Watch the girls working in the restaurant

Two girls working at the restaurant lied to me about the costs of something. I paid extra for an egg and then was advised they didn't have the cheese for. When I changed my order I asked for the extra back which annoyed her. She reached in her pocket to get the 8 rand which was very odd as I thought that the money would or should have been in the cash register. Outside of that it's a decent place to stay with a lively nightlight.

The hotel is very nice, lots of common areas, and it's the first time I stay in a clean decent shared room. The staff keeps the dorm as if it was a five-star hotel room. However, internet connection was so bad, it kept coming and going. Have to work on that to be a fully-recommended property.

worth a look up..

nice place and decent rooms even though the TV and Aircon wasn't working.. the weather saved the day for me!! Otherwise it is a good hotel.. felt unsafe at night but that maybe a Joburg thing.. Must mention Nandisa (Nands).. at the reception. Very warm person and doubles as the karaoke artist in the evening, what a voice!! The break fast is nice.. just right!!

Nice location, comfortable stay

We were only there for one night. It was a perfect location. The only downside was the company which ran the airport shuttle. They charged us extra upon our return to the airport because it was an early ride. This is fine, but they already knew the time when I paid the initial fee and it was not stated anywhere in the contract given to us. It felt like a side hussle and was not appreciated. So I recommend customers book their own independent travel rather than using this shady company. The bar attached to the hotel was awesome. Very friendly.

The employees are always good as in the guy who checked me in assisted me even though there was a glitch in the system cause I booked and paid online but he still made sure that he assist me to the best of his ability. On Sunday as I was going in I overheard a problem that one of the guest who also happened to be a tourist was robbed in some station and as the guy explained her story to a lady by the name of Nandisa, the lady assisted the guy and went as far as demanding the police to come to the hotel and assist the guy where they can. Whoever trained the staff is really doing a good job hence I say Thank you staff of Once in Johburg you guys are amazing.

Great budget stay

This hotel/hostel was just right for us. The rooms are budget quality, so don't expect luxury. But the bathrooms are good, everything was clean, and the people were quite helpful. The location was perfect for us (foreigners with a one day stay in Joberg): it's right on a little square that is one of the nicer parts of the area; the hop on/off bus is one block away; and there's a fantastic bar and restaurant with live music across the street called the Orbit. Our stay definitely exceeded expectations and we would recommend the same to anyone who wants to see more of Joberg than the suburbs during a short layover.

Very poor breaky in the weird serving procedure to attain a bread roll,a piece of fruit, a glass of juice and a cup of coffee this takes at least 10 minutes and when checking in they even take your photograph despite having your passport details plus registration form to fill in, more like border crossing. Staff seemed to be helpful if you are generous to them

It's a well situated hostel now.

It is a hostel. The place was already a 3 star located in a young, vibrant and loud place, but now it's truly a hostel in the same environment. If that's not what you're looking for - don't bother to say here (not even in one of their "private rooms"). Try the Bannister or the Protea which are legit hotels in the same area. If you want shower gel and coffee and someone to actually change the sheets and towels, don't come here. In comparison with the other times I stayed here under different management, the standards are much lower now, the place feels like it's run by kids (well meaning and very fun, but still kids) and it's much more acceptable for hotel patrons to be loud. I didn't appreciate the 4am banging on the door across the hall by a guy who disappointed to not be getting any action from the girls who clearly locked him out. I've stayed here before and in years past the price was lower and the standards were higher. Now, it's basically just a dorm room that you pay for - they have doors on the bathrooms now though. That's one new positive...
