It’s a shame that this hotel stay was ruined by a trivial matter, the removal of all sunshade umbrellas from around the pool whilst the sun is still strong enough to burn and prevent you reading an LCD screen. The latter matter is trivial but the sunburn risk is a HEALTH AND SAFETY ISSUE! The pool staff will not discuss the matter and I asked for the manager but to no avail, clearly not interested in the health and comfort of their guests.... Otherwise by the way a very good hotel.

A perfect place to spend a relaxing week on this beautiful island. Our room looked out over the gardens and I was woken by birds singing. Breakfast outside beside the pool was the perfect way to start the day. Would definitely return.

We stayed at the Pestana grand for one week. Cannot complain about anything. Unfortunately the sauna and steam rooms were not hot, however, it wasn’t the end of the world. Breakfast was fantastic.Hotel was busy but apart from breakfast time it didn’t feel like that. Sun beds were always available. Hotel a 5* in my opinion. The views, the walks, the food were all brilliant. The walk into Funchal took about an hour. Some good hills though, good for the heart! Had coffee and cake at the Ritz in Funchal for about 11e. Ride on the tuk tuk back tot the hotel was fun , 10e Taxi 10e Lots to do if you want it but very relaxing too. All meals out, fish steak were very reasonable prices. Definitely going again.

Want a relaxing and restful holiday go to Madeira where the people are friendly, staff helpful and the island is beautiful and clean. Will return to this Island for a relaxing holiday. Go and enjoy it!!

We are a family of 3, 2 adults & our 5 year old daughter. We stayed at this resort for 7 nights & wished we had booked for a longer stay. The hotel was in a lovely quiet area with beautiful views of the ocean. Our room was very spacious lovely comfortable beds with a sofa and an arm chair lovely to sit and relax with out having to sit on the beds The room also had a fridge & a safe. The bathroom was lovely & clean with everything you need & 2 bath robes. Our room was cleaned every day & fresh towels left daily. We stayed half board so Breakfast & evening meal was very much enjoyed at the hotel. We used the indoor pool as it was heated my daughter enjoyed the pool daily. We spoke to the reception staff about hiring a car & they recommend a local firm & sorted it out for us & with in an hr we had a lovely car for the week. My daughter enjoyed the little play area it was kept tidy...it had 2 benches for parents to sit and relax in the sun while children play. We enjoyed our stay & cant wait to return possibly with other family members. Thank you Pestana Grand for a wonderful holiday.

This is not a 4 Star hotel by international standards. It is part way through a refurb with no efforts made at all to give guests refurbished rooms in preference to old tired rooms. We were initially allocated a ground floor room with view of noisy service entrance despite the hotel being approx half full. After requesting s mivd we were moved to a similarly uninspiring but slightly smaller room on the 2 nd floor over the main entrance and bus stop. We were advised other rooms with better views were available for 300 Euro supplement. I do not understand why s hotel would not allocate its best rooms if not at capacity to maximise customer satisfaction? I am a regular visitor to Portugal but will never now condider a Pestana property. The room we had was next door to one being refurbished too so whilst we enjoyed our old uncomfortable beds, 90s decor, scuffed walls, stained carpets and old style tv (no flat screen) we got to listen to the builders next door too. Linens and towels were poor quality and threadbare ( not sure if this would be the case in refurbished rooms). The 3rd bed supplied for my 7 year old was of particularly poor quality and again not commensurate of international 4 star standards. Cleanliness was good as was maid service generally. When we were checked in we were provided with a 4 page leaflet detailing the pool rules for our 7 year old - the English translation clearly stated all outdoor pools were adults only with the exception of the 30cm deep children’s wading pool. When challenged we were subsequently advised he could go in the pools if accompanied by an adult. Given the lengthy doocument it was hard to judge whether this was a genuine translation issue or a reversal by management of an ill thought out policy. Clearly the need for adult supervision is perfectly acceptable and even deeming 1 of the 2 swimming pools to be adult only would have been acceptable but to give out notices saying that families can not enjoy one of the key amenities of the hotel together is very poor. Breakfast was good, a wide choice, we’ll replenished and served by helpful and friendly staff. We ate in the hotel at lunch time - ok but expensive! We fix not try any of the hotel restaurants as there were so many excellent other places to eat on the island and much more reasonably priced. The hotel is much more geared up to an older clientele rather than families with dress codes and entertainment such as ballroom dancing.

We have stayed in three hotels so far in Funchal, and this was best. The staff are so helpful, the pool is great. Very good breakfast. I heard on a review that someone said the rooms were a bit dated. I didn’t feel that way at all. Rooms are fine. Only maybe the TVs are a little old fashioned, but who the hell needs a tv when you are in Madeira?? It’s a good location and you can walk down to cable car area in about 45 mins. If you like a walk. If you don’t like a walk they offer a free bus. Highly recommend

Just got back yesterday after 8days in this amazing hotel. The location was great for us as it wasn’t too close to the city centre but right by the ocean hence view from room was gorgeous and worth looking forward to every morning.

