The hotel is in a perfect location and is very affordable for those on a budget. It offered good facilities, to be expected of a 3 star hotel. The rooms have a ceiling fan which was pleasant during the warm evenings. The bathroom was in need of some updating and an extractor fan would have been a bonus. The buffet breakfast was good and had a good selection of food to choose from. A roof top pool and further roof terrace area was lovely for resting in the evenings after a day of walking around. Such wonderful views all around. The hotel was in a perfect location for accessing the old town and many bars and restaurants. It was a short walk to the ocean too, which was nice promenade to walk along first thing in the morning. It was great that tours were able to pick up directly from the hotel. I would recommend this hotel on the basis of cost and location.
Hotel is in a very good location right in the centre of funchal. Great rooftop pool with views of the port and all around funchal.. Meals are very basic, only one meat and one fish option, Breakfast had a limited choice of toast, scrambled eggs, cocktail sausage / tealight keeping food warm. The Dining Room is dark and cold during the winter months, No heating in bedrooms for the winter months.
Our stay here was average. The room was clean, and serviced everyday. Most of the front desk reception was kind and helpful, though one in particular was not. The rooms do not have air conditioning, so to sleep comfortably, it's nice to have the balcony door open. Be warned that if you're on the street, the street noise is prohibitively loud. (We were not treated to the most friendly service when we asked one evening if they could move us to a room away from the road.) The breakfast buffet in the morning is very good. The location is great - easy walk to Old Town and to the Marina. Parking is 6 euro per day and you're placed in a lot across the street that may or may not be easy to get in and out of depending on the spot you're assigned.
Pros; - Superb location; 5 min walk to the waterfront, old town, market, cable car etc - Extremely friendly and helpful desk staff - Good breakfast buffet selection - Nice rooftop pool with great views over Funchal - Rooms very clean - 60's decor and photos v cool Cons; - No air con. There is a ceiling fan but it doesn't cool as effectively on warm evenings. - Rooms and decor a little dated - Bathroom didn't have many flat surfaces or much storage space Would definitely stay here again despite it not being as plush as some hotels. The location is fantastic although, if it's hot, the lack of air con is a problem.
Good location, pool with a view, vintage decoration, comfortable and clean, staff very friendly and efficient. Rooms and bathroom in need of an upgrade but overall a very positive experience. Would definitely stay there again.
I stayed at this hotel for 9 nights while on a walking trip. Staff fabulous, breakfast excellent and room a good size. Great swimming pool on the roof. Bar service very good. Location perfect for walking to shops, restaurants, siteseeing. A/c would have been nice. Fans just not good enough for hot humid days.
Excellent hotel tucked away in a side street of the old town. Hotel and room spotlessly clean. Buffet breakfast had a good selection and was always well stocked. Room and bed were very comfortable. Only 10 min walk to a good selection of local restaurants and the harbor area. Every one of the staff that we interacted with were friendly and helpful. We walked up to the Lido area one day which is where most of the hotels are and I would not like to stay up there. The Hotel do Carmo is in a much better location and I would definitely use it again.
This is a lovely comfortable hotel for a bargain price. The location is ideal for exploring Funchal. I have given 4 stars as the rooms are a little dated. But you can be sure of a warm welcome here the staff couldn't do enough to make sure we had everything and we were greeted on arrival by a glass of sparkling wine. Very good!
We were really impressed with this hotel. We stayed 2 nights before moving on to Calheta. The reception staff are friendly and attentive and will do anything to help. We arrived before our room was ready but completed the check in process, left our bags and headed to the city so we only had to collect our key on our return. They were also able to suggest tours and trips and would book them for you. The room itself was nice, all our requests (upper floor, balcony, single beds) were met. The rooms aren't huge, but plenty big enough for 2, with space for luggage. The balcony was nice- views mainly of the road below but you could get a glimpse of the sea and the mountains. The room doesn't have air conditioning but the fan was perfectly adequate and didn't keep us awake at night. Bathroom was clean, spacious and had a bath and a shower. Cleaning was very good every day. Hotel has a nice rooftop pool and sun terrace- amazing views!!! Wasn't warm enough weather for us to use, but ironically the pool itself was really warm (we dipped our toe in!). Breakfast was continental- perfectly adequate!! Overall- not luxurious but more than adequate as a nice stay in the city, with space to relax if needed. Very good value for money.
An hotel in the city of Funchal which doesn't look much from the outside but we were very happy with our stay there in April 2017. We had a room on the fourth floor with a balcony, which overlooked the narrow street. This was quiet and peaceful for nearly all of our stay except for the Sat. evening when some people were at an establishment across the road talking until 2am. That was the only thing we could complain about really. The room was big enough, the beds were comfortable, there was enough storage space and we had a good shower over the bath. There was a large fan on the ceiling but we didn't have to use it as the temperature was perfect while we stayed there. The breakfast were good with a large bowl of really nice chopped fresh fruit; yogurt, muesli; lots of cold meats, cheese etc and a variety of breads and cobs. There was always some scambled eggs, little sausages or bacon and boiled eggs. The cups were a decent size for the coffee or tea, which was a nice surprise as usually the cups are too small in these hotels. This hotel has huge black and white photos of iconic people from the 60s and 70s in all the rooms and some other places. ---we had the James Dean room. I saw very few children, lots of the people staying were walkers and we saw them every morning in their boots and haversacks waiting for their mini buses to take them on the organised walks. We did one of the levada walks and it was really good. If we go back to Madiera we will do some more. Not many people seemed to use the roof terraces and swiming pool but it was pleasant enough and looked clean and there was plenty of sheltered places to get out of the sun. We ate out every night; the Old Town has a narrow street with lots of decent restaurants and also a ten minute walk the other way took us to a street full of good places to eat. The hotel staff are very nice and will give you directions to any places you want to go. We soon found our way around Funchall, which is a really nice small old city with lots of shops and nice looking old buildings. We did a tour of the east of the island in a mini bus and it was really enjoyable. Wonderful wild mointain scenery. We will go back one day and when we do will will stay at this hotel again.
