Quiet Cottage on sandy beach of the Chesapeake Bay
Try'n Rest In the Historic Northern Neck of Virginia
Try'n Rest. The name says it all, really. This vintage 4 bedroom cottage, with a new family room addition, sits on the shore at the mouth of the Potomac River overlooking the Chesapeake Bay. Try'n Rest has a fully equipped kitchen, central heat and air, 2 full baths and a large screened in porch. It can accommodate up to 8 guests. A panoramic view of the Bay is enjoyed from the living room, porch and front bedrooms.
From the back door, walk 50’ to a large raised deck which overlooks the Bay and the broad white sand beach. Lying around with a good book is enough activity for some, but for those who prefer moving about, there are plenty of outdoor adventures. You can: - fish off the shore for spot and croaker - take long walks down the beach - stick the crab pot in, out past the first sandbar - enjoy swimming or using our floats - hunt for treasures on the beach - play croquet or horseshoes in the large back yard - Admire the area wildlife (dolphins, skates, foxes, turkeys, deer, bald eagles and osprey, hummingbirds etc) Public boat launching sites are within a 15 minute drive at the Great Wicomico River and the Little Wicomico River.
Try n Rest has no TV and no Wifi, as we find this to be a place to enjoy the Bay, games, books, and conversation.
You have selected an area not only steeped in early Virginia history, but also with memorable restaurants, such as historic 18th Century Hughlett’s Tavern and waterfront seafood restaurants in Reedville. A fifteen minute drive from Try'n Rest takes you to Reedville (check out the Victorian houses and the Waterman’s Museum); a thirty minute ride reaches Irvington, and White Stone (towns with resort shopping and restaurants). Winery tours are in the area. You will discover Antique stores and souvenir shops all through the area. Public golf courses are available at Tides Inn Resort and in the town of Callao. Finally, from Reedville, you can board a Tangier Island or Wicomico River Cruise.
Couples tell us this quiet and beautiful spot is a perfect place for a romantic getaway or to celebrate an anniversary.
This is a great location for kids! The wide, sandy, safe beach leads to water with soft, sandy bottom that very gradually gets deep. Sandbars provide splashy water play with water less than 1 foot deep. Numerous indoor and yard games are provided. Seaside wildlife abounds. The cottage allows for "free range parenting" at it's best!
Try'n Rest is located 2.5 hours southeast of Northern Virginia/Washington D.C. area, or 2 hours northeast of Richmond, Virginia.

A true delight!
Enchanting cottage right on the water. Rest, restore and be in awe of the world again. Gorgeous sunrises on your own sandy beach right out the back door. Beautiful night skies to see and name all the stars. A screened in back porch with a the view that calls you every waking moment. Butterflies, hummingbirds, eagles, dolphins, and cranes are just a few of the peaceful passers by we shared the week with. We cried when we left, can’t wait to come back!

Great stay on the Bay
Our family enjoyed a wonderful stay at the cottage. A very peaceful family getaway, the house is very charming in a beautiful spot on the water. We enjoyed just sitting on the screened in porch and deck, wading and fishing in the Bay, and taking a drive into Reedville for dinner. It was a great break from our everyday busy lives and to connect with family. The house has a well stocked kitchen, laundry, games, and beach chairs. Would love to visit again.

Private Escape
I booked this property for a short getaway and what sold me was the beach access! It did not disappoint. My kids loved being down by the water and close to the house. The water was clean and the perfect temperature and the sand was wonderful for building sand castles. The house had comfy beds and everything we needed for two adults and three kids to feel comfortable and relaxed. My only feedback is cell service was worse than I expected, but the owners did make that note when I booked the property. Also the bugs were awful...we all came home with the worst bugs bites from being outside, even after we used bug spray! All said, I recommend this property and will be going back.

Charming Cottage
House is charming albeit rustic. The best part is the screened in porch. We grilled all our dinners and ate on the porch. There is a bug problem and several traps all over the house. Mostly ants. Some evidence of mice. And the house wasn't as clean as I would have expected. Dusty and I found trash behind one of the beds. But if you don't mind it being a little rustic, then you will have a perfect and serene vacation. We brought our own kayaks and floats for the river. Sarah is very responsive and a lovely host. It's nice that linens and bath towels are provided. It would be nice if there was a trash receptacle outside too, so you don't have to make several trips to the dump once the kitchen trash bin fills.

Peaceful
We absolutely adore this rental! The location is stunning, the home embraces you with its 100 plus year arms and it is so tranquil.
Be certain to feed the hummingbirds while there. They put on quite a show all week and we loved watching them.
Sarah, host of the cottage, had great communication with our family and made checking in a breeze. Thanks for sharing your family’s home with us. We will return!!!

Perfect Vacation
We absolutely adored this home! It certainly is a charming cottage with what seems to be original features (almost all wooden planking), but the decor is modern, colorful and fun. The set up is very comfortable for a family. We also had dinner almost every night on the screened in porch, where we enjoyed every beautiful sunset. We liked that there is not any WIFI or television - allowed us to enjoy each others company and the gorgeous setting.
The fact that you are steps away from the private beach made this trip so relaxing. We brought our paddleboard and found that the water was just perfect. My 1-year old loved running up and down the beach and swimming. There are multiple sandbars which is fun.
The owners were very quick to respond, and gave a comprehensive letter of explanations and recommendations for the area. We will be back next year and hopefully many other years to come!

Beautiful waterfront location
The house is exactly as described. A beachfront cottage rental surrounded by private homes. It was perfect for my family during COVID, since so private and remote. No crowds and the house was clean and comfortable. The owners were also very responsive. I would stay again.