My husband and I stayed in my prefered room, a Studio for Christmas, you can leave the balcony doors open and hear the sea all night. While there I got the idea of bringing my lifelong friend to celebrate our 74th birthdays.She's disabled therefore we would have the bus into Funchal rather than taxi's, also Elizabeth in our Vacations Office said we would need a one bedroom apartment as my friend needed a shower.I booked a one bed room but didn't get it. On check in we had the usual glass of Madeira, and told on the 5 floor to to turn left out of the lift . My first moan, I wanted to turn right because the view is better. Our room was right at the end, second moan to the lovely young man who was bringing up our cases, we would be overlooking the road. The apartment door opened into a long hall way and the young man guided us around the apartment, to which my friend said, "It's the bloody Penthouse' I tipped the young man as usual although he was reticent about taking it but said he would put it in the charity box. I had the en suite double bedroom because it had a bath, I hate showers. Next a small shower room, ideal my friend said, then her double bedroom. A small kitchen on the left, big enough for tea and toast, I don't holiday to cook, although it was well stocked with everything you may need. Facing the kitchen the dining area and lounge with enough room for my friend to pass easily with crutches between the coffee table and drawers with flat screen TV. The bedrooms shared a long balcony overlooking the road and furnished with a table and four chairs plus two sun bed. A tiny triangular balcony at the end of the passage with a table and chairs. The lounge balcony. sea facing again furnished with table, chairs and sun beds. The two main balconies large enough to hold a dance. Everything about the apartment is what we have come to expect and more from the Grand, but two things spoiled the look of the bedrooms, both had a big box TV on a stand at the corner of the dressing table. But then not being a TV fan I would say do you need TV's in bedroom? I had decided we would do an East Tour but the terrible storm was due so we sought the advice of the young man Udo on reception, warning him that if he chose the wrong day, he already knew I could moan, he chose the right day. During a week with quite a bit of friendly banter between Udo an I, I said I wanted to see the manager to complain about him. He guided me to a desk that had a photo of the Hotel manager, Udo!! Pestana if you want an excellent teacher of customer service give Udo the job, He's so young when he brought up our cases on arrival I knew he was the most junior member of reception!! A hotel managed by him would encourage me back. One more thing before I start complaining, because of the storm and my friend being trapped in the apartment constantly drinking tea we ran out of milk. On reception Udo didn't know if the little shop which was closed sold milk. I decided to wait until it opened rather than go out in the terrible storm. Five minutes later back in the room two small cartons or milk arrived, on the house.You can't beat that. The courtesy bus, we tried once unsuccessfully at Christmas, it's been the same complaint for years when it just came from the Bay, now with the Royal, o.k. you've put an extra bus on but by the time it reaches the Grand there is room for 2 or 4 people at the most, and you'd be surprised how quickly little old ladies can barge their way from the back to the front of the queue. We had to let three buses go when the fourth arrived with space for 4 people we got on thanks to a large man who we had been stood with and he blocked the way and pushed my friend, myself and his wife on. From then we paid for taxi's. Why can't Pestana have a bus that starts at the Grand, then the Promenade and the Palms, it would save us old un's having to walk up Cardiac Hill from the Palms to the bus stop. As Vacation members I booked in the usual way, informing them we were celebrating our 74th birthdays obviously giving them the dates. As we wouldn't be arriving until about 9pm I also asked if we could have a bottle of water in the room so my friend could take her medication. The water wasn't there and as it's a yearly thing, hubby and I always celebrate our birthdays with Pestana and never have we not had a bottle of bubbly from the hotel. I have a feeling this was a breakdown in communications from Reservation to hotel, not the first time request, for twin rather than double beds haven't reached the hotel in the past. However, to end, what made our birthdays, we had our birthday cards on the dressing table in our rooms and the cleaners presented us with a glass with a few chocolates in. Not much, but a fantastic unexpected surprise. Thank you to our room cleaners.

So we had just under two weeks at this first class hotel over Easter. The staff are fantastic, professional and very friendly. Everyone speaks English. On arrival, unlike other hotels, your are actually treated as vip guests and instantly your check in is done without stress. Our receptionist even took us personally to our suite and showed us around. Our suite was just perfect for the three of us. Two separate balconies, two TV’s, a living room, sofa and chairs, all comfortable and twin sinks. Our chamber maid visited our room twice a day to tidy up for us and leave us some delicious chocolates, a real nice touch. The pools are great, albeit the water was really cold, but their heated indoor pool, jacuzzi and immaculate gardens certainly make up for it. We had a number of massages at the hotel but I did find them a little expensive and between 50-120 euros. If you are looking for something with a little more value, just visit somewhere outside the hotel. The breakfast and dinner included offered lots of choice and something for everyone. However, some of the drinks can be considered a little pricey, a small glass of sangria at over 7 euros! On a number of occasions we ventured out of the hotel and tasted some of the local restaurants. You certainly can get a very good plate of food and much better value for money if you travel out of the main tourist area. I would highly recommend this hotel and wouldn’t hesitate to come back.
