About this property
Amazing Durango area log home on 35 acre farm. Stunning mountain views, hot tub.
Welcome to Lucky Elk Ranch, a stunning 4000 sf log home on a 35-acre working hay ranch with breathtaking mountain views. Enjoy the luxurious amenities, including a gourmet kitchen, hot tub, library, and gaming spaces. Deep in the heart of 'Away From it All', yet just 20 minutes from Old Town Durango and minutes from the airport. Experience world-class activities year-round, from hiking and rafting to skiing and sightseeing. Let Lucky Elk be your home base for an unforgettable Durango vacation.
The space: This stunning, newly renovated, 4500+ sf hand-hewn log home sits on a sweeping 35 acre working hay ranch with amazing views of the majestic San Juan Mountains. We're out in the country under big, dark skies, yet only 20 minutes from Old Town Durango and only 7 minutes from the Durango airport.
The ranch is perfect for family gatherings and reunions, couples and families traveling together, corporate retreats, workshops and outdoor and sporting enthusiasts.
One of the many things that makes Lucky Elk unique is the flexibility of the accommodations and capacity. There are two configurations that you can rent...The Main Ranch House and what we affectionately call The Whole Ranchilada.
The Main Ranch House can accommodate up to 9 guests total in 5 beds across 4 bedrooms and 3 1/2 bathrooms and is the primary rental space for the pricing listed.
The Whole Ranchilada is The Main Ranch House PLUS The Falcon's Nest Guest Suite located above the huge attached garage.
The Falcon's Nest is a gorgeous, fully renovated and luxuriously appointed 600 sf studio space featuring a king bed and queen futon that can accommodate an additional 4 guests. It features its own private entrance but can also be connected to the Main Ranch House via the family room as desired.
We call it 'The Falcon's Nest' because during renovations, we found and rescued a days-old Peregrine Falcon chick that had fallen out of a nest in the attic space into the studio through an open wall. 'Perry Grin' the baby falcon survived the initial fall and was in our care for three days until we found a falconer in the area to give her the ongoing specialized care she needed. We're thrilled to know that she thrives as a strong adult to this day...
The Falcon's Nest is rented as an add-on to the main ranch house and is NOT rented separately so there will never be strangers in that space. Only guests from your party.
Let's cover the Main Ranch House and then details of the Falcon's Nest and you can decide what combination best suits your needs...
The Main Ranch House: This gorgeous 4 bedroom, 3 1/2 bathroom home is the epitome of rustic elegance in the rocky mountains and features a large gourmet kitchen with everything a discerning cook could need, including ample custom counter space, a huge GE Monogram fridge, KitchenAide in-wall ovens and a brand new 48" gas cooktop all surrounded by two gorgeous stone fireplaces.
There are breathtaking mountain views from the master bedroom and bath, formal dining room, formal lofted living room, huge family room, sweeping back patio and newly installed 7 seat hot tub. The main floor master suite features a gas fireplace with remote, king bed with a custom log headboard. The centerpiece of the stunning master bathroom is a brand new 66” cast iron clawfoot bathtub where you can soak in both the bubbles and the incredible mountain views. This luxurious space also features a stone-tiled walk-in shower, generous walk-in closet, double sink vanity and a full laundry.
The sprawling downstairs area also features a cozy breakfast nook with skylights and views of the beautiful front yard and gardens. Adjacent to the kitchen is an inviting formal dining room featuring a hand hammered round copper table for 6 backed by a massive stone fireplace.
Rounding out this floor to the West is the formal lofted living room with yet another massive stone fireplace and vaulted ceilings lofted by the library upstairs. This inviting space features cozy seating a 50" wall-mounted smart TV and of course, those amazing views of the San Juans. On the East side of this floor is the spacious family room with floor to ceiling windows, comfortable seating, games, a 65" smart TV and again...the views.
The 2nd floor is built for snoozing and relaxing after a full day of Durango area activities and features a large king bed suite and two queen bed rooms, one of which features a single-over-queen bunk bed. These two queen bedrooms each feature super cool 3rd floor 'kids loft hangout areas' for video or old-school gameplay. All rooms have large box fans for extra airflow and white noise.
Just to clarify the bathroom layout on the 2nd floor...it's a 'Jack and Jill' style layout. There are two separate toilet/vanity/dressing areas on either side of the shared bathing space which features a super cool galvanized farm tub and large walk-in rain-style shower. And of course the doors on each side lock for privacy. Just want to be clear so there's no confusion about how it's laid out.
