We really enjoyed our ten-day stay at this hotel, and can recommend it to other travelers. The highlight, of course are the staff. It looks like the hotel is run solely by females – the receptionists, housekeeping, cafeteria personnel, all are friendly, hospitable and competent women. I want to specifically single out Aurelie and Alexandra, who were very sympathetic with our problems which were not related to the hotel. They helped us track and receive our delayed baggage and while doing it, were super patient, courteous and accommodating. They greeted us with cordial smile every day and asked if we need any help. They went far beyond their prescribed duties to make our stay pleasant. Ladies, please accept our sincere gratitude! As you know by now, the hotel is located in a close proximity to the Tours train station, which was a deciding factor for us when we researched other options. We knew we would be travelling by train daily and wanted to stay close to the station. It is about eight-minute walk to Gare de Tours. The historic part of the city is not too far either, probably another 10-15-minutes walk from the train station. I’d say, the location is quite convenient. I felt the neighborhood was safe, but we always returned to the hotel before the dark, so I can’t truly access how safe it’s at night. Our room on the second floor was very spacious and comfortable. Two beds, two chairs, separate bath and toilet, and the door opening to the deck facing the rail tracks. I specifically asked for a quiet room, and when I saw it was facing the train tracks, I got concerned. But it worked out fine, partially because the trains were not running due to the strike, and also because when they did run, they made very little noise. Our room was cleaned daily, just like we expected. The towels were changed and bottled water and tea/coffee supplies replenished. The entire floor was so quiet. We even thought the hotel had a low occupancy, until we saw a bunch of people at breakfast. Speaking of which, we had a daily breakfast in the nice room on the ground level. The selection was limited, but adequate. My only suggestion for further improvement would be to have eggs in some shape or form. Scrambled eggs served there were made of powdered eggs, and we wished there were at least some fresh hard boiled eggs instead. Otherwise, we enjoyed the fresh OJ, coffee, breads, cold-cuts and cheese. To summarize our experience, I will stress once again that the best part of the hotel are the delightful employees. We travel a lot, and know very well that the personnel makes a big difference. The location is great if you plan on taking trains/buses to chateaux. In terms of quietness, I’d give it a high ranking, as it doesn’t have rowdy young people like the budget Ibis next door. It’s mostly families and business folks. The cleanliness is totally sufficient, at least in our room, common areas and breakfast facility. Please ignore the petty complains about the thin towels and lack of exercise facilities. No, there isn’t a gym, sauna or lap pool, but then again, the hotel never advertised them. And no, it is not a luxury accommodation, and it's reflected in the price tag. They will deliver what they describe on their website and go above and beyond to accommodate you. So, book with confidence.
A very pleasant hotel in a good situation. However, the room was a tad too warm and we couldn't find how to turn the heat down. Also the bar is probably the smallest one I have ever seen and not well stocked. If you want a drink it is the receptionists job to serve and if she is busy it can be difficult. There isn't a bar nearby.
The hotel seemed to be run by very professional, helpful and friendly females. Nice welcome on arrival and we had a room on the 8th floor which was large with a very comfortable bed. No noise problems and interesting to watch all the trains in the very busy station coming and going (sad!). Nice little bar on the ground floor, attended by the receptionists. Cannot fault this hotel at all and would definitely return. The station itself is beautiful from the outside and restaurants just 10/15 minutes from the hotel. Free parking, which is unusual in so many European hotels these days. Did not have breakfast so cannot comment on food. There is no safe in the room but there is a fridge. If I had one comment to make it would be that the bath towels are small but if that is the only gripe, then it makes for a very good hotel. Thank you ladies for making our stay so enjoyable in January. It rained last time we were in Tours and it rained this time. However, that did not particularly bother us especially as since we returned to the U.K. it has not stopped. Thank you Mercure Tours female staff and also thank you Mercure for allowing our labrador to holiday with us.
My husband and I stayed at the Mercure one night on our back home to Britain on 28th December 2017. I was a bit apprehensive after having read some negative comments but I had chosen this hotel because it offered secure parking. Yes, the hotel is not the most attractive looking hotel in the world but after all, it is next to the main railway station amongst many other similar looking modern hotels from other well known chains. First impression was good as we were welcomed by two very friendly receptionists. I guess we were lucky as our room was situated on the top floor so even though we were on the side of the railway station, we slept very well and I am a light sleeper. The room was clean, functional with tea/coffee facilities and a small bathroom with a bath. The room which was a standard double was not huge but fine for one night. The room was well heated and the bed was comfortable. We had breakfast the next morning. The dinning room lacked a bit of atmosphere but the continental style buffet breakfast was plentiful, delicious freshly baked cakes/bread and real orange juice. The hotel is only a 10 minute walk from the town centre ideal for shopping/restaurants and its historic centre with its medieval squares and cathedral.
