My GPS didn't recognize it so I was a little panicked. Stopped at another hotel on the piazza, he directed me. Turns out that the bollard retracts into the ground once a button is pushed. I drove at very low speed on the pedestrian-crowded cobblestone piazza to the front door of the hotel. It's ok to leave vehicle for a while so we unloaded. We're right on the lake! And it's so pretty! The room was what I call Swiss Modern. White alternating with a bright color, like yellow. Very bright. The window looks over the lake. If you were higher up you'd have a better view. Higher classification of room will have a balcony. We didn't spend a lot of time in the room as there is so much to do in Ascona. The ferry boats are right there. That's a great thing to do. About 15.50 CHF for a 90-minute tour of Zone B (Switzerland only). If you take more time you can get off and look at other little villages on the lake, or a lot more time you can go south to Italy. Breakfast is included, it was very nice. I could have sat there for hours drinking coffee and looking at the lake. And the mountains. On both sides of the lake. Such a great view. There was an artist guy painted like a statue which I enjoyed. He was grateful for a few francs. 313CHF for one night which included $15 for parking (offsite--kind of a nightmare to find down narrow alleyways, but suck it up buttercup, you're in Europe).
We enjoyed our stay at Albergo Carcani. The staff were extremely helpful & friendly. The room was cleaned to an excellent standard. We had a first floor room with a balcony & lake view. A market is held on the promenade in front of the hotel every Tuesday.
This hotel is beautifully located on the esplanade of this elegant resort. Our room was rather small but modern and well equipped (air con very welcome as it was very hot and sultry), with a balcony overlooking Lake Maggiore. Staff very welcoming and helpful; breakfast varied and excellent. One of the better hotels we stayed in as part of our three week rail trip around Switzerland, but it was also the priciest.
This hotel is right on the waterfront in a beautiful setting. The small ferry boats that travel Lago Maggiore are just footsteps away. Good restaurants nearby and off street parking make Albergo Carcarni an excellent choice in this area. I had a single room which did not have any water view. But for the price and the small amount of time I spent there, it was not a problem for me. The room was typical European size with a very comfortable bed, good closet space and a modern bathroom. The heated floor tiles were a very nice touch!
We booked two superior type rooms here recently, for a three nights stay. Reception staff were friendly and helpful, and the rooms were fairly spacious and comfortable, with really good showers. Each room had a balcony overlooking the lake (albeit partly obscured by chestnut trees). The hotel enjoys an enviable location right on the shores of Lago Maggiore, in Piazza Motta. While we enjoyed our stay, we do have a few grumbles! The somewhat limited restaurant menu – presented on rather unattractive plastic covered cards more reminiscent of pizza parlours or cheap chain restaurants – didn’t strike us as particularly imaginative. However, the ravioli dishes were excellent on two occasions, and attractively presented. There was also a very good breakfast spread in the mornings. More importantly, service in the restaurant in the evenings leaves much to be desired. We had made a table reservation for the first night of our stay, and upon arrival in the restaurant – which was largely empty with only a few guests at that time – we were told to “wait just a minute” by a rather brusque and unfriendly (male) member of staff, who then disappeared to serve some guests. When he didn’t return, we eventually lost patience in being left standing around and seated ourselves. The same front member of staff was equally offhand on a further visit to the restaurant on our last night, unlike that of a female member of the waiting staff whose attitude, in contrast, was friendly and welcoming. The hotel management might do well to identify and have a stern word with the culprit! Another gripe we have relates to their online offer of a gift for booking direct with the hotel, which is indicated as “1 bottle of red wine with a regional [Ticino] platter per booked room.” We imagined that this would be placed or delivered to our rooms upon arrival, but instead we were given a voucher to be presented to restaurant staff. All we received in the end was just a single bottle of wine, and no “regional platters”, without any explanation of any kind. While this did not amount to great hardship, it was irritating and the management really out to get this right. Conversely, a bottle of a good but fairly expensive red wine (at CHF49.00) ordered and supplied on our last night, was mistakenly left off the bill until we pointed this out to the staff, and a revised bill, including the wine charge, was subsequently provided. Ascona has no train station but can be reached by train to Locarno and a bus from the train station to Ascona Posta (a frequent service, in the direction Tenero, Linea 1, about a 15 minutes trip). Upon arrival at Ascona Posta walk up to via Collegio on your right and take this (not very well-signposted) small street through the attractive old part of the town and down to the lake shore; you’ll find the Carcani immediately on your left. It will only take about six minutes. Alternatively, a taxi from Locarno train station will cost about CHF25.00.
