What can I say about Ala Kai B&B? My husband and I loved staying here! Mary is a thoughtful and generous innkeeper/hostess and the breakfasts were delicious with lots of local fruits. Wonderful talk-story with other like minded, adventurous people whilst having breakfast. Loving local touches to the rooms we were in made us feel right at home and the comfy pillows and beds made for a great night's sleep. Fans kept us cool during the hotter part of the days the rare times we were there in the afternoon and there was air conditioning if you needed it (we did not). I especially loved the print of the geckos playing poker in our room. We did not lack for anything and Mary was readily available for any questions. You can also do laundry here as well so pack light so you can bring more souvenirs back from this amazing island. We loved that it was in a quieter out of the way neighborhood across the street from the ocean and that every one knew everybody else. We feel like we not only got to know Mary but also her neighbors. I found this B&B by chance and there is now every chance that we will definitely be back!
What a lovely surprise to find this comfortable home in a magical location so near the Volcanoes National Park. The owner, Mary, has thought of so many things to make guests comfortable. She is very informative about sights in the area, the best little restaurant (Kaleo's in Pahoa), and how to make the most of sight-seeing in the area that was hit by the volcanic eruption and earthquakes in mid -2018. There is much to see, and I can't imagine a more comfortable place to stay as you make your day-trips to see it than the Ala Kai. We had rented both the two bedroom cottage at the back of the gardened property and a room in the house. Our grandson enjoyed the pool, and we loved the big front porch from which you can see the ocean. Each day, Mary served a lovely breakfast. And, buy a copy of Mary's mystery novel... but don't read it until you leave the B&B!
We enjoyed a peaceful and picturesque 3 night stay at this wonderful B&B. Each morning we enjoyed a delicious homemade breakfast on the lanai overlooking the wild Pacific. Our gracious host Mary was very helpful with advice about local hikes, restaurants and markets. She even lent us her well stocked picnic basket for our trip to the beach. Our rooms were well equipped and the beds were very comfortable. Overall, a lovely stay.
This was my first visit to this island or this state. My husband had been here before and suggested that we spend some time on the Hilo side of the island. I'm so glad we did; there is so much to see in this area that is worth more than a day trip from Kona. This location is ideal: beautifully situated in a lovely, quiet neighborhood, across the street from spectacular, rocky coastline, 30 minutes away from Volcanoes park, with miles and miles of lovely coastline to explore, as well as some stunning waterfalls and lush jungles. Our room was very comfortable, with everything we could want or need thoughtfully provided, from sunscreen to bug spray to a fully equipped picnic basket! We loved the huge river-rock shower! Breakfast was served on the lanai overlooking the sea, and was delicious; enough to keep us going until dinner! For the price of a second-rate hotel room in Hilo, we had a cozy, beautiful room in a beautiful setting. Mary's home is beautiful, and she made us feel like treasured guests there. My husband and I are private people and don't make friends everywhere we go, but we left Mary's inn feeling like we had a friend on the island. Highly recommended!
Stayed at the bamboo room that had a fantastic shower room. Breakfast was excellent with a great hostess keeping the place nice and tidy. A bit difficult to find when arriving after sunset but not all that much. So our warmest recommendations for a great 👍 place to stay when visiting the volcano side of the Big Island of Hawaii 😃 Monika & Jimmy 🇸🇪 😎🇸🇪
Our favorite residence. Clean Cottage and very friendly hostess. We also met Shakespeare and Asher. Delicious and varied breakfast Had a nice 4th of July party and met Mary`s friendly neighbourhood. Our kids had so much fun with the fireworks. Perfect view to the active volcano by night. Unforgettable. Highly recommended. Thanks for everything
Mary's B&B has a superb location by the Pacific, and she really makes you feel like home. The breakfast is gorgeous, and there is a pool to swim and relax, you know that. But what makes it really special these days is the view of the current Kilauea eruption across the bay. It takes only 5min walk onto the cliff and the glow is all yours!
What an incredibly unique volcano experience! We booked this B&B before the volcano began erupting, and I'm SO glad we didn't cancel. It was beautiful, comfortable, quiet, and the breakfasts were delicious. From the porch, you could see the clouds of steam from the lava off in the distance flowing into the ocean. At night, we walked out to the beach cliffs across the street and took amazing pictures of the glow of the lava reflecting in the sky. The host, Mary, was super friendly and helpful, telling us where to go for meals and adventures. Our kids loved the breakfasts, too-- I wish we could have stayed longer. We highly recommend staying here! We really felt like we got to experience the real Hawaii.
We were hesitant to stay so close to the fissures, given news reports, but it turned out to be completely safe and honestly the trip of a lifetime! The air quality was excellent, views of the lava early in the morning and into the night were outstanding from the Ala Kai, not to mention a lovely place to stay in general. The accommodations were great and Mary is super helpful in making suggestions. Her breakfasts are delicious and the surrounding gardens are so wonderful. It’s a great place to jog or walk and listen to the ocean, or just sit and read. Not far from Hilo with plenty of activities and sights!
My husband and I stayed here with our 4 month old daughter during April 2018 for a couple of nights and had a wonderful stay. We stayed in the Bamboo room. We reached out to Mary in advance to find out if we would be able to book that room with a baby and arranged to use her Pack N Play for our baby to sleep in.. It was perfect for our needs. The room was comfortable and cozy and had a cool rock tiled shower. What we really appreciated the most about this B&B was all of the extra comforts that Mary thought about it advance and automatically provided.. Everything from a cupboard stocked with extra sunscreen, bug spray etc if you ran out, to access to a washer and dryer, guidebooks on the Big Island, a delicious (and I mean delicious) breakfast, the swimming pool etc. When I asked where would be a good place to buy a couple of rain ponchos, she loaned us hers :) She was also a wonderful source of information about places to go and see.
