This was our first visit to Madeira and we were very glad we chose this hotel. It is a little way out of town, but the location is so peaceful, and taxis are only around 10 to 11 euros to the old town. The hotel was very nice and, as stated in other reviews, is spotlessly clean. The staff are friendly and amusing. We thought that food and drink prices were pretty reasonable compared to other hotels we have stayed in. My only gripe is that tea and coffee at breakfast is pretty bad. We loved the hotel and the island but mostly we loved the people. We will be coming back.
The restaurant and bar prices are typically on the high side. The bus shuttle service is a real benefit if you can get on the bus, some times during the day are very popular and it is a free for all. Hotel great location with cliff walk to bars and restaurants. Shopping centre with supermarket very close bye. Bus stop outside hotel with regular service into Funchal centre at 2.40 € per person. Nice pool and gardens. Room location and quality disappointing it seems the hotel rooms are pre allocated to various operators such as BA and Thomson. We were in first floor to one end of hotel. An upper floor room would have been better towards centre of hotel. Rooms are a bit dated with a steam driven square screen to a Not LCD as advertised a number of English language channels with foreign subs. Towels like sandpaper very poor quality for 5 star. I would rate this closer to 4 star. Breakfast is 5 star fabulous choices. Bar area very bleak and uncomfortable. Use aerobus from airport 5 € per person which stops outside hotel against 35-45 for taxi.
The rooms are well furnished with private balconies and maintainence is very good. The bathrooms are of a high standard and spotlessly cleaned daily. Storage is plentiful and there are beverage facilities and the usual mini bar. The lift systems take one down to large smart lounges which cascade down to the external pool level. The external pools are freeform in lush landscaped areas with snack bar facilities and plentiful sun beds. Overlooking the pool is the dining room where the staff look after you well. Of a self service nature, the food is of good quality and usually based on a themed system ie 'Mediteranium','middle eastern', Madeiran etc. There is a gym and pretty internal pool facility which appeared well used. Close to the hotel is a large modern shopping centre but the hotel also offers a free bussing service to the town harbour and thus a short walk in the bustling town centre.
The location of this hotel is a bit far from the center of Funcal, but hotel had a free shuttle to the city. Also walking distance if you like, about 5 km one-way. Hotel has a beautiful outdoor pool (2) but really cold water in April not heated and indoor pool heated (1) + jacuzzi very small space with the size of the hotel. Breakfast good, sparkling wine + and pool bar was nice, I would recommend choosing a sea or pool view room. The hotel's Italian restaurant was open only 2 days a week, odd. Nearby there were 2 good restaurants serving food all day, beach and right an old shopping center Pizzeria and seafood restaurant, nice food. Good jogging grounds just beside the hotel, from the hotel to the boardwalk and go right you can walk along the beach to the next fishing village about 4.2 km in one direction, a small cave, beautiful view's, small waterfall. The airport bus runs right next to the hotel, the price is only 5, - in one direction
There really isn't much to criticise for this hotel! The location is fab for this hotel, not a far drive from the airport. The hotel itself is beautiful and extremely well maintained. The grounds are beautiful and the rooms are very well decorated and big. The beds were very comfortable and the self-catering room included every thing you need. The staff are great and couldn't do enough to help! We attended the welcome cocktail night which was great to speak to people. Beautiful views from the balcony if you have a sea view room, and we even had a dip in both the inside and outside pool which was great. Hotel was in walking distance of local shops, restaurants and supermarket. Right next for 'Forum Madeira'. Lovely bakeries and coffee shops. Try Real Canoa on the strip of restaurants outside the hotel. Steak on a stick is amazing! - and you can get discount with your Grand Pestana Discount Card. There is a free shuttle coach to Funchal which you receive the times for at Reception upon check-in. Super easy to use and journey time is quick and frequent. Free wifi at the hotel is really good, although did cut out quite a few times during our stay. There is like 3 channels that have English programmes. All 3 were Fox channels (American) so if you like CSI and random American films, you're all good! They have Happy Hour twice a day. 5:30pm - 6:30pm and 9pm - 10pm. Worth doing but you can only have two of the same drinks, no mix and match and also no cocktails included. The only negative which really was disappointing was the price of the drinks at the bar and the restaurants in the hotel. I would never pay 28euros for a buffet meal, not even in England! I think if they lowered the prices of the restaurants and drinks in the hotel you would see a LOT more guests visiting and spending money in the actual hotel instead of going out. All in all, a really fantastic hotel. I can understand why so many guests go back every year and invest in time shares. Well done Pestana, one very happy guest! Hope to see you again in the future!
