shall certainly return.
