I've been coming to this hotel on and off for thirteen years, well since it was built as I bought a one week time share here from the planning stage. I banked a week and was here in April with my two eldest grand children, and my friend Lin, now back for my own week with my friend Eleanor. I've never thought about reviewing it before, but it's a beautiful contemporary hotel, set with a lovely garden, pools and spa. The entertainment is basic in the evenings, but the spa and gym are good, there's tai chi, Aquarobics, spa treatments during the day. The restaurants are good, there are meal deals, buffet and a la carte. However as you leave the hotel by the main entrance their are a row of small restaurants, I've tried most of them. The nearest is Real Canoa and it's excellent value and has live music most nights. The hotel has a curtesy bus into Funchal every day, the last bus goung at 18.05 and last back to the hotel is 18.30 from town. However there is a two hour gap between 12.30-15.30, so often there is no room on the return journey at 15.30 if your not at the front of the queue. Where you get off from the curtesy transport, it's an easy walk into the town, ere are Tuk Tuks, classic cars and all manner of other quirky rides if you don't want to walk. It's also where the Ronaldo Museum is, 5 euros well spent. You think it's small, but you go down stairs and it's amazing. You can also take a snap outside with a bronze statue of the man himself. I prefer the old town once in Funchal, with lots of small restaurants, that serve good food and value for money. If you've been to them more than once you are welcomed like long lost family. There's are many trips to choose from all over the island, but a ride up on the cable car to monte us a must. If you fancy a good show, there the theatre, the casino, but I'd choose The Ritz with Sian Phillips and you won't be disappointed. If you want to have high tea, then it's Reeds, but it will set you back abit, but the views are spectacular. If you like a lively venue, then look no further than The Hole in One pub, where you can sit in the themed garden, dance on the tiny dance floor to Latin American music, you won't be disappointed. Your spoilt for choice when it comes to eateries on the island. So expect your waist line to expand, or go on the levada walks and walk whenever you can. There's lots of water sports and you can venture out on a cat dolphin watching, snorkelling or the reproduction of The Santa Maria, there's even a real parrot onboard. Try the honey cake, the real Madeira cake, with Madeira wine. Enjoy the beautiful flowers wherever you look, they don't call the island the hanging basket if Europe for nothing. Go to Nuns valley and to see Cristo Rei, a smaller version of Chrust looking out to see like in Brazil. Enjoy yourselves x

This was our first time to Madeira, we were not disappointed. The hotel was very pleasant, no actual complaints but a few points i would like to comment on. The room was kept spotless however the pillows always smelt fusty. As my husband and i are great Steak lovers we decided to book the "Steak cooked on the Stone" meal one evening at the hotel. This can only be described as a disappointment. The steak was actually so hot it was almost too hot to eat. In actual fact it just kept cooking and cooking until it was overcooked and tasteless.

This was our first foreign holiday in 3 years, booked in celebration of our 40th wedding anniversary so we were hoping for something special. On arrival we were not disappointed, seeing just what a lovely hotel this is and enjoying a complimentary drink in the pool bar while our room was made ready. Unfortunately we were allocated what in some ways was probably the worst room in the hotel. Although spotlessly clean and spacious inside, we never once sat on the balcony which was at the same level as the unkempt garden at the side of the hotel and had a view only of the service entrance and the wall of the next door property. If booking, try to avoid room 1058!!! We are not the complaining types, but my wife politely enquired if we could upgrade to be told that all other rooms were full. On a positive note this really is a beautiful place with huge gardens, massive pools and more than enough sunbeds. All public areas were very clean, the breakfasts great and staff friendly. It is in a superb location with the promenade right at the end of the garden and with restaurants and shopping just a short walk away. We would thoroughly recommend this hotel for a quiet, peaceful and relaxing time, but please make sure you book a room with a view!!

This was our first visit to the Pestana Grand and had booked for the location and sea view. It was very peaceful and relaxing with beautiful gardens to walk around. Breakfast was good and all the staff were pleasant and helpful. Wi Fi in the room was good. We enjoyed the spa but were disappointed to find that the sauna and steam room were closed from 1130 to 1630. This was rather inconvenient and unusual. The room was large but looked in need of refurbishment, with a stained threadbare carpet and a well worn stained sofa. For a 5 star hotel the quality of the towels in the room was awful. They were hard and threadbare and one even had holes in it. I note that previous reviews from guests have mentioned the state of the towels but their comments seem to have fallen on deaf ears. This seems to be a common failing with Pestana as we experienced the same standard of towels at the Pestana Carlton last year. Come on Pestana, I'm sure you can afford to provide decent towels!! 2 star towels don't belong in 5 star hotels.

