Five Reasons to Stay at Heron’s Nest This Summer: *Private Forest Setting: Nestled among tall evergreens with filtered bay views, this is the kind of place where you can truly slow down. *Cedar Hot Tub & Outdoor Shower: Unwind after a hike or beach walk with a soak in the hot tub or a refreshing rinse under the open-sky shower. *Easy Access, No Crowds: Just a 10-minute ferry ride from Bellingham, Lummi Island feels like a true getaway—without the long drive or long lines. *Simple Island Adventures: Explore quiet beaches, scenic trails, and local art studios, or bring a kayak to paddle the shoreline (just keep an eye on the tides). *Outdoor Living: Dine on the deck, read in the shade, or spend evenings around the fire pit—Heron’s Nest is built for enjoying the outdoors.
Late Spring & Summer at Heron’s Nest Cabin
Warm weather brings out the best in this forest retreat. Inside, the open living space features a wood-burning stove for cool nights, comfortable seating for relaxing, and a large dining table with views of the nearby lake. The cabin is well-suited to couples or solo travelers looking for a nature-forward escape. The outdoor spaces are where the cabin really shines this season. Start your day with a coffee on the covered deck or a rinse in the cedar shower under a clear morning sky. Spend lazy afternoons in the hot tub or with your feet up in a shady spot. The fire pit is a great place to unwind after dinner, especially when the sky starts to fill with stars.
Explore the Island at a Summer Pace — Hiking & Nature: Curry Preserve and Baker Preserve offer quiet trails with rewarding views. — Water Access: Bring your own kayak or paddleboard and explore the bay—but always check the tide charts and weather conditions. — Local Flavors: Pick up fresh produce and handmade goods at the Lummi Island Saturday Market or stop by the Islander for picnic supplies. — Art & Culture: The island’s artist community is active year-round, with occasional open studios and local galleries worth visiting.
Why Choose Heron’s Nest Cabin This Season? **Peaceful Setting: Surrounded by forest and filtered views of the water, it’s the kind of quiet that’s hard to find. **Relaxed Design: A mix of rustic features and simple comforts makes this cabin feel welcoming and unpretentious. **Summertime Living: Hot tub, fire pit, outdoor shower, and plenty of open-air lounging spaces.
Your Summer Reset Starts Here
Whether you’re looking for a digital detox, a quiet writing retreat, or just a few days to relax and recharge, Heron’s Nest Cabin offers the kind of peace that sticks with you long after you’ve left. Summer on Lummi Island is easy, unfussy, and full of natural beauty—and Heron’s Nest is a front-row seat to it all.
*Our ferry, the Whatcom Chief will be at dry dock from April 26th through May 11, 2025
Dry dock is a special time of year for Islanders and guests alike. During dry dock the Whatcom Chief (our vehicle ferry) is taken out of service for maintenance and repairs. Whatcom County supplies a passenger only ferry while the Whatcom Chief is away.
Typically there is a parking area on the mainland side and a regularly scheduled passenger shuttle on the island. Many Islanders leave one car on each side during this time though many of them use the shuttle, walk or get rides from willing Islanders.
With far fewer cars traveling the island, there is more quiet and tranquility. The passenger only ferry gets us out of our cars on Gooseberry Point to enjoy the fresh air and scenery as we wait for the ferry. Once aboard the ferry we are able to sit on top and truly enjoy the short trip across Hale Passage. It is indeed a special time on the island.
To afford such privacy as you will find at the Heron's Nest Cabin there is a steep driveway. Care must be taken traversing up or down the driveway.

