Stayed here for a weeks holiday. Great welcome at reception with a glass of sparkling wine. The room was spotlessly clean and an equally clean bathroom and everything serviced fully every day. Breakfast buffet had everything you could want with hot food also. A smile every time from all the staff made nothing appear too much trouble. It's an ideal hotel to explore Funchal and Madeira via the various excursions. Would definitely use again.
I really enjoyed my stay at Hotel do Carmo, from start to finish they couldn't help us enough, I had a outbound flight problem where I needed an extra night, which was sorted without a fuss. We had wine on arrival whilst checking in. The information and guides given were so detailed and helpful we did almost everything suggested! The breakfast was tasty and plentiful (even when we were late down) Whether it be printing boarding passes, chats at the bar, drinks to the pool- the list of 'favours' could go on but nothing was too much trouble. Nadia, Tania, Carla and Rui (to name a few) were all fantastic and great company! The décor is really quirky but everywhere is immaculate, our pj's were folded into shapes in our room! The room was light and airy with a small balcony, peaceful enought to enjoy the morning sun or a late night drink on! Its a great location- 10mins walk to both the old Town and to the mariner and cathedral. Thank you for making our short stay so enjoyable! Will definitely be returning!
This was our first stay at Hotel do Carmo although my in-laws have stayed there multiple times. We enjoyed it very much. The staff is fantastic. Walking distance to everything we wanted to see in Funchal. Rooms are clean. Hotel is clean. We did not use the rooftop pool because of weather but it looked very inviting. Great value. Only problem I would see with this property is that the rooms are not air conditioned. Fine for us in April. Staff is very friendly and attentive.
Near harbor and old town, very good location. Good service at reception and good choices in breakfast. Room was clean, maybe little musty. Good choice if you want to see city of Funchal. Market hall and shopping center are quite behind the corner.
This 3 star hotel is conveniently located downtown within easy reach of supermarkets and all attractions. There are sun loungers and a pool on the top floor. English speaking staff are very helpful. Breakfast and dinner are available at their restaurant.
I am very sad to write this review as I was expecting a little bit more from this hotel. Hotel do Carmo is a unique peace of art in Funchal. The theme of the hotel definitely takes you way back in time and it shows that the 50’s and 60’s are still very stylish nowadays! If I would be a professional photographer this is the place I would take some nice shootings. But unfortunately the hotel looking is the last thing you should take in consideration on a review. The reason of this poor classification is due to the mattress. You can feel the strings and when you seat down right in the middle of the bed you can see the mattress doing a sandwich from both sides. I believe that no matter how big or small the hotel is and and how many stars it has you should be provided with a great sleep. I was aware of previous reviews, Where they have mentioned before the same thing although I assumed the Executive team of this hotel had already though for a plan of action. I must say that all staff members have given me a warm welcome and are very polite always prompt to help. So my review is a should be taken as healthy business warning as I believe that this hotel has much more to give. It is time for the executive team to step forward. Madeira as a lot of attractions and I feel that new young explorers will turn up, and the hotel must keep up to make profits. Everything else is the standard of this hotel I would not expect more. The team is fabulous very approachable. Kind Regards Guilherme Reis
I am *so* glad we picked the Hotel do Carmo for our recent stay in Madeira. It is in an absolutely fabulous location, a couple of minutes away from the seafront and the Mercado dos Lavradores - and less than 5 minutes from the marvellous Funchal old town, all the restaurants, bars and charming cobbled streets. On top of the location, Do Carmo has a real "unique selling point" in it's quirky vintage cinema themed décor: reception, the bar and the hotel front look like somewhere you can easily imagine Steve McQueen hanging out wearing a polo neck and smoking a cigarette - and each of the hotel's rooms has a unique "vintage theme" and black and white photo art in the room.... I slept with vintage cars above my bed, and my friend I holidayed with had