Stayed here with my partner and two adult children it was a special occasion for us as a family to spend time together. On arriving at the hotel Marco was so helpful and kind. Thank you for the bottle of wine what a lovely thought. Also our room was beautiful with sea view on the 5th floor. The second room was side sea view which suited the two children fine. Apart from this I would not give this hotel a five star I think the location is fantastic with lots of restaurants etc close by but the actual pool bar was certainly not 5 star and the public areas could do with a bit of tlc to get my vote as a 5 star, having said that this is not Dubai or London and the standard will not be the same. We did enjoy our stay though and had a wonderful week enjoying the sights on the island of Madeira

This is a lovely hotel, with lovely rooms and on the whole lovely staff. It is not what you would expect from a 5 star hotel and here is the reason why. The restaurant and the food. Breakfast is alright but the choice is really rather limited. Including one toaster for the entire hotel. They may agree but when I've stayed in other 5 stars the choice has been much wider. Then we have the evening meal. The restaurant has absolutely no atmosphere at all. There is no buzz. Now for the food. Dreadful for a 5 star. Selection is very poor and what there is takes ages to be restocked if people are eating that particular food. This verges on 3 star standards which is disappointing to say the least. We were there two evenings as a group of 4. At the end of the first one as my wife had just paid the drinks bill the girl at the till shouted across the floor to my daughter and I. "Oi, have you paid the bill?" Across the floor, as if we were attempting to do a runner. That's certainly never happened to me before in any hotel. Then we went to the Madeira evening which we were told was the BBQ evening. We were a group of 4 and two of us left having eaten nothing at all it was so bad. Yes we left having eaten nothing. Obviously chickens only come as drumsticks in Madeira because the rest of the chicken had gone missing. It was no where to be seen. The beef was just big chunks of half cooked meat and some of it was frankly still moo-ing it was so rare. At least this time we weren't shouted at like common criminals. Oh and one last thing. There was not any ice cream for pudding. At the "proper" 5 stars I've stayed at previously a selection of Ice Creams was the most popular dessert. So whilst I thought the hotel was good and all the other staff really good the restaurant takes this place from a 5 to 3 star very quickly. I gave this rating because management really need to sit up and take notice and not reply with a barrage of excuses. I am unlikely to be back to Madeira in the short term but I wouldn't return to this hotel because of the restaurant. But to those considering it I would take serious notice or ensure you are eating out all of the time. Shame because otherwise the hotel was great.

Pleasantly surprised with the standard of this hotel. We booked a standard room which was very good, could have been an excellent, but the shower over the bath arrangement wasn't good as it was slippy. Breakfasts were what you would expect in this type of hotel, plenty of choice and very good. Enjoying a few drinks at the bar early and late and the entertainment was always good. There was plenty of seats outside in this area. My only grip is with the pool area. Too many people putting towels on sunbeds and not using them and smoking, surely this needs to be restricted to a small area away from the majority of guests who do not smoke, but have to suffer. Overall a very good hotel with nice staff, just a little far from Funchal centre, but a still walkable.

We have stayed at several five star hotels in Europe recently and have to say that this doesn't match those, and we would not rate this as five star. For example there was no evening housekeeping service or 'treats' experienced as at other hotels, reception help was very varied depending who was behind the desk, the bathroom towels were thin and scratchy, in places the hotel looked dated and in need of repair etc. etc. On a positive note the hotel is in an excellent location - we found many great restaurants and cafes locally. To be honest this is just as well as we ate in the hotel the first evening as we were later than anticipated arriving and hungry - this was a buffet, which was not great and very expensive. It turned out to be the most expensive meal we had whilst in Funchal and was no where near the best! Breakfast too is buffet style which in the main was great, although the fresh fruit often left something to be desired - sometimes not ripe, sometimes over ripe and sometimes totally devoid of flavour! We didn't use the outdoor pool as none of us are sunbathers but it seemed very crowded. We did however use the indoor pool, and found that most of the time we were in there we had the pool to ourselves! We have no idea how this hotel compares with others in Funchal - we would stay again but would look around first.

We arrived in the hotel very late, around midninght and the first really nice surprise was that in the room there was some food waiting for us. The room is nicely furnitured, with a balcony and the bed is really big and comfortable. The food is really nice and there is a lot of different types of food both for breakfast and for dinner. They have a great inner swimming pool with jacuzzi and outdoor swimming pool as well. The staff is friendly and helpfull.

Stayed at this hotel for 7 nights and we were very impressed with the quality of accommodation. Pay a little extra for seaview or side seaview on the west side. the east side seemed to overlook another building. The hotel has a great location with a very good bus service to centre of Funchal. We only ate breakfast in the hotel which was fine - we mainly ate at the great selection of restaurants within walking distance which were very reasonably priced. The outdoor swimming pool is a bit on the small side and we found it difficult to get a lounger unless we put out our towels early in the morning which everyone seemed to do - a bit annoying and shouldn't be allowed to happen . The music in the entrance hall in the evening was very good - just not very well supported by guests which was a shame. Would recommend this hotel for anyone going to Madeira.

Had a round of drinks as we were staying at another hotel and saw this hotel and wanted to check it out, - nice drinks, and good service - live music. Had a walk around and it seems very very nice so we would pop in again and even stay here.

Stayed here during July 2017. Paid for a sea view "upgrade", and had full view of pool and sea. This was well worth the extra, with little noise heard from the pool side bar at night. Overall experience great, all staff very friendly and helpful. Room cleaned every day to high standard. On the minus side, and this is relative to other 5* hotels I have stayed in... 1. Main buffet restaurant breakfast was great, dinner less so, poor main course choices, and very expensive. 2. Bar prices at least twice those nearby to hotel, however drinks promotions some nights helped offset this. 3. Room needed a freshen up, paint on walls very marked. 4. Not enough sun beds by pool as hotel was full, but staff helped find extra when approached. Many couples, with families, could not find room. Small issues which did not detract from a great experience at the Melia, I would recommend this hotel highly.

Certainly one of the best hotels in Madeira. It's very well located in the most touristic spot in Madeira. The hotel is very good and the rooms are quite big and the comfortable beds allow for a great night of sleep. The breakfast has a wide variety to choose from with a lovely view over the swimming pool and sea.

It is a very nice hotel with incredibly friendly and helpful staff. I do however feel the 5* is now generous after staying in nicer 4 & 5* hotels in the past. The hotel now feels a little dated but the staff do make up for this. Little treats like chocolates with turn down service and waiter service make the hotel enjoyable. The hotel is very clean and the rooms are very nice. A mini bar fridge, free safety deposit box and a beautiful bathroom. No complaints about the room. Aircon is free and controlled by a thermostatic unit rather than remote so you never really know the temperature. Hotel has an outstanding indoor pool and a free gym. The spa is extra as expected. Food is buffet style and is mostly good quality and plenty of it. Excellent service and no issues with other guests in dining room (I've seen some cattle markets elsewhere!) My only concern which I feel a 4 or 5* establishment should address is cleanliness of pool. The outside swimming pool is mouldy (grout & a lot!), dirty and missing tiles. The baby pool which we used only on a few occasions was dirty and poor quality. This really needs updating now. No problem with getting a sun lounger at anytime and free pool towels which can be changed at anytime is excellent! I would come back no problem!
