Lovely sea view studio and we left the balcony door open all night. When we arrived there was bird mess on the balcony, o.k. birds are a pest but still there a couple of days later, plus the black tiled floor at the entrance into the room was looking rather messy which looked like foot marks in the dust. We politely complained at reception and it was rectified immediately, can't praise their reaction enough. Next a silly old woman's complaint, the wardrobe door have a little knob, hard for old arthritic fingers to get hold of plus the door was very stiff and had my hubby not been there I couldn't have opened it.. Now my really big complaint, we had Christmas Eve and Christmas Day evening meals in the hotel. Fantastic meals, unfortunately after only being able to eat less than half of the Christmas Eve meal for what must be the third year running I'm afraid I'm going to have to rethink Christmas 2018. Shame because you couldn't ask for a better meal. However my complaint is - in spit of the notice outside the restaurant about dress code for evening meal and the staff checking you in and showing you to your table on Christmas Day, one young man looking like what I can only describe as a fat yob wearing dirty trainers, shorts and not very clean T/shirt was allowed in. And no you can't use the excuse that was the only clothing he could afford, if he could afford the Grand prices he could at least afford a pair of jeans. This you are probably not aware of? One one of the courtesy busses, the front row seat belt nearest the window on the nearside can't be used because the bit that clips in is missing. Daniel in the bar, like the rest of the staff couldn't do enough for you, hope I'm not getting anyone into trouble here, but we had a lunchtime snack in the bar, nothing wrong with it just too large a potion. The next time we asked if it was possible to have a steak sandwich and two plates? We didn't get what we expected, but two beautifully served meals each with just half a sandwich. You can't do better than that, and it just encourages us old moaners who don't eat a lot to return because we know we can eat what we pay for. Very impressed. As Vacation club members we expect a certain standard and in spite of the little cleaning incident we got what we would expect. I always end a review with, would I return? Not until the end of February when my friend and I are coming to celebrate our 74th birthdays. My friend is disabled and I wasn't too sure, but thanks to the advice from Elizabeth our Customer Relations lady on which room we need and so on and so forth we will be back late evening on the 23rd February for a week.
Thank you pestana grand for once again exceeding all our expectations of a wonderful family holiday. Luis the bar manager, Hosé in the breakfast buffet, again cared and looked after us, we complement you on all your staff, who were extremely kind and caring. We have visited pestana grand many times before, and we look forward to our next amazing visit. Thank you, Jennifer
The hotel was in a good location right by the sea. We had a car but also used the courtesy bus to go into Funchal. The evening entertainment was mixed - really excellent on some nights but awful on others. The room was a side room but had a great view of one of the pools and fantastic sunsets. Large room and really good bathroom with a separate bath and shower, also a bidet. Toweling gowns were provided which guests used to go down to the pool. Pool towels also provided and changed once they had been used. The food was very good - plenty of choice. Lovely to eat breakfast outside in October just as the sun was rising. We ate at the hotel for three evenings and out at local restaurants just a short walk away for the rest of the time. Madeira is a lovely island and it is worth exploring. The scenery is very impressive.
If you are looking for a large, light, friendly, spotlessly clean good quality hotel on Madeira this one deserves considerable thought. Spa, indoor pool, outdoor pool, lovely well kept gardens, courtesy bus into Funchal (3 miles or so) 9 till 6 7 days a week.. We had a sea view room on the first floor (1146) and I would highly recommend the additional cost as opposed to a side sea view or a room overlooking the car park. Room was spotlessly clean and excellent housekeeping... only complain is that the room had an old and very outdated old CRT TV ... which completely spoilt the whole look of the room... a flat screen tv is now a must have in most people's book these days . Room had a perfectly good fridge and excellent in room safe. Food was good - especially breakfast which was plentiful every day although I found the cooked breakfast a little greasy for my liking... (plently of other things though!) Drinks were not overpriced at all giving the 4/5 star rating and they even had a couple of 241 happy hours every night.... Entertainment was a bit of a non event however... and in my eyes is the biggest drawback of the propetry. However, despite this I would happily stay there again
Went to my 12 year old for a mini break, the staff is so nice;they can teach a thing or two on hospitality to staff in other luxurious hotels We were surprisingly upgraded to a bigger room, with a very nice view. The decor is not the most modern but the hotel is well maintained The choices at breakfast cater for everyone - any taste, any diet and the food is delicious. The dining area is spacious and clean Will gladly return and have recommended to friends
We chose this hotel in part because of its sea side location rather than the noisier downtown hotels. There are still plenty of restaurants nearby and a regular courtesy bus into town, just a 10 minute ride. The hotel has restaurants and a bar but other local bar and restaurant prices were more favourable than here or in the town centre and maybe a bit less touristy? Excellent facilties at the hotel and very friendly staff. We stayed 2 years ago and note that they still haven't replaced the tired and worn out towels! Breakfast was our highlight of the day at the hotel and was varied and very generous even though the tea was catering grade Tetleys and the coffee from the type of machine that you get at a railway station. (There's a little cafe behind the hotel that has a proper espresso machine). But a great hotel with a friendly welcome and as much or as little to do as you need.