On our way back to Calais . Stopped here . Dogs no fuss and no problem at all . Staff friendly and efficient . Breakfast simple but ample in small but attractive dining area . All Very clean . Large bathroom with good shower . Next to the station . Could hear a little noise from the trains . Not a problem though . Parking right outside and free .
Our group of three was delayed in arriving in Tours without a reservation. We had had a pleasant experience at a Mercure hotel in Paris, so when we saw Mercure in Tours, we immediately went in to see if we could secure a room. Although it was very late--about 11:30 pm--the staff was very accommodating, finding us a very comfortable room, recommending some places to look for a meal, and offering to open up the bar if we wished to have a drink. At check-in we were offered a free full-menu breakfast the next morning, all because we were "senior citizens!" The food was delicious, the choices extensive. We cannot thank the staff at the Mercure Tours Centre Gare enough for a wonderful stay. We would highly recommend the Mercure to anyone traveling through Tours.
Spent 4 nights here recently as part of a Riviera travel group. Totally agree with lynncroft100 review in August. The only good point was that the receptionists seemed friendly. Otherwise a depressing ,grey modernist building at the back of the train station. Our room was small ,stuffy and noisy facing the main road. rooms facing the railway tracks were also noisy according to other guests. We asked twice for extra pillows but none were forthcoming. Bar is small and totally depressing as were the breakfast facilities =v. limited choice and not even toast! Breakfast arrangements were also chaotic and we had to fit in to a 30 min. time slot due to other groups staying there. This is certainly not a 4 star hotel and I will complain to Riviera travel for misrepresentation!
My sisters and I had stayed a little too long at a chateau in the Loire Valley and had not reserved a room for the evening. Little did we know how difficult it would be after 9:00PM in France to find a room for the three of us. Mercure Hotel not only provided us a very clean and nice room for a very reasonable price with us just dropping in at about 11:30PM, they had very kind and knowledgeable staff to help us. We got suggestions for getting a meal at mid-night and they would open the bar for us if needed. The beds were comfortable, space amble (considering there were 3 of us) and the bathroom very clean, lots of space and a good shower. If that weren't enough they offered us a free breakfast when we checked in as all of us were older than 62. ... and what a breakfast it was! The "cafe" alone made getting up for this breakfast more than worth while! Great eggs, croissants, yogurts, fresh OJ and plenty of help if needed. My sister that pretty much never eats breakfast got up for this one and left full!!! We cannot thank Mercure's staff enough for rescuing what appeared to be a very disastrous night's accommodations and turning it into a very good night's sleep and one of our best mornings. Thanks to all of you for your great work!
Stayed here as part of a Riviera Travel group holiday and was sorely disappointed with this hotel, its facilities, its location, and its breakfast. Astonished that it is even classed as a 4*! Who wants spend their holiday in close proximity to a train station with railway lines directly under their room with the subsequent noise of trains from 5am til midnight. The beds were like bricks, the towels thin, and toiletries consisted of tiny bar of soap and shower gel in a dispenser on the wall. A kettle was provided and also a dirty cracked cup! Breakfast was very poor with limited choice and budget ingredients. Our group was served breakfast in a separate room and were not allowed in the regular breakfast area. So I presume this is down to some cheap arrangement with Riviera Travel, who should be ashamed of themselves for even putting this awful hotel on their itinerary. It was also a long walk, in a not very salubrious area, to find an evening meal. So, unless you are an avid train spotter or need to catch an early morning train from the station, avoid this hotel!
The hotel is good: I've been in a double room for disables with my sister for three nights. Clean room, soft beds, clean bathroom, the towels were changed everyday and everything was at its place. Best position in the center of the city. The staff is composed by all young people, everyone was kind. The only problem has been the breakfast, for we were a group and group breakfast, I don't know why, is different from the one for individual guests. Really little breakfast, good but poor. Why these differences? In the end anyway I'm enough happy about this hotel.