Enjoy some quiet time in the comfortable, well-stocked library space overlooking the main downstairs living room and...again with those amazing mountain views.
The 2nd floor also features a comfortable sitting room with a 55" wall-mounted SmartTV. If you're so inclined, cozy up with a movie or feel free to bring your gaming platform of choice and plug in.
While many of our guests come to Lucky Elk to ‘unplug’ and enjoy the peaceful seclusion of the ranch, Starlink high-speed Internet access throughout the home allows you to stay connected as much as you choose.
One of the things our guests love and have commented to us about is how the ranch house is laid out in such a way that you have great communal gathering spaces but plenty of room to spread out and not be on top of each other. The huge communal kitchen and dining spaces are perfectly balanced with nooks and spaces like separate living rooms on each end of the home on the main floor, the library, the tv nook on the 2nd floor and the two hideaway kid's lofts above the two central bedrooms give everyone plenty of space to hang together or take some time alone as you need.
Have a furry friend? We do accept up to two dogs with a $100 pet fee and there is a HUGE (well over 1/2 acre) back yard and it is ALL fully fenced so your dog(s) will have plenty of room to run! If you have additional pets, reach out us directly to discuss.
Children are welcome at Lucky Elk and we have done our best to be kid-friendly. That said, it's important for parents to note that the ranch is NOT 'childproofed'. For example, there are stairs with no child gates, banisters on the 2nd floor that little ones could wiggle through if unattended, a hot tub with a cover, but no fence and two kids lofts with ladders that are for ages 6 and up only. If you're bringing kids, you agree that younger children will need to be supervised and all times to ensure safety. A Pack N Play is available upon request.
Stunning landscaping encircles huge decks both front and back with...you guessed it...those amazing mountain views to the north with ample comfortable seating to enjoy the unforgettable sunrises or sunsets. You can also choose to enjoy a blanket of stars while luxuriating in the newly installed hot tub with up to 6 of your closest friends.
A former working elk ranch fully surrounded by 7’ fencing, Lucky Elk Ranch is a working hay farm that currently produces some of the best quality hay in all of Southwestern Colorado, sought after by the most discerning horse owners in the region.
The pricing in this listing is for the Main Ranch House ONLY. The Falcon's Nest can be added to your stay for an additional nightly charge, which varies with the rate for the main house. If you're interested in this special space, just let us know in your message and we'll provide you with a quote prior to booking.
The Falcon's Nest Guest Studio: On the main level of The Falcon's Nest, the newly renovated bathroom features a huge, tiled walk-in rain shower and brand new appointments throughout.
Up the stairs, you're greeted by a spacious foyer/sitting area with a dresser and a small library of western novels to feed your inner cowboy's imagination.
Through the main privacy door and you've entered a spacious guest studio with a luxurious king bed, elegant, comfortable furnishings, a complete, fully stocked kitchen with gourmet appliances, huge center island with stunning mountain views and everything you need if you prefer to cook on your own.
There is a 65" SmartTV on a rolling rack so you can watch from the couch or roll it over to the foot of the king bed. A comfortable queen sized futon for extra guests and right sized desk if work can't wait rounds out the space. As with the main ranch house, there is high-speed Starlink wifi Internet connectivity throughout the space. This is an ideal spot for those in your party who might want a little extra space to themselves.
As anyone who knows the Durango area can attest, there is an endless array of world-class activities to enjoy here year round. Whether it’s hunting, fishing, hiking, rafting, mountain biking, 4 wheeling, train riding, festival going or sightseeing some of the most breathtaking scenery on the planet in the summer or world-class skiing and the myriad of winter activities that abound, some of the very best in the world are found right here in or near Durango.
Lucky Elk Ranch home is located on 3.5 of the 35 acres of this gorgeous farm. These 3.5 manicured acres sit at the top of a hill overlooking the valley and farmlands below with Durango and the San Juan Mountains beyond. It is quiet, peaceful, serene, expansive and rejuvenating.
Deep in the heart of ‘Away From it All’ but right next door to ‘Having it All’, let Lucky Elk Ranch be your home base while enjoying all that this amazing playground has to offer.
Lucky Elk Ranch…your refuge in the country from the deluge of the city.
Guests can expect to find free WiFi and a Smart TV with a DVD player. Other standard amenities include a kitchen, a washing machine, and 3.5 bathrooms.