her own room featuring Fred Astaire :) Other than this likable "quirk factor" with the decor, the hotel Do Carmo is a pretty basic / mid range hotel and fairly frill free: the breakfast buffet is edible but unfancy (the cold cinnamon French toast was great, the coffee only barely passable) - the rooms are spotlessly clean and comfy, with wifi and a big TV but no notable extras (a small fridge would have been a godsend to let us have cold water to take out on our mornings with early starts out walking in the mountains, as would heating in the rooms, we went in February and it was a bit chilly!). The roofside pool has great views, but is unheated, unmanned and the stairs into the pool aren't as robust as they could be. However the plus sides are considerable and made a great difference to our stay: rooms absolutely SPOTLESS, the level of hygiene in the hotel was faultless. The hotel staff were friendly, helpful, efficient and spoke excellent English - you barely had time to finish off the complimentary glass of bubbly (lovely touch) as you were all checked in swiftly without complexity and with smiles all round - anything else we asked them for during our stay they were super helpful (bus times, room heaters, help when I'd stupidly locked myself out of the room with the key inside - etc). The staff are a real credit to this hotel and make the stay feel special and smooth. The showers were *excellent* - great water pressure and variable heat - so many hotels you have a choice of "ice" or "scalding" but not here - and a great hot shower is a fab thing to have when you're away from home! All in all a great experience and I would definitely come back. The hotel Do Carmo is a great value pick particularly for travellers interested in character and accessibility to nightlife over de luxe resort extras, thank you so much to the management for an excellent stay on your beautiful island :)
We stayed at the Do Carmo for 1 week in February 2017, booking via Tui. We chose the Do Carmo for its location. The hotel is a few minutes’ walk to the sea front and old town. The cathedral is about the same distance in the other direction. We looked at the 5* hotels but they all seemed a good walk to taxi ride away from the centre of Funchal. As other reviewers have said the hotel is a little dated but spotlessly clean. The breakfast is a bit sparse but when you consider the price of the hotel its fine. Our hotel room (318) had a balcony and bath and was cleaned daily to a high standard. The rooms do not have fridges or tea making facilities but there is a hairdryer and safe in the room. The wardrobe space was good with lots of coat hangers. After a day exploring we nipped to the local supermarket and sat on the balcony with a wine and beer. Overall, we are pleased that we chose the Do Carmo because of its location, each night we walked into the old town where there is a great selection of bars and restaurants. The hotel staff were all friendly and helpful.
I was immediately drawn to Hotel do Carmo when somewhere else described it as "quirky" ! There's a 60s feel to the place with each bedroom displaying a huge black & white print of something or someone iconic (I slept with Jane Fonda for a week !) and other 60s memorabilia around the place. The room (double) was clean and perfectly acceptable, with en-suite loo, bath , shower & bide . Breakfast was perfectly adequate too and typical all self-service holiday-hotel-fare (cereals , various cold-cuts of meats, cheeses , preserves etc , a good selection of breads and of course, delicious Madeira cake ! Tea & Coffee from machines and free CHAMPAGNE (more likely sparkling wine !) available too ! I didn't stay for any other meals tho' the menu seemed to change nightly. All staff were well presented, friendly and good english speaking. I had a non-sea-view room, with balcony (table & 2 chairs) but the view was a little scruffy but absolutely not a problem for me. There was an upper sun terrace (level 5 - accessibly by lift) , with an upper-upper pool (stairs only) then another upper-upper-UPPER Sun Terrace 9stairs only) with good panoramic views of the town. The hotel's location was perfect with a selection of shops and cafés only 2-mins walk away and the entire town center no more than 10-mins walk away. I'm already planning to visit Madeira again in September '18 and, if available, will definitely stay at the Do Carmo again . "Muito Obrigado !" to all Hotel do Carmo staff .
People in the reception were kind The Cleaning service was in top the location was perfect, next to the old center. Nice pool and lounch area at 5 th floor. and sundeck at 6 th floor with a 360 degredes view over the city.