great service, fab food and accommodation, helped my daughter with crutches when an incident occurred, great pool woth sea water; clean, 5 star service and help; bus into city centre; were made feel welcome
Excellent hotel and facilities efficient friendly staff , quiet location, an excellent two week holiday with Half Board food excellent.. We had a lovely room on first floor with excellent side sea and garden view no sun in the morning but sun in the afternoon, we were out site seeing all day so enjoyed the large balcony and and wonderful sunset in late afternoon /evening before dinner.
This hotel is of a very high standard with beautiful rooms, attractive sitting areas, excellent food, and a lovely spa area. The Grand is some distance from the centre of Funcall, although we enjoyed the walk which takes at least 45 mins. However the hotel does offer a frequent courtesy bus service. Thecpromenade/lido walk in both directions, and especially west towards Camara do Lobos is delightful. Our seaview room was spacious and we received clean both towels as well as pool towels twice a day, together with bed turn down and a chocolate! Breakfast was busy but the choice and quality of food was excellent. Staff throughout the hotel were very friendly and helpful. The hotel offers the main buffet restaurant in the evening, as well as Italian, Moroccan and Steak a la carte restaurants. We only tried the Moroccan and found it very good indeed. Close to the hotel there is a very wide choice of reasonably priced and good quality restaurants where we ate most evenings. We made full use of the Pool, Jacuzzi, Sauna and Turkish Bath and found them excellent. Entertainment is provided on some evenings, and this could possibly be improved. Overall, we were very pleased and would be keen to return.
An indifferent hotel with some positive things but some negative. First, its not 5 star standard, its an OK 4 star at best. First the good; -The rooms are large and clean (but a little dated - not a huge problem for me) -The outside pool and grounds are lovely -The quality of the buffet breakfast and evening meal was good (at breakfast, a four minute boiled egg was perfect - unusual in my experience and the bread selection was excellent) -In a great spot right next to the promenade though be warned, its a good 40 minute walk in to central Funchal The bad; Now, some of these might seem petty, but they add up to an irritating lack of 5 star status, so bear with me; -Staff are variable in their friendliness and helpfulness. The lady who checked us in was cold and unsmiling and was distracted by other things, so it took us about 20 mins to check in. Even then, at 4.30pm our room wasn't ready. I had to go back to checkout and remind them we were waiting. In addition, there is a large sports centre next to the hotel which me and my SO wanted to use. We asked at reception if there were any concessions to hotel residents. We received an almost embarassingly abrupt reply 'No, I have no details. You'll have to ask there.' Later in the week, in the hotel, we found a notice board that showed a timetable for the sports centre showing various classes we could attend for free and various times we could use its indoor pool free (it was too cold to use the outdoor pool at the hotel and the indoor pool is too small for a swim). Finally in relation to staff attitude and again a bit petty of me, but I was at this point carrying a number of irritations about the hotel on my back. At breakfast we ordered tea and coffee and went off the the buffet. No tea/coffee on our return. We waited, watching people who had arrived after us receiving their hot drinks. I attracted a waitress who seemed to realise we had been forgotten. When the drinks arrived, I said, in a jokey manner 'Forget us?' The answer was a curt 'No', absolutely nothing else. - The quality of the guest towels are awful - thin, rough, off white and bleached to within an inch of their lives. Same for the bath robes. - No slippers provided in room (see, I said some were petty, but its the first 5 star I've stayed at where no slippers were provided - as the floors are stone/wood, slippers would have been nice) - No conditioner with the toiletries supplied in the room - Unreliable room service. I bought some flowers for the room and asked for a vase. Three hours later I had to ring and remind. We needed more milk for the tea service in the room. I left a note for the room cleaners when we went out. Back 6 hours later, no milk and it needed two calls to reception and a delay of an hour to get it. - Teapots in the restaurant - honestly, I've seen better in a greasy spoon. They were horrid stainless steel shapeless badly pouring horrors. Come on - you're supposed to be 5 star! - No toiletries in the indoor pool showers. In addition, you had to take a towel with you as none are provided by the pool. Not a problem in a 3 star, but definately not 5 star Overall, not a bad hotel, but not one I would choose to stay in again. There are lots of hotels to choose from so I'll chance my arm with another next time I visit Madeira. Incidentally, Madeira is fabulous - get in to the mountains if you can on a Levada walk. It was aweinspiring!