Sleeps 8 but tight
It was a tight squeeze filling the house to capacity. All the jellyfish at the beach was a disappointment because there is nothing else to do in the area. I rented this place banking on being in the water all day with the kids and that didn’t happen. I think this place is better suited for couples just trying to relax and literally do nothing. Sarah was great at communicating though. Very nice lady.

Crabtime Fun
Overall we had a really great time. The cottage was clean, well equipped and nicely decorated. We had a great time with one of the neighbours, who teached us how to eat bluecrab. We caught some crab with the trap ,which is there at the cottage, but released them to the sea. We had a relaxing time there, watching the sunrise, despite the reality that we had to get up very early. The beach is very nice to take a little walk. Looking forward to come back one day.

Charming house with a perfect beach for littler kids
The house itself is just adorable with everything beach-themed. It’s location is amazing, especially because the beach you walk down to is shallow with very small waves. We loved it!

Relaxation
We absolutely loved our mini vacation. Lovely home, quiet, perfect weather and great scenery. We will be looking forward to booking next year!! The kids enjoyed crabbing and trying out the catch. The beach was amazing my suggestion is to add another step at the bottom which I believe you once had. It was quite a leap down or a step up to the stairs. The neighbors were very nice and helpful with the dolphin experience that we had. That is still the talk from the kids when they are asked what they saw on there vacation. Until next time -Thank You for letting us use your home!!

Perfect get away
Thoroughly enjoyed our visit. Relaxing. The water was perfect. NO JELLYFISH:).
The Crazy crab was really good seafood when you don’t want to cook.
We took a sunset cruise at Captain Billy’s Charter and we cannot recommend him highly enough. So fun and he’s just a great guy.
We crabbed and fished (there were supplies there to use) and while there wasn’t enough for this party of five to eat it was fun to do.
We swam daily. You can walk with your kids (mine are 6, 6 and 8 yrs old) to the Sandbar about a hundred yards out. The house had plenty of beach toys and chairs and umbrellas and floats!
The house was charming and perfect for us. There was nothing missing. We used the grill we ate on the screened in porch. We napped. We enjoyed the games and puzzles at the house (there were plenty of books to tho we had our own).
It was a lovely vacation and we will definitely be back soon!
The owner and his daughter were easy to get in touch with and we can’t say enough good things about Try N Rest:)

Piece of heaven!
We stayed in other beach locations before but this was the best of all. The house is perfect size, with everything you need and even more. Just imagine to wake up in the morning with a cip of coffee and walk 50 steps to a quite beach. It's all that you can ask. The kids enjoy the water all day , and the adults only duty were to watch them for the beach chair. Amazing!

Peaceful waterfront retreat
We thoroughly enjoyed our extended weekend at "Try N Rest". Unplugging the kids to enjoy the fishing and crabbing was well worth the travel. We even got to enjoy the eclipse on the beach! The cottage is just enough for what you need. We even cooked our crab catch! The screen porch was enjoyed every morning and evening. It was plenty big enough for the six of us. We had to swim around the jellyfish but that didn't stop us. Clean sand and quiet surroundings. Thank you for sharing your cottage with us and accommodating our requests. We even appreciated the "heads up" call for the thunderstorm that rolled through on Friday night!

Great House, Great View, Great Beach
This house keeps the charm of old paneling and floors combined with a modern kitchen and bathrooms. Panoramic view of the bay from all the front rooms and the screened porch. The house is well equipped for everything. We cooked and ate crabs for two nights. Friendly neighbors. We practically had the beach to ourselves. It was great not having a television. I had no problem with cell service. Verizon seems to work well here. Hope to come back for a week next time.

Perfect get away!!!
Try-n-rest was a great getaway!!! Perfect accommodations, clean and well stocked with amazing views and tons of character. We watched an amazing storm come over the bay and also had a picture perfect day on the secluded beach. The owner was super helpful and was there for any questions. We hope to make this an annual trip and we leave with some great memories!😃

Cozy cottage
Our family of five had a wonderful week here. The owner had great communication with us, and that was reassuring. We felt welcomed as soon as we got there: the air conditioning was already blowing, the cottage was quite clean and the linens pretty and inviting! The cottage itself is positioned on a lovely spot at the mouth of the Potomac, but we were very much on the Bay. There is a lovely screened in porch in which to watch the sunrise. Every morning we woke up to Osprey diving for fish and dolphins going by! The little beach in front of the cottage is as pretty as the picture looks. It is a very quiet neighborhood. We felt like we owned the shoreline! There was only one issue the entire week and that was the jellyfish. They made it impossible to go swimming. We waded some, but this we did on high alert. This was a disappointment for sure. We got the impression that this is a fact of life if you live on the Bay. We went to a few nature preserves and a beach in the area and these were all populated with many jellyfish. We found plenty of other things to do, of course, but the kids had the snorkels and goggles ready to go. We did drive to Virginia Beach one day for the Aquarium and beaches. It was 2 1/2 hours, but we knew we were going to have one excursion. It was worth the trip. The highlights of our stay were creating memories playing croquet and board games with the kids ( no wifi or tv was perfect) and enjoying the sites of the shoreline. It is absolutely a perfect spot for a couple to enjoy a lovely time away. It looks like there were some wineries in the area, some antiquing, and only an 1 1/2 hours away from Williamsburg and Richmond. A family with children, who want to swim, maybe check into the seasonal trends of jellyfish on the bay? I would think it fluctuates.

Loved the beach setting
Loved beach setting for the grandkids, would have been better if not for the jellyfish. Fishing and crabbing was a bust. Only suggestion I have for the place would be to upgrade your pot/pans not the greatest to cook in or cook for a family of 7.