This is the fifth year that we have stayed at the Pestana Grand. It doesn't change very much, thankfully, because this is an excellent hotel although it is beginning to look a little tired in places. The rooms are very spacious and comfortable. We did notice the carpets have disappeared and the floor back to wooden. Sea view rooms are definitely worth the extra cost. Breakfast in the restaurant is wonderful, everything you could possibly think of is available. We did not find evening dinner menus particularly attractive - we did not come to Madeira to eat Moroccan or Italian food. The staff are very pleasant all round and most helpful. Last few years a bottle of Madeira and a honey cake were left in the room as we were frequent visitors. Not so this year, shame as this was a nice touch greatly appreciated. Having looked at a number of other hotels we will still return here. Its position is lovely and there are many excellent restaurants nearby.

The Pestana Grand is just what I have come to expect from this particular chain of hotels. Good facilities, well tended gardens nice staff. I did have a couple of negative points that were reported at the desk so I hope they have taken them on board. I would have liked a little map of the hotel and where to find everything as the signage is discreet! Also I agreed with Kirsty B;- my pillowcases did smell damp, I requested to have them changed to newly pressed ones and they were still the same but it maybe because the pillows are filled with small cubes of foam which I found unpleasant although my Husband thought I was imagining things. We did have a problem with a leaking bathroom sink but no sooner was it reported a team member was there to repair it! The rooms are a little on the dated side but it was very acceptable. Comfortable bed, large flat screen TV (although we did not watch it) a nice size balcony with superior furnishings. The safe was a little difficult to get to know as the keys were made of rubber and you had to be really accurate when pressing or it would not work. I found the room to be very well equipped, a bath with a decent shower overhead. The location of the hotel will suit some and not others as it is really at the very end of Funchal town. I would say that if you are looking for a quiet area to relax in with a lovely view and do not mind driving, walking or taking public transport then this is a good option but if you want something close to the old town then go elsewhere.

This was our first trip to Madeira and love the Pestana Grand. A most amazing hotel. Well managed, spotless throughout, well trained staff who were always friendly and wanting to help. Our room was on 3rd floor with fabulous views of gardens, sea, and pools. Our bathroom was well equipped with full size bath, basin, toilet, bidet and separate walk-in shower. We were on bed and brkfast basis and found several excellent restaurants within a minutes walk on a level walk opposite the front of the hotel. The exterior of the hotel is a very unusual design which makes a change from the usual block effect. The pool area is exceptionally beautiful with 3 pools. We have stayed in numerous 5* hotels which are left well behind when compared to Pestana Grand. In conclusion as far as we are concerned this hotel should be 6*. Can't wait to return.

It's a nice enough hotel which is a bus ride away from city centre or 45 min walk. It's got lovely views from the pool and if you have a view to the front. The breakfast is amazing but the rest of the meals are very expensive we didn't once choose to eat in the hotel. Drinks were expensive if it was not happy hour. The rooms were spacious with a tv a safe and a fridge (which didn't really work well) but the hairdryer is not a hairdryer take your own. The sheets / bedding didn't smell fresh didn't complain as figured the next lot would be the same. Silly things like the bathroom bin didn't have a lid or bin bag so not very sanitary. Pool area is lovely, gardens really well kept and the staff friendly enough. There is a hotel bus that takes you to town and back at certain times if there is room on it It certainly wasn't disappointing but it's not a 5 star

After initially being disappointed with our room allocation (we were upgraded to a suite but rooms looked dated and tired and had maintenance issues) we were eventually given a lovely suite on the 3rd floor which was spacious and well appointed. The hotel itself is on the edge of Funchal but there is a lovely promenade walk into the centre (about 45 mins) and also a courtesy bus, local bus (No 2) and taxis. We felt that the courtesy bus could have run later into the evening, 6pm was the latest. The public areas are kept spotlessly clean and there are numerous refreshment facilities. The gardens and swimming pool areas of the hotel are beautiful and well maintained. The heated indoor swimming pool is not large but much appreciated when the weather is not so good. The outdoor pools are not heated but are refreshing on a warm/hot day and there are lots of loungers around the pools. At breakfast there was a large choice, well presented and replenished frequently. Eating outside on a warm morning was very pleasant indeed. We didn't eat here in the evening but there are very good restaurants nearby. The staff were, on the whole very helpful and friendly, special thanks to Sofia for her cheerful and professional helpfulness during our stay. We hope to return before too long. Would definitely recommend.

This our first visit to Madeira and we loved it. We chose to stay at the Pestana Grand partly based on the reviews we read - we were not disappointed. The staff were friendly, professional and willing to help. The building and amenities were spotless and well maintained to the point where leaves and petals from around the pool were being picked up regularly! The room was large, bright and airy and spotlessly clean. The breakfast was to die for (champagne included) with all dietary requirements being catered for as the norm. We will be recommending this hotel to all our friends and family and will put our money where our mouth is and will definitely be returning.
