Novotel Amboise is a victim of its own sucess. We were told on check in that the restaurant was full, but they could recommend places in town. No thanks. We choose Novotels so we know we can eat when we get there and not do any more driving. It used to be that a resident was guaranteed a table in a hotel, but no more. I had to ask if room service was still operating, thankfully yes. Our meal was delivered even faster than the reasonable 30mins promised on the phone. It was a good meal. Breakfast the next morning showed just how busy the hotel was, but other Novotels can accomodate big groups in seperate areas..why not this one in the middle of chateaux country? The American tour group we saw must have been expected.? Our check out was cheerful, but the lesson here is avoid August/Tourist hot spots and school holidays.
Fantastic location, Lovely facilities, including a pool, tennis courts and mini golf. Surprisingly, even in August, the pool wasn't amazingly busy which was good. Rooms very nice with lovely views. Restaurant has amazing views too and very well done. The service was not so great however, as we were never asked if we wanted more drinks or any condiments and the "well-done" burger was raw in the middle (waitress kept on insisting we wanted medium!). It would also have been nice to know that the meal would be charged straight to the room, so no need to wait to sign anything (we spent a long time trying to get the attention of a waiter to get the bill!). Would definitely go back, but would think twice about using the restaurant again.
This was a randomly chosen stop over hotel. Amboise turned out to be a stunning place (highly recommend the land train) where Leonardo Da Vinci lived his last few years. The hotel is about a 15 minutes walk from the center. This is the first Novotel I've stayed at that is actually in the countryside (makes a nice change from a city or industrial park). Plenty of free parking, lovely reception staff and it has a nice (but cold - which can be nice give how hot the weather was) pool, tennis courts and crazy golf. The views from the hotel look down to the center and you can see the château. It seem popular with coach trips so you might be unlucky and arrive to see the reception full of people trying to check in that just got off a coach and the resteraunt might be fully booked. Lots of places to eat in Amboise though. Definitely coming back in the future to explore Amboise more.
A well positioned stopover between Bordeaux and calais but we've done quite a few and this is neither best value our experience. The staff are doing their best but the novotel model seems to be not as good as it was. The restaurant food is terrible and a disappointing end to eating in France. The steak was so over cooked and was inedible, not good enough for twenty euro price tag. Menu has strange combinations such as cod soup served with boiled potatos at courgettes? Too pricey and not a good experience. The staff were over stretched and didn't question the uneaten steak. The 'superior' room was fine but faced on to the car park not a land mark as described. Only ok and not really 4-star in my opinion. There are many better value and really good stopovers out there. Breakfast buffet was good though. Used to stay at novotels a lot but won't bother again.
We decided (family of 4) to stop in amboise on the way back to uk from south of France. Booked Novotel as it was a good price. Room a good size for 4. Clean and modern. Sofa turned into two good sized singles for the children. That was the good. Our experience of the service was poor particularly at the bar. I complained at reception, they were not interested. Restaurant manager was apologetic but after waiting for 15 mins to get a drink in a virtually empty bar my wife and i gave up and went to our room. Probably as well as watching the bar man pour 4 gin and tonics without measures, I think I would have got little gin. I also did not like the fact ice was added with a hand and not a scoop. We had an excellent meal, fab wine and great service IN AMBOISE TOWN CENTRE. My recommendation would be sleep only at the hotel and eat/drink in town. Sorry Novotel. Service is key.
This hotel is outside of Amboise, so requires a taxi to go in to town. There is plenty of free parking. The view from the patio is wonderful. We were with a tour group, so ate separately in a conference room. At dinner, the chicken was under-cooked. Breakfast was meek. Our bedroom was clean. Drains didn't drain well. Lots of families were here for summer vacation and used the billiard table in the lobby.
Stayed for three nights and found it to be perfectly acceptable. Room was spotlessly clean, well equipped and spacious. Staff we encountered were polite and friendly enough. Beds were nice and comfortable plus theres an in room chiller and safe. Free wifi though it is a bit slow. Didn't eat here though the restaurant itself looks nice. Plenty of car parking and the hotel is well signposted and easy to find.
We stopped in Amboise for an overnight stay on our way to the Dordogne region and this was a great place to stay. We arrived at the hotel really early (around Noon) because we were hoping on the off-chance that our room would be ready, but it wasn't so we headed to the town of Amboise for the afternoon. When we came back around 4pm, the guy at the front desk wasn't sure if our room was ready so we had to wait a bit and then finally got in. The room itself was great - queen size bed and then a little couch that pulled out to a single bed. The room was air conditioned, clean and modern. The next morning we went to check out and she said, okay so I have a few drinks from the bar last night and 2 breakfasts this morning. Well, we hadn't been to the bar or had breakfast so clearly, someone had charged the food to our room (I assume accidentally). She asked me a few times and I explained that we had not eaten so after probing, she took my word for it and only charged me for the room, which I appreciated.
Excellent value at about 118 Euro per night for an Executive room. This includes a wide selection of free drinks from the small minibar and a Nespresso machine. Hotel is clean with helpful friendly staff. Spacious grounds with small pool, two tennis courts and mini golf. Great lawns for dogs! Restaurant not great, better to walk into town about 20 minutes or so away. Quite a steep hill on the way back. Many coach tours use it so on the downside not much atmosphere , on the upside you often have the place almost to yourself whilst they visit the chateaux.
Perfect overnight stop. Staff very keen to help but one a bit over zealous and took away my tea and orange juice while I was getting rest of my breakfast 😑 Hot Breakfast items wasn't that hot, probably why loads left on trays. Evening meal was perfect. Evening meal was perfect a good choice.
