Beautiful Bantham beach is lovingly described as a tiny jewel along this stretch of stunning coastline. The sapphire blue sea and golden sands make this an unforgettable holiday destination. The waves attract surfers from all around the world but if you prefer a more relaxing stint on the water, Bantham Surf Academy will helpfully provide you with paddleboards, kayaks, wetsuits and all the information you need. Instructors are available to take you out in groups or one-one sessions if you fancy some extra tuition. Just minutes from here is the pretty harbour, where you can while away the hours crabbing, sailing, or just watching the boats go by. The Gastrobuses are a regular summer feature on the beach. Gourmet burgers, Devon ice-cream and amazing sandwiches are readily available all through the summer. Throw in some regular pizza nights with some live music and you’ve got yourself the perfect evening. The village itself is host to a fantastic pub/restaurant - The Sloop Inn. Here you can find delicious freshly cooked meals, an ever changing selection of creative daily specials using some of the freshest fish, meat and game and the finest local produce Devon has to offer. Head up to the village shop which stocks a great range of groceries, newspapers, freshly baked bread and pastries, as well as all your holiday essential including wetsuits, bodyboards and buckets & spades. Its beautiful terrace cafe produces a spectacular Devon Cream Tea which you can sample whilst overlooking the estuary and debating the age old question; Jam or Cream first?

Every room in this cottage is charming with little window seats and quirky angular walls. On the ground floor, there is a large open plan kitchen diner, which is extremely well equipped with everything you would need to cook an elaborate meal. There are plenty of pots and pans; dishwasher; large family fridge freezer; oven/hob; and microwave, kettle and toaster. The dining table comfortably seats 6. With cosy arm chairs too, the kitchen is the hub of the house. There is a lovely cosy living room with log burner, TV (with hdmi connection if you wish to stream from your tablet) and 2 comfortable sofas. The living room patio doors lead to the sunny patio garden. It has very high gates/fences which makes it very secure for your dogs and children (there is a high bolt to prevent small children from exiting the property unsupervised). With seating, this garden is perfect for a summer BBQ. There is also a downstairs cloakroom with washing machine and tumble drier. Upstairs, there is a master bedroom with a super-king bed. The master bedroom has plenty of wardrobe space and even has glimpses of the tidal Avon River. The second bedroom is a twin bedroom. The third bedroom is a superking or twin. There is a fully refurbished shower room with large walk in shower. There is a second bathroom with bath and shower attachment. As this cottage is old, the stairs are steep, so we would not recommend this cottage to anyone who is mobility impaired. The cottage does not have its own dedicated parking. There is a parking permit for the Bantham Estate beach car park valid for one car only for use during your stay (further details on the parking permit will be in pre arrival email sent out to guests 7 days before arrival date). Bringing your dog(s): We love to welcome dogs to Old Shop Cottage and we do ask that you keep your dogs off the beds and sofas. Dogs are allowed on the beach all year at Bantham (partial restrictions from May to September, but plenty of lovely soft sand at low tide). There are wonderful dog walks along the beautiful Avon river (so plenty of swimming opportunities!) and also along the magnificent Southwest coastal path towards Thurlestone (0.5 mile). There are no dog restrictions at any of the Thurlestone beaches.
The South West Coast Path runs right past Bantham - A ferry is available to take you across the River Avon (Not available all year round) and nature lovers may just glimpse Kingfishers, Housemartins and Guillemots in this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Look towards the shoreline and occasionally they’ll be a shy seal among the rocks or even a playful dolphin. If you want to venture further afield, Kingsbridge and Salcombe are only a few miles away and the historic Tudor town of Totnes just slightly further. Woodlands Adventure Theme Park, South Devon Chilli Farm, Living Coasts and Kents Cavern are all nearby days out, particularly good for little ones. If you fancy a change from the coast, you can head inland to stunning Dartmoor National Park, with it’s magnificent Tors and wild ponies, it’s just a short drive away.
