A fabulous hotel - wonderful friendly service, beautiful gardens, large rooms facing the sea with lovely terrace. Pool in gardens and 2 further sea pools a short walk down the cliffs. Pool towels and gowns are provided. The hotel is quite close to the airport but do not be put off, it is not disturbing. This is a very peaceful hotel. Excellent breakfast buffet. Good restaurant for casual lunches or more extensive a la carte evening meals. 20 minute walk to nearest village or short taxi ride to a village or town.
A lovely property with a breathtaking clifftop position. You are made to feel welcome by the friendly staff from the moment they collect you at the airport till you leave. The proximity to the airport makes for easy transfers yet when you are at the property you are totally unaware of it. There is no noise at all. The pools, both the freshwater one and the lower seawater ones are ideal to laze around and admire the sea views. There are ample sunbeds and space to fell secluded if you wish to. The rooms are large and all have nice balconies overlooking the sea.The beds are huge and comfortable and the bathrooms are well fitted.Little touches like fresh fruit in the room makes your experience feel welcoming. The restaurant serves excellent food at reasonable prices and the big breakfasts easily take you through to the evening. It is a short walk to the nearby village of Santa Cruz if you fancy a change of restaurant occasionally. It was our first visit to the island and we will certainly be back.
It's hard to fault this fine hotel. My only criticism is the occasional banging of cupboard and bedroom doors that echoes up and down the corridors. One is sometimes forced to share more of fellow guests' stay than one might choose. And, given the number of English-speaking guests, an English language news channel - BBC World, Sky or CNN - NOT Fox or RT - would be appreciated. Of the levels of service and the quality of the cuisine, enough has been written. Both were superb. A tip: make sure that the heavy glass sliding door is firmly closed before you turn on the air conditioning. It won't work if the door is open, even a fraction.
The rooms are light and spacious and we were delighted to have such a lovely view of the sea and islands in the distance. Situated conveniently close to the airport and not troubled by aircraft noise. Rooms very clean and excellent room service and pleasant helpful reception staff. The hotel was quiet and the gardens pleasant with interestingly plants and trees. The sea water pool was gorgeous at the foot of the cliffs. A little disappointing it was empty for a couple of days of our stay but it was refilled. Good snorkelling in the sea which is clear teeming with fis and crabs. The breakfast was excellent with a wide range of breakfast goodies and freshly cooked eggs to order. We would definitely visit again and look forward to it.
We stayed here for 11 nights and had a room on the ground floor. Costa and all his staff run a first class establishment which includes a drop off to & from the airport. Breakfast was lovely, lots of choice (my other half has a big appetite and was very well fed) the waiting staff and chef were so polite and nothing was too much trouble. Rooms were clean, large & well attended with a huge, comfortable bed. Loved the pools down by the ocean, on a calm day we snorkelled and when the ocean was wild we sat in the little caves in awe watching the water pour into the pools. The other pools up the top were clean and you get a great ocean view whilst relaxing. The airport is very close & for me that was one of the best bits! Never got bored of watching the aircraft come around the bay then line up to land on the infamous airstrip. Noise can be heard when they land & take off but it's not intrusive and only lasts a few moments. We walked to Santa Cruz most evenings (take a left out the car park and follow the broken road to nowhere and along the ocean front - about 15/20 mins) lots of nice places to eat. In the day if we weren't relaxing around the pools we walked to the airport or Santa Cruz and caught one of the SAM buses. We are the type of couple who like to explore & mix with the locals. The buses are cheap & regular. Try and take the bus from Funchal to Porto Moniz (€12 return) to the Piscine Naturals! Amazing trip along the winding roads to the NW of Madeira. Going in the other direction, Baia d'abra is a must. Our first time in Madeira and we fell in love with the island, if we choose to return we would only stay at The Albatroz. Thank you for having us.
We were a little worried about the hotel being directly next to the airport, but the only thing that you can hear for a few seconds when you are outside are planes approaching. All the rooms have a direct view on the wonderful sea, are big, comfy and get cleaned multiple times a day. You always feel very cared for, the food was excellent and all the staff was always there to help you with anything. They organized our trips, had very good tips what to try and to visit and always gave you the feeling that they are interested in your experiences. The big seaside pool with access to the sea was wonderful. The freshwater pool up by the hotel has a bar. There is a tennis court that can be used for free (rackets and balls are provided). My only slight complaint would be the fitness area that only has a mat, a crosstrainer and a treadmill, but since there is so much to do on Madeira that really didn't bother us at all. Thanks again to all the wonderful people that made our holiday so memorable, especially to Carolina, Sveja, Costa and Diego! We hope to see you again soon. All the best from Switzerland Grit & Christoph
We stayed from the 28th. Of August - 4th. Of August, and had a wonderful stay. The staff was all very welcomining and chatty, great relaxing location, we had No issues during our stay, No noise from the nearby AirPort. My Best recommendation goes to Albatroz!
When we first arrived on Madeira, we spent two lovely nights--and had two terrific dinners--at the delightful Albatroz before moving into Funchal for our last two nights (only to get a different view of the island). All went well until our return flight to Lisbon was cancelled. Then our new "family" at the Albatroz came to our aid--picking us up at the airport, giving us their last room at a reasonable rate, and offering all sorts of help with our attempts to re-schedule our flight. They went above and beyond, rescuing us and turning a lost day into a much better one.
This is my second stay at this wonderful hotel and it won't be the last. A completely relaxing stay in a small, intimate, yet dramatic setting. Beautiful gardens, truly excellent food and staff who could not do enough. This hotel is run to an exacting standard and oozes understated service at every turn. All the rooms look over the Atlantic to the Desertas islands. Funchal is less than half-an-hour away by bus and the pretty village of Santa Cruz just fifteen minutes on foot. The airport is nearby but is not a problem. This is a truly exemplary hotel.
Just popped in for a drink and a bite to eat. We were made to feel most welcome. Excellent personal service .The chefs prawn and smoked salmon salad was devoured by my wife while I had the grilled prawns. ..exquisite!
