This is an old courtyard home with traditional Chinese bed (very firm). Modern bathrooms. No food service but inexpensive restaurants are next door and along the street. Near the tourist part of town.
Very good location in the centre of the old town. The owner,Tommy, arranged a taxi to pick us up at the high speed train station which is about 20 min drive outside the town. The room itself was lovely, old style decoration and furniture. Good bathroom was good and clean with hot and cold water. The room had A/C which was great to escape the soaring temperatures outside. Tommy arranged trips for us and gave us good recommendations for eating in the town. All in all a very good place to stay.
We stayed two nights at Pingyao Jintaisheng Inn, and slept in what was defined as a "Courtyard Super Deluxe Triple Room". We were 3 people: myself, my wife and our 17years old daughter. The room was too crammed with forniture: some of it "old" and interesting, most of it very ordinary and made of cheap plastics. The reasults was that, even though the room was not small, we had no place where we could store our clothes. The traditional, brick made, bed was big enough for the three of us but definitely too hard to be comfortable. The toilet was very small and the whole room was in serious need of a refreshing painting. No possibility to shade the light coming from the courtyard windows and too much noise coming from the heighboring buildings. On the positive side, the position of the hotel was not bad and the manager, Tom, was really outstanding in his efforts to guarantee us a comfortable stay. Quality/price ratio ifor this hotel is not really good.
After having traveled China for three weeks we stayed in Pingyao on our way to Datong. We hadn't seen so many Laowai's (western foreigners) since we entered China. So, if you should choose to visit Pingyao (I sincerely believe there are villages in China more 'authentic' than this tourist trap), Pingyao Jintaisheng is a really nice hotel to stay. The place feels truly authentic, has large rooms with original Kang beds and lovely decoration and the owner Tom is a cheerful dude and very helpful. He'll do anything to make you feel comfortable. And yes it is in the center, has wifi, air conditioning and all the other traveler necessities.
We liked the location and the fact that this hotel was set in an authentic Chinese 400-year-old courtyard. The problem is that we live in the 21 century and we are used to sleep on a mattress not on a quilt put on a "bed" built of bricks with a horrible pillow, beddings and towels that have seen much better days, and a floor that made the soles of our slippers black… The shower is located almost on the top of the toilet without even a curtain as the bathroom is in the size of a toilet room.
Very traditional old building with all the most important modern facilities (air conditioning, wifi and western toilet). The manager Tom speaks good English but wasn't there at our arrival, he wrote a kind letter with all the instructions and his mother gave us a map of the city with suggestions of restaurants and scenic points. We have no complaints and would certainly recommend this place, the only things that could be improved for next time are breakfast options (currently none available) and a hair dryer in the room (useful in winter days).
I have never written a hotel review before but i was so appalled by this hotel, i feel obliged to this one time. The hotel/room were fine. Very basic, what you would expect for what you are paying (noisy, not very clean, uncomfortable bed, stained toilet, bathroom that smells of sewage etc etc) but ok for a night. If you don't have time to read the whole review here is a summary: never have i stayed anywhere that takes 30% of your deposit for leaving a dusty mark on the bed sheet, and never have i booked and paid for a tour where the driver leaves you in the middle of nowhere. Here goes: 1. The driver was 50 minutes late to pick me up from the train station. Ok i got 10 RMB off the price but thats not really the point. I was given the usual 'theres a traffic jam, wait 5 minutes'. 20 minutes later i was told that the driver had already arrived.. Errrrr, no, he had not, and in fact didn't arrive for another 10 minutes. It was an easy drive back into pingyao, not a traffic jam in sight. 2. The deposit. 2 things you have to bear in mind: the floor of the rooms is quite dusty/dirty, and in my room in order the open/close the windows (or feel whether the a/c was working) you needed to stand on the bed. As a result of these two facts, i left a couple of dirty footprints on the bed sheet. Accordingly, they kept 30% of my deposit. Again, the money isn't the point. The footprints would have easily come out in the wash, it was just dust. Which makes me think that if the cost of laundry came out of the deposit, maybe they don't usually wash the sheets in between guests!? Furthermore, the money they took was more than enough for the sheet to be washed, in fact it was more than enough to buy new sheets!! Im absolutely appalled. Its also quite ironic that given the fact that pingyao is filthy (you only have to walk outside and you are covered in dust) they then get worked up about a dusty mark on the sheet! 3. A tour to wang's compound is 50 rmb. Add another destination like shuanglin temple, the price is 60. The con is that if you choose to go to a second destination, you get left there. If you pay MORE, you get stranded at the second destination and the driver takes those who have paid LESS all the way back to the hotel. But don't worry, you can get a taxi or take the public bus. Well shuanglin temple is in the middle of nowhere, there wasn't a taxi in sight and no bus came in the 30 minutes i waited. In a state of desperation as i had a train to catch, i ended up having to hitch a ride, at great cost to both my bank account and my state of mind. In the grand scheme of things, the extra money i had to cough up was not a big deal, it was the service and treatment i received that got to me. A whole lot of scheming and lies.