A trip on the Whatcom Chief Ferry is required to get to the Heron's Nest Cabin. The ferry is operated by Whatcom County, and runs at least every hour between 5.40am and midnight on weekdays, a little less on weekends. Round trip fare is $14 for the vehicle and driver and $8 per passenger or for walk-ons. Fare is collected during the run to the island by the purser who will come to your vehicle to collect - credit or debit card only, no cash is accepted.
Walk, bike or drive to the house from the ferry dock and 'downtown' Lummi Island. We are approximately 3.5 miles from this area of the island. 'Downtown Lummi Island' consists of The Islander - general store, coffee and pastries, wine, beer and alcohol. Also attached is Sisters Gallery which highlights Island Crafters and Artisans.
The Island Library has books and movies, of course but also an island history section. The Island Post Office is a full service post office with limited hours, and the Beach Store Cafe has great pizza and specials every weekend. The home is not child-proofed - there are no covers on the outlets, or locks on cabinets containing cleaning products, etc. You are responsible for taking precautions to keep your children safe. The property is near a (quiet) road and is not fenced, please keep your children within sight distance.
There are security cameras in the back yard. There are NO cameras inside the treehouse or cabin. Cameras are not monitored during guest stay. They are for security between stays only.
The property is directly across the street from a body of water, please be aware of water safety.
The property has an in-ground hot tub, play structure, fire pit and a treehouse. (The treehouse is not included unless an additional fee has been added to your reservation.) Care must be taken in and around these items and on all parts of the property. Parental supervision is required at all times when on the property.

Relaxing and restful stay
Heron’s Nest is exactly as described and the perfect place to relax and unwind. The lodge is clean and comfortable with everything you need to enjoy the beautiful surroundings. We enjoyed the covered porch during a couple of rainy days and enjoyed the hot tub, as well. Lots of hiking trails nearby and the farm stands on the island were wonderful. Communications were prompt and helpful throughout and were appreciated. Could not have been any better! Awesome stay!

Absolutely gorgeous place. Everything was perfect. The only drawback is the driveway. Very steep and very narrow. But once you get there, it’s all worth the effort!!

Amazing property! Serene and relaxing.
What a great home on a quaint island. Perfect for a relaxing weekend getaway.
Jackie is an amazing host that communicates thoroughly before and during your stay. The house has everything you’ll need and more.
My only comment is the home is listed with 2.5 full baths but the main house only has 1.5 baths. This was not a big issue for us but just something to note. There is an outdoor shower but it was too cold to use at the time.

Beautiful!
Honestly the pictures don't even do this property justice. The home is pristine and gorgeous and we thoroughly enjoyed our relaxing stay at the property. You'll definitely want to pack light as the trek up the hill is challenging with large bags but the view from the top is totally worth it. Thank you to our hosts for an incredible experience!

Amazing!!!!
Property was everything and more! The cabin itself was perfect. Clean, beautiful, and functional. The outdoor areas and views were what really made this place. The hot tub was so nice. We ate all of our meals on the back covered porch. Wife and I talked about this being an every year tradition! Jackie was also amazing with her communication and prompt responses. Thanks again!!!

Perfect location for a small group
My wife and I stayed with 3 friends; it was absolutely perfect. The view is amazing, the house has everything you want on site (just bring food), and multiple ways to wind down and relax are provided: hot tub, covered patio, firepit w/ chairs.
All of us enjoyed ourselves and we intend to make this a regular event.

Great stay! Great Place!
Jackie was great, helpful, and easy to work with. Property was actually a little better than advertised. While it looks great as it’s listed, it’s even a little better, when you get there. The deck and Jacuzzi are obvious features, but I really enjoyed laying in the hammock, looking up at trees, or out into the ocean. It was the serenity that we all needed.

We wanted a family getaway for the 4 of us (parents and two teens), and this was perfect in every way. The property is beautiful and the cabin is so cozy and comfortable. The woodstove kept us warm inside and the hot tub kept us warm outside. Wonderful place to unplug, relax, and retreat. We'll definitely be back.

Perfect Thanksgiving getaway
This is a cozy beautiful home tucked away in the woods which makes for a magical holiday weekend. The amenities are really great, loved the beer/beer guide provided! Thoroughly enjoyed the outdoor amenities as well, cedar hot tub not to be missed. The beds are very comfy and the living space was great for catching World Cup. The fireplace is nice in the rain but we were still drawn outside to some fun activities on the property.
