Relaxing Getaway
Relaxing vacation! Quiet and river front. If you have young infants be sure and bring a baby gate. One is provided to block entrance from the bottom level to the main level, but we had to use a quilt rack and boot mat that was provided to block off the main level steps up to the loft. Other than that, no complaints. Well maintained and accurate description as posted online. Would definitely rent again in the future.

Family Fun
Our family had Christmas in this beautiful setting!!! Easy trip to West Jefferson for fun. The house had beautiful views! It was a little more worn than we expected, but functional and cozy. We ended up buying towels and washcloths for everyone due to limited and worn supply. We had 6 adults, a teen, and a baby. The shower curtain liners need to be replaced and the rugs cleaned. We're going to rent again next year, so obviously not too shabby! As a side note ... Our son had to call AAA because he had a flat tire. The servicemen that came out were wonderful!

Fabulous
This was exactly what we were looking for. Peaceful and secluded! The river was beautiful. A short hike downs up but I didn't mind it. Everything you would need in a kitchen to cook. About 15 min to downtown West Jefferson which is super cute! It was fabulous!

Happy, but disappointed more than happy
The location and house were wonderful. However, the house was very dirty. My husband had to unclog two drains.
The amount of dust that was on furniture was very gross. In the kitchen, the window was covered in dead bugs. At least clean that!
The dust bunnies under the couches were nasty. We found them when one of our children’s shoes went under the couch and came out covered in dust.
It is a mountain house, but not a tent. I was expecting a mountain house not a luxurious hotel, however the dirt was awful.
The location and the river are wonderful. I would just suggest a deep deep clean.

Quiet getaway in a spacious cabin
This dog-friendly cabin had plenty of space for the whole family to spread out and relax. Check-in and check-out were a breeze. When not on long day trips, my family dined in West Jefferson and cooked in the well-equipped kitchen. We all enjoyed our stay!

Beautiful setting
Great house for our vacation with grandchildren. They loved the hot tub and all the games on the lower level. We made use of almost everything the house had to offer - grill, firepit, outdoor decks, hammock, hot tub, and river.

Beautiful cabin in the woods
The cabin is beautiful and it has everything needed to have a relax time in the mountains. Our family of 4 and a dog had a great time exploring and hiking through the area. The cabin is secluded but close to stores (20 mins away) and skiing resorts and touristy places are an hour away. We were lucky to have a family of four deers coming to our cabin every day. The check in and check out was easy and the communication with the rental company was very good too. Very likely to come back.

Great view of the river!
We loved sitting on the deck looking out to the New River. Location was convenient to the activities we were interested in (Va Creeper Trail....so much fun! And Grayson Highlands state park). We went into West Jefferson for groceries and shopping. House was very clean and equipped nicely. Would definitely return!!!

Had a great time here and fit our group of six very comfortably. Really enjoyed sitting in the river and hanging out with my friends around the campfire. One of the few times where the photos of a vacation rental didn’t do the location justice in how wonderful it was.

Not Ideal for Winter Rental
We rented Mountain Lair for a Thanksgiving getaway for our family of 7, including an 85-year-old grandmother and a 6-month-old infant. The house is lovely in many ways and is likely a wonderful place to stay in the spring and summer months for a small family. However, it was not an ideal location for a late fall/winter rental.
When we first arrived and turned on the water pump and heater via the breaker box, an outdoor light and alarm went on with a loud beeping sound. We called the rental company for help, as we were uncertain if the water was usable/potable or pumping correctly and left a voice message -- it was well before after hours. We did not hear back until the following morning, but thankfully, the sound and light resolved themselves after about 30 minutes of constantly running the water through the pipes.
The gas fireplace in the finished basement (where the fourth bedroom and a private bath are located) had not been serviced recently and therefore did not function upon our arrival. As a result, the temperature in the finished basement area only rose to the low 50s with the heat on full blast from the temperature gauge on the main floor. When we called to report that we could not get the gas fireplace to function to heat the space, we were met with a great deal of pushback. A maintenance request could not be handled during the business day and we were expected to leave the keys for a repair person to visit while we were scheduled to be out in West Jefferson on Wednesday before Thanksgiving. This was concerning because we had our dogs in the home and were worried to leave them with a stranger entering the house. When a window of time was finally provided, it was from 5-8pm, which directly conflicted with supper reservations we'd had for four months. When we shared this with the rental agency, we were told quite brusquely that it was the only time it could be handled and we would have to either a) leave the keys or b) modify our plans accordingly. We chose the latter and fortunately, the repair person (who was truly wonderful), arrived in enough time for us to still make our reservation.
As noted above, during any of these instances, we had issues actually reaching the rental company team. They did not answer the phone ever -- only returned phone calls and texts as it suited them (sometimes 12 hours + later) -- and did not follow up on promised updates about the gas logs repair timing. It was extremely frustrating and stressful.

Spacious cabin with beautiful views.
Had a wonderful weekend with family and friends. Spacious enough for everyone to have privacy yet enough space to all gather together. The kids enjoyed the game room and hot tub. Dogs had a blast in the water. Would recommend.

Great cabin right on a very wide portion of the river
The cabin was just as breathtaking as the views. The river was in the backyard. There was no snow in the forecast and we were blessed NYE all day with snow. The driveway was not as scary as they made it out to seem. The WiFi is great and I got a lot of work caught up on.
My only three complaints were (1) the satellite reception was iffy on game day but only on ESPN and a few channels and (2) the bedding didn’t feel clean including dingy sheets and comforters (eek). (3) I would also highly encourage the owners to deal with the trash and not require it of the tenants; we spent over $2200 for the week and shouldn’t be bothered (nor nickel and dimed) over how to deal with trash. We drove 9/10 hours to be there and shouldn’t have to take the trash with us (there was a $5 per bag fee for leaving but needed to be dealt with through the cleaners).
I will also add that it was really nice they had firewood already cut for the fire pit to enjoy!
On a final note, be prepared to bring sunglasses inside as there are no window treatments in the living room and the sun is blinding first thing in the morning through the high windows in the A-frame.
Overall we were beyond satisfied and have already talked about renting it again next year!
