People in the reception were kind The Cleaning service was in top the location was perfect, next to the old center. Nice pool and lounch area at 5 th floor. and sundeck at 6 th floor with a 360 degredes view over the city.

If you want to stay clear of the tourist ghetto west of the city and get the feeling of staying in a living city, then Hotel do Carmo could be a good choice. It´s located some 5-10 minutes walk from the shopping district and about the same distance from the old city with all restaurants. Though, in the immediate proximity of the hotel there are not many restaurants. The hotel itself is a bit worn and torn, but has a friendly atmosphere and a very kind and helpful staff. Breakfast is quite all right, with something for everybody.

Lovely welcome with glass of sparkling wine and quick, efficient check in. Like the 60,s theme, clean rooms and roof top pool plus terrace overlooking the city and good central location. Friendly staff, good breakfast choice but coffee could be better. Had dinner a couple of times which was very good , well used bar .Comfortable bed with soft pillows but had a few sleepless nights with the wind blowing unstable metal furniture on tiled flooring.

Modest and lovely hotel with a great 60's theme. All the staff were excellent and welcoming, clean rooms, great choice at breakfast, nice roof pool and lounge area overlooking the city and a great central location. Thank you for a great stay.

Very nice and clean hotel with very kind and helpful hotelstaff! Nice interior, nice terrace with swimmingpool. Very good breakfast and good drinks at the bar( try the local drink Poncha) 😍Suosittelen lämpimästi!

If you are looking for a affordable, immaculately clean and comfortable hotel in the old town of Funchal then look no further. I can only but endorse the many reviews. The rather unique 60's retro theme is well advertised throughout the hotel. I was kept company in my bedroom by a large wall photo of Bridget Bardot, (Room 104). The reception is very welcoming. A glass of sparkling wine is offered on arrival. A quick, efficient, courteous check - in. The rooms still have a old metal key control, so don't forget to hand it in when you go out. The bathroom certainly needs updating, especially the shower arrangements. The bathroom only has 'small hard soap'. The shower gel is provided in very small sachets. Suggestion: Bring your own bath gel and hand wash! There are no face tissues provided. (Plenty of toilet tissues)! No tea/coffee facilities in room, so bring your own travel kettle with coffee/tea and uht milk sticks/tubs. Madiera uses the European 'two pin'. Don't forget your plug adapter. The room was kept immaculately clean. The ceiling fan has three speeds and very effective. Obviously not required on this visit, however very useful in the warmer months. A suggestion to Management: When you next organise a painting programme throughout the bedrooms I suggest you chose 'warmer' colours rather than white. It feels very 'clinical' - like being in a Doctor or Dentist's waiting room. Management please note my compliments to your housekeeping team for their efforts to maintain such high standards. I found the free hotel wifi efficient. I cannot be without 'Classic fm'! Suggestion for those reviewers who may prefer classical music try: King FM 98.1 Just look for the appt and download. It's a music station based in Seattle, Pacific North - West. Chose the 'Evergreen' option. No chat just classic music 24/7. I know I am digressing. Breakfast is good - typical continental but with hard boiled eggs or scrambled with bacon. Nice selection to start your day. I personally found the soft mattress bed very comfortable. The soft pillows were a bonus. Obviously everyone has different preferences. The area the hotel is located is clean and appeared safe. I have been visiting Funchal for many years. There is no sigificant crime. Funchal has a reputation for accommodating the more 'mature' age group. I think personally this may be the case. If you are looking for a '18 to 30' club scene then maybe the 'Canaries' or mainland Spain? I did not use the hotel cafe or restaurant for lunch/dinner, however from my observations the meals looked inviting. The hotel has a rooftop swimming pool, which, again I did not use. The views are well worth a visit to relax and get your 'bearings'. It is only a 10 -15 minute walk to the waterfront. Plenty of choice for casual eateries: Mac's / Pizza Hut / Burger King.!!! Obviously there are many 'traditional' options. Suggest you browse the restaurant choices on Trip Advisor. I used Jet 2 for this trip. Staying for 7 nights bed and breakfast, flying from Birmingham cost about £480 per person. I have used many 'holiday airlines' over the years: Thomas Cook / Thomson / First Choice, not forgetting - the late lamented - Monarch, which I was sad to see go. I used them for just flights also. Personally I feel Jet 2 deserves it's number one spot! So, I make my contribution as I sit in the small cosy hotel courtyard enjoying the sun and local temperature of 18-20 c! Enjoy your visit.

The kind people there..the ambiance..the location and the nice breakfast made our stay really pleasant. Will recommend this hotel becausecthey have a relaxed terraceroof too. The terraceroof has a nice view on the harbour with the cruiseships. We were in wintertime..so did not use the pool..but looked really nice too. Clean rooms..nice bed...balcony .. Little garden outside..nice bar...we loved it all Thank you !!

3 star hotel in near center of Funchal. Within walking distance of town, restaurants, cafés, shopping. Attentive, multilingual, and professional staff, full and extensive breakfast included. Rooftop terrace with tremendous views, swimming pool, bar, and most spacious rooms. Very happy with my stay at Hotel do Carmo.

Excellent location for Funchal Old Town, restaurants, cable car and market. Good value for money and friendly staff. Superb views of town, sea and mountains from roof terrace - pool temperature in December distinctly chilly!! All in all Madeira is a most excellent destination for a winter break. Particularly the amazing Christmas lights in Funchal and pretty much every other town & village!!

Stayed for 8 nights during Christmas holiday and had a very pleasant experience at the hotel. During this time it was a nice and relaxed atmosphere, helped by the cool retro interior and an excellent rooftop terrace. Conveniently located and nice staff. Really enjoyed our stay.