Beautiful, peaceful and wanted to stay longer
We had the most relaxing enjoyable time at this lodge like house. It had enough space for us to have space but also family areas we could watch movies or play games. We love the chickens and the farm fresh eggs are such a wonderful treat. We had fun feeding the chickens and visiting with the Mules. The interior is decorated beautifully and the clawfoot bathtub in the master is Divine! We hot-tubbed at night and saw all the stars. It was exactly what this family with our adult children needed to reconnect and re charge. Chad the host is so lovely he made us feel like family. We will be back. Thank you!!

Thanksgiving
This property is beyond special, it’s not your ordinary rental. This is a home! Well decorated with special art painted from their family members, interesting pieces that you could tell were collected after many years. Warm and inviting with endless accommodations. We hosting thanksgiving at a nearby ranch owned by my partner and rented this for family overflow. However, it was so special, I would love to just rent it and entertain there just to show off its beauty. It was great for my 81 year old mom to have everything on the first floor, so she didn’t have to go up and down the stairs. And my college age kids, stayed upstairs with plenty of room to spread out and feel spoiled. The host and hostess were so accommodating and kind. They even had farm fresh eggs for us to cook in the very well appointed kitchen. I would definitely stay at this cozy and charming home again!! Thank you again Chance and Elizabeth for having us in your home and making this Thanksgiving memory unforgettable!

Country Home
The home worked out perfectly for our group. We traveled with family our main goal was spending time together. The patio and backyard are both a perfect way to start (coffee) and end (wine) the day. Our dogs also enjoyed the large yard and the freedom to run and lounge.
We cooked a lot of our meals (for 9). The kitchen had everything we needed.
The drive into Durango took about 25 minutes. We made the trip once a day and were able to enjoy the area too.
Overall everyone enjoyed the house and it worked as a great home base for us.

Weekend get away
I recently had the pleasure of staying at a charming log cabin retreat located on a picturesque hay meadow near Durango, Colorado.
From the start, the hosts were fantastic, offering great communication that made our check-in process seamless and stress-free. Their attention to detail and genuine hospitality set the tone for a wonderful stay.
The cabin itself is a delightful mix of rustic charm and modern comfort. The spacious interior is thoughtfully furnished, but one of the highlights is undoubtedly the large back porch. We spent countless hours here, soaking in the quiet atmosphere and marveling at the spectacular views of the surrounding meadows and mountains. It was the perfect spot for morning coffee, afternoon reading, and evening stargazing.
Overall, this log cabin retreat near Durango is a gem. Its serene setting, combined with excellent amenities and stunning views, makes it an ideal destination for anyone looking to unwind and reconnect with nature. We can't wait to come back!

Family Vacation
We had a great time at Lucky Elk! We stayed for 10 days, and enjoyed every minute. It sits on a large property far enough from your neighbors with alot of open space surrounding. The property owners live about 5 min away and will come by daily to maintain the property and tend to the chicken coop that is nearby. They gave us some fresh eggs from their chickens that were very good. They are very attentive hosts. The house itself has all the essentials and is very cozy. This is a great place for a large family to vacation. There is a LARGE fenced in yard for your dogs to play-mine loved it. It is a place I would definitely visit again!

Amazing house and property near Durango
Spectacular home! We enjoyed our stay here very much. The house is a beautiful 2 story log house with a master suite on the ground floor, remaining bedrooms upstairs. The furnishings are first class. Nice art work throughout. It is located in farmland East of Durango in rolling hills of Juniper with great mountain vistas.
The house is well stocked with appliances, cooking gear, kitchen utensils, and basic supplies. Games galore. Two living rooms with t.v.'s. The beds are very comfortable. There are many areas for people to separate to when needing their own space as well as plenty of space for everyone to come together.
The master bath is dreamy. Washer & Dryer in the master bathroom (isolated and out of the way). The grounds are nicely manicured and maintained. Lots of flowers. Hummingbirds ever present on the feeders on the back porch. A large hot tub on the back deck. Nice grill for cooking. This house really has it all.
We brought our two dogs with us. They were happy campers. The back yard is a half acre, fenced. Grass surface. Perfect for games of frisbee or playing with a ball. The dogs slept well.
Durango is 20 to 25 minutes away depending on traffic. The pace of life at the house is a welcome state of quiet relative to the frenzy of town.
Chance & Elizabeth were great to work with. They live nearby and can jump in when needed. The photos on VRBO are an accurate reflection of what you will find upon arrival. Book this house, thank me later.