We just got back from a fantastic holiday at the Pestana Grand with my daughter who is a wheelchair user and my 3 year old grandson. Everything about the hotel was outstanding. Our room was spotless, the whole time we were there we always had a supply of clean towels. Breakfasts were excellent and always had a good selection of fruit cereals cold meats cheese bread bacon eggs etc. The staff were wonderful and helpful at all times. Well done to all at the Pestana Grand especially Sophia in reception.
My favourite part of the all trip was the concierge Udo, who helped me in several things. I was traveling alone so it was lovely to have his suport, I really believed that he sould be promoted. The ground are beautifull, room was huge, breakfast delicious and the bus in to town made life a lot easier to go to Funchal.
We spent a lovely 10 nights here over the Easter holidays. As others have said the rooms are slightly dated now (bathrooms especially) and despite paying the supplement for a sea view suite we were allocated a room on 1st floor so wasn't the best view & we were disturbed early in the mornings from the restaurant with chairs being scraped across the floor! That said the room was comfortable. I agree with the other review that these rooms shouldn't be the same price as floors on higher floors. Reception staff were always friendly as were the guys in the bar. With regard to the bar, I do think a 5 star hotel should have a choice of wines - as it stands there's only Verdi, white & red - none of which were very good.... Restaurant staff were a bit hit & miss, especially in the Moroccan restaurant (shame as the food was delicious). Breakfast was ok, the guy with the hawk is a nice touch & meant we could breakfast in peace without pigeons around. Evening entertainment is definitely aimed at the older guest market.....it didn't matter to us as we ate out most nights so avoided it! Pool area is lovely although at this time of year the pools were very cold. We didn't have any problem using the indoor pool with the children though & the playground area & kids room were also useful. The hotel ran an Easter egg hunt on Easter Sunday which was a nice touch - only spoiled by grandparents getting in on the action & collecting eggs for their grandchildren which meant that not every child managed to find an egg!! The hotel staff did provide chocolate for those who didn't find any eggs but really the older people in question should have been ashamed of themselves! All in all the hotel is good standard, reasonably priced & I would recommend & would return again.
Very impressed with this hotel. Its located perfectly, facilities were fantastic, staff were friendly and helpful and in general felt like we were really well looked after. My only bit of advice would be to request a room at least second floor and above. I had booked for a twin suite sea view, but the first room we were given was located on the 1st floor with a roof directly outside our balcony with bushes growing on it. This meant sea view was only possible if you stood up. My kids were out of luck completely! I asked to be moved, and they were very helpful and understanding. I was relocated to a 4th floor room with stunning views. I would recommend the first room I mentioned have a lower rate, as they definitely weren't comparable and I would have been quite disappointed if they had not moved me. At the very least, I would suggest the hotel inform the guest prior to arrival they'll be having this room.
When we arrived after an early morning flight, the reception staff were very friendly and after about half-an-hour of waiting and some hushed discussions the receptionist asked us to take a seat which is always a bad sign because we were unsure what the problem was and whether there was a room at all for us. After some more waiting the same receptionist came around and said that our room was not expected to be ready until 3PM as is typical with most hotels. We were a bit annoyed at the time but they pacified us by giving us some vouchers for drinks to use at their bar. However, since we were hungry and wanted to eat something, we asked the receptionist to recommend something. We were given directions to the local mall which is about 5 mins walk away but a bit of an uphill walk. It is Funchal's biggest mall and had plenty to eat/shop. After lunch we came back to find that our room was ready and it was a spectacular room on one of the higher floors with very good views of the ocean looking East and the infinity pool below. The room was well kept and we had no complaints. Breakfast was a good spread but a bit chaotic with lots of people but still the omelettes were made to order and fresh orange juice etc. The outdoor seating by the pool area on a few of the sunny days especially in February was an absolute treat. The ocean walk is nice and peaceful and there are plenty of restaurants in the vicinity to eat. We had rented a car and so didn't need to use the hotel shuttle but were told that it was good too. There is a public bus stop almost outside the hotel gate too. The hotel has some open air parking in front of the reception area and an underground car park too. The concierge was very friendly and gave lots of tips about what to see on the island. Driving on some of the roads with numerous tunnels was exciting and exhilirating to say the least especially with fog settling in on the steeper mountain roads and the GPS insisting on taking you on the most narrow stretches with sheer drops to about 600m down!! So, beware while driving. The mountain walk was fun and the glass walkway across a gorge on one of Europe's steepest cliffs was nerve wracking.