We decided to stay in this hotel because we expected a good price-value ratio. This assumption got confirmed. The hotel is getting a bit old but the bed is comfortable, the rooms are quiet and the hotel offers all the basics you need for a stay in Ascona. Also, the staff is really friendly and always helpful. The breakfast comes with a good quality and enough choices. It is worth to book the hotel directly on their website and benefit from a goody. Overall, we can recommend this hotel.
Modern, good decor, rooms immaculate. Great shower. Our room was at the front with superb views plus we could view the jazz concerts later in the evenings. Ascona Jazz Festival held all over the town in bars, hotels and in marquees on the lakeside during late June/early July. Fabulous atmosphere. Breakfast included in our booking. Very generous with fresh hot food offered. Good choice of food. Buffet and waiter service. Only downside Ascona is expensive and even more so during the festival time. Very happy to return nex year.
We had an excellent stay over the Easter weekend. This is a very friendly 3-star place - I was very happy I chose this over the 2-3 times as expensive 5-star options in Ascona, because it gives you the essence of a stay in Ascona: a direct lake view and a location in the middle of it all. What I liked: + Location right at the lake promenade in Ascona, with a direct front lake view and a balcony. When you stay in Ascona, this is where I feel you need to be. We spent hours sitting on the balcony enjoying the view of the lake and watching the people on the promenade. Don't understand the appeal of certain Ascona luxury hotels that are not even on the lake. + Very good restaurant for breakfast and dinner. For a 3-star place, the food was excellent. Good choice at breakfast, fresh fruit, high quality coffee, good choice of newspapers. Nice set menu at dinner. + Room quite basic, but spotlessly clean and comfortable. Everything brand new. Efficient housekeeping. + Very friendly service throughout + Access to the spa of the sister hotel Eden Roc at discounted rates - excellent for a rainy afternoon + Hotel-owned parking very close to the hotel Things to be aware of: * In Summer, ask for a room on the 2nd or 3rd floor, otherwise your lake view will be obstructed by foliage. Best book a corner room, you will have views in two directions. * Ask the hotel for directions when arriving. The promenade is a pedestrian area, but you are allowed to drive to the hotel to drop off your luggage. We nearly got stuck with our car in a very small side street * Book the hotel-owned parking at CHF15 a day. It's very convenient * Have at least one dinner in the hotel restaurant. We tried several options along the promenade, this was actually one of the best
Having stayed at several 3-star properties across Switzerland, this one is a gem. Albergo Carcani is located directly on the lakefront promenade offering spectacular views and easy access on foot, by boat (seasonal), bus or car to shopping, restaurants and local attractions. Newly renovated, even the smallest of rooms is modern, clean and comfortable. The front desk staff are friendly, helpful and efficient. The continental breakfast buffet is ample and fresh. Guests at the Carcani also have access to the luxurious spa at the nearby Eden Roc hotel (part of the Leading Small Hotels of the World chain) at a reduced rate (reservation necessary). Highly recommended!
As we were driving this hotel was difficult to find and sat nav didn't help. A local offered to lead us down with his car! Narrow bendy roads. Found it at last. Worth the wait. It's right on the lakeside near lots of bars, restaurants and shops, but not too busy or noisy. Once unloaded we had to move the car again to their private car park (15 swiss francs per day). We had a beautiful lake view from our room - worth requesting. Simple but very clean facilities in room. Loved the breakfast on the open fronted restaurant facing the lake in the sunshine. we watched the market being set up while we ate. Lots of local places to eat dinner but all quite expensive. Boat trips round the lake leave from just in front of the hotel.
