Found this place on Booking -- needed an extra night and this was one of the few decent looking places that did not have an outrageous cleaning fee. When you first walk into the check-in area, you think "pretty funky." We first showed up before check-in and the guy who came to the desk said to come back after 4. We did and the woman who helped us was friendly and helpful. I was a bit taken back by the sign-in sneet, which included initialling that you'd pay, was it $300 extra if the police had to come to you room (that was a first for me). Our room was on the top floor at the back of the place -- it seems that there are a number of management groups sharing this property. Our room was surprisingly nice, even romantic, even if a 3 floor walk up. Located right by town. The grounds were, again, surprisingly nice. The main issue was parking -- we had to park our rental out on the side of the highway. And there were some skeevy people around the property. But the staff was friendly, they even gave you free apple bananas, the room was clean and comfortable. Right in the center of town.
We stayed here on a timeshare exchange so we were in a unit owned/managed by Soleil Management, might be different than other experiences here as they manage only 10 of the units. We found our unit (351) to be clean and comfortable with nice amenities. We even had some view of the ocean, the tradeoff was that we were therefore on the end of the building close to Ali'i Drive and there was some noise from traffic and young people with their car stereos turned up way too loud. The staff were very pleasant. The pool was nice to swim in, and while it's nice that they have a hot tub, it's quite small and guests kind of have to take turns using it. The parking here is inadequate, I was surprised that we were able to get a parking space every day, but we generally returned from our day's activities in late afternoon or early evening and then walked to the restaurants and bars nearby. That's the best part of being here, you're right in the middle of the action and can walk to food, drink, beaches, shopping, and more.
My husband and I are staying in unit 208 for three nights in this lovely place. Before I moved in I was a little bit braised because of the previous reviews... But we're here for a nice surprise : the room is sparkly clean, the grounds look like tropical oasis and manicured to perfection. Beautiful pool, brand new luxuary jaccuzy, trees and flowers everywhere.. The hotel is old, but very well maintained. All units are individually owned and people and staff are very nice and helpful. Our unit has no kitchen, just a microwave, coffee maker and a blender. The mini kitchen ( was not even advertised) is stuffed with utensils for 2 people, so we can enjoy simple meals at home and save a bit of money- Kona is not cheap restaurants wise. The only thing that is missing is a cutting board and a pitcher. The room is very nice and very clean. The balcony can be cleaned better - my feet got black after I went there. But considering volcanic climate here, it ,it might be kind of normal. Overall I love this place- will stay again if come back to Kona.
I wanted to walk everywhere which we could do, however, this was the dirtiest place I’ve ever stayed. Called the off-site management who assured me they wanted us to be in a clean place and would send someone over to relearn immediately. NEVER happened! Took a shower and walked across the floor; the bottom of my feet were black. It’s rented as a condo, but when I asked for a kitchen wash cloth to clean the dirty dishes, I was told we weren’t expected to cook so we didn’t need this, but yet there were dishes. Supposed to be newly remodeled. If pulled items from the wall is “newly remodeled” then go for it. It was last updated in about 1960. WORST place I’ve ever stayed. I won’t be back to Kona Islander Inn through this management company or any other properties they have. Avoid cond 353! Make sure to vet your location better than I did.
Great location across the street from a rocky beach, near several restaurants. The grounds were beautiful. Furnishings were nice. Main problem - repairs are badly needed. Screen doors don't close. Front door closes if shoved hard/already has partly split the door. Kitchenette faucet so loose you have to hold the base to turn water on/off. Towel bar so loose feels like will fall off wall. Needs some TLC. Another problem - Parking was inadequate (we often had to park way down the street in a soccer field). We were warned in advance, which we appreciated.
We are frequent travelers and I would say that often what we end up with is not always what we expect. Sometimes the unit exceeds our expectations, sometimes not. This was clearly a “does not meet our expectations” On the plus side the location is right where you want to be and you don’t really want to spend a lot of time in the room hopefully. The pool, hot tub and BBQ are all really nice. Remember the bbq because you will need it to cook. The studio suite is just that. Microwave, toaster coffee machine and an under counter fridge. Small sink for dishes all can work. No stove or hot plate which is where the bbq comes in. As long as you can cook on bbq or microwave you are fine. I even did breakfast sausage wrapped in foil on the BBQ the night before. (Has to be the night before because the Bbq is in the pool area and it doesn’t open till 9 am.) And then just reheat in the morning in the microwave. Queen bed was nice and the A/C worked fine. It all sounds good so far with a 1970’s perspective. The problem was the bugs in the kitchen. Do not leave a crumb on the counter because it will be swarming with bugs by morning. A variety for sure. We made sure all opened dry goods were in resealable bags and everything else in the fridge. We were in unit 146 and it was called a timeshare unit. There are a variety of units. Some 100% owners, some timeshare and some perhaps hotel style units. For sure the bug thing keep us on our toes. Another unit on the 3rd floor discussed a rat stealing a banana while we compared stories st the pool. I would say that the one star rating is for the bugs and possible rats. Not the location. We made it work as it was all prepaid and we never heard about the rats until the second last day. Read the other reviews and I think you’ll find a lot like this. We are not huge complainers and usually try to make it all work so I’m just trying to be real. We would not stay st this location again.
Described by Air BnB: The Ocean My husband and I were a little disappointed in the unit. It is very dark and tired looking. We did book this studio because of the price and the fact that we were only there for 4 nights. I would stay at this property again because of it's location but not this unit. I see that some others have been updated. Pros: Great location, walk to everywhere for eating, shopping and entertainment. Pool and hot tub were great, nice and quiet. Bed was good. Cons: No elevator and on the 3rd floor. Didn't feel clean, needed some cleaning in the corners. Things seemed to be painted over instead of proper cleaning first. The fact that the kitchen sink is also used as the bathroom sink was a problem for us. It definitely needs a facelift. My husband asked if this is what a 2 star looked like?
I have never been grossed out in my traveling days. And were not picky even in our 60 and 70 s. We arrived to a dirty and a moldy couch. Old bedding that was questionable on cleanliness. The patio drape that hung right next to the bed had splattering of an unknown substance on them. The floors turned your feet black and no cleaning products in the room. The furnishings were broken and doors did not shut or lock. Clothing left in dresser. Complaints were not dealt with in a timely manner or at all. No fan, noisy old window air conditioner. Screen with holes which allowed the biting bugs to fly in. Patio that did not appear to ever been cleaned. No functioning smoke alarm. It is like they keep the outside appearance lookin good but put no work into the rooms not even the basics. If you go .......pack TP , paper towels, 409, pillows, laundry soap to do all bedding and a mattress pad to keep the bugs away.
This place is nice with gardens, trees, pool, laundry, decent location and basically a bunch of nice small studio style condo's. OK so why the rating of 1? PARKING. Less than 60 parking spots for 150 units, a lot of which are permanent residents. People literally wait out in the parking lots to get the next parking space and somehow my car got hit also. Had to park offsite several times in one week there and only once got to park somewhat close to my condo. So imagine having to park off property for luggage and groceries. I had to do both.
The location gets this place 3 stars, but overall experience is 1-2. Very close to many things. HOWEVER, desk has limited hours with rude and lazy clerks, and no trash service. Be prepared to buy dish soap and toilet paper because they’re not provided, and I have no doubt that you would be paying through the nose if you left any trash or dirty dishes. The apartments themselves could certainly use an actual cleaning. There is zero parking at the place and you will likely be towed if you park in any nearby lots overnight. Never again here.
