Upon first arrival we were greeted by elephants, hippos and crocs on the amazing property, super close to Kruger Park. Breakfast was excellent (although not the take-away breakfast to the Kruger park); dinner was unfortunately not up to standards. Rooms were great (little bungalows with space for a double bed down stairs and two single beds upstairs) but no screens and no wifi. Two pools were kids had lots of fun.
I recently stayed at this hotel and have to say we were quite disappointed! Although the hotel is beautiful and is everything it says it is, it was let down massively by the staff! Some were lovely but the majority were miserable, took ages to serve food and the so called 'head' receptionist was rude and arrogant. Absolutely no care for guests at all, unhelpful and talked to us as if we were stupid on multiple occasions! And when we went to complain to him about something he'd wrongly told us he laughed at us and denied all knowledge. Having someone like this as first point of call did nothing good for this hotel at all and sadly made the end of our holiday very disappointing, will not be returning or recommending.
We stayed here just one night in the lodges looking out over the river and were not disappointed with Hippos wandering across the lawn right up to the Lodge balconies in the evening. The restaurant also looks out over the river and you can watch the Hippos while eating Dinner (we didn't see any at breakfast). Not only that the food is truly excellent with many South African game offerings. Probably worth going just for the restaurant but even better if staying overnight as well. We stayed there following a late afternoon flight into Mpumalunga and before driving on into the Kruger the following day. Would be happy to go back. The Lodges are huge well provided for. The only issue is that as they are thatched there may be things falling from the ceiling with the insects that live there. They don't hide or duck this and you are warned about it and they will change sheets etc. If needed.
We stayed here in several garden chalets for 1 night ++++ Lovely riverside location Can see elephants and hippos from restaurant deck Spacious clean rooms facing the garden Restaurant is ok with good pizzas ---- Constant noise from route 40 which passes next to resort Caters to big groups Need to pay extra for hot chocolate at breakfast! Overall, too expensive for what it offers.
My wife and I stopped at Hippo Hollow as part of a tour of South Africa for a couple of nights a couple of weeks ago and we weren't disappointed at all in any aspect of the hotel. The staff were really friendly and helpful especially those behind the bar. The place was spotlessly clean. We used the lodge as a base to see the wildlife in the Kruger which is only minutes away. Two small hippos dutifully appeared around 8pm on both nights and grazed quite happily on the grass in front of the hotel after emerging from the river. Highly recommended to anyone thinking of staying there.
We really, really wanted to love Hippo Hollow. Our stay was quite short, although we tried to make the most of it. The facility certainly had some highlights, but it also left us a bit flat. The best highlight was the room. Each room appears to have its own name, tied to a local bird. We, fortuitously, were lodged in the Purple Heron. For those keeping track, I'm a bit obsessed with both purple and herons, and as that combination does not exist in the states, it was a welcome sign of our place there. The room was very comfortable, with great amenities and -- other than a lack of spaces to sit -- plenty of room for us. The much-discussed "see hippos on the field by night" was, combined with the quality of the meal, a lot of the disappointment. We had prepaid for the dinner, but in booking the meal there was no description of the option. We were limited to only the buffet, which was a serious letdown from previous lodging buffets. We could order beer and wine from the menu, but were not allowed to order additional or different a la carte items. Clarification about what is included in the prepaid dinner, and flexibility about adding items from the menu, would have been very welcome. There were several rushes of energy around seeing a hippo during our leisurely dinner, and staff attempted to help spot the creatures, but despite several attempts including with a scope, I was not able to see the hippo that was being talked about. Adding to the frustration were various heavy-smoking tables near us on the patio. Just something to be aware about: despite the name, do not presuppose hippos. You can easily find them in the Kruger the next day. Breakfast was more promising -- not the best, but we knew what we were getting and it was well prepared. In addition, the dawn was marked by a wide range of bird activity, both near the restaurant and around the grounds, and the combination of song and sight was very welcome. Oddly, a peahen and peacock wander the grounds, noisily, and felt out of step with the more natural wildlife. A final note: be ready to encounter large tour busses, especially in the morning. Hippo Hollow is clearly on the tourist route, and caters to large groups. Not a definite negative, but it was a bit jarring to wake to idling busses and large groups. Overall, we would return, but with more open eyes and a plan to order from the menu (which looked excellent) rather than proceeding with a mediocre buffet.
It looks just like you expect a picture perfect African lodge to look like. Our room was large with two twin beds and a small balcony with just enough room for two chairs, overlooking the pool (not heated) in the central quad. It didn't have a fridge (which would be an issue in the summer) but had tea/coffee. Good strong controllable shower. Food was excellent, the all you can eat buffet was excellent for R200. Not many people do breakfast due to the safari trips but they will make up a packed breakfast. We were served tea and coffee with SA rusks, an experience in themselves. Wi-fi is slow and patchy but to be expected due to its location and is that why you come here ?
We felt like we were staying at a 5 star lodge for a 3 star price! The food was delicious, the room was lovely -we arrived to an arrangement of flowers on our beds- and the shower was the best shower I've ever been in. It was beautiful and worked well, I didn't want to get out once I got in, but of course they do ask to conserve water. The staff was friendly and helpful. It was fun to see hippos come up onto the lawn while we ate at the restaurant each night and when we first arrived I couldn't get over the fact that we could see elephants walking in the distance from Elephant Whispers. It was too cold to use the pool when we arrived but it looked great. We had a refrigerator and couldn't have asked for more except the room had to be kept pretty chilly, so we did make use of the spare blankets. Also, it would have been nice to have more than one outlet to charge our cameras/phones, etc. It was a great location to get picked up from to do our Kruger National Park safaris. There wasn't really anything else to do outside of visiting Elephant Whispers in the area, other than a drive to the mall, so we did wind up just winding down our nights with wine each night, other than that we thought the location was nice. We appreciated using the computer for the internet in the front reception area outside, as well.
I went to hippo hollow for lunch. I had a hippo meat for the first time. The waiter recommended that I eat one. I'm glad that I did follow her recommendation. The rastuarant has a nice view ( facing a river/small stream and we were lucky to see elephants while we were eating from a distance)
Hippo Hollow is just an amazing place to stay while doing a Safari in Kruger. The room I had faced the larger pool. The room was on the large size, with a large bathroom which had a huge shower.. Very clean , yes they were basic but you had everything you needed even a good hairdryer. You had a television which had great movie channels also. Its the grounds that this hotel is situated on that makes it so special. I would sit on the restaurant veranda with the most amazing cocktail watching the sun go down when the Hippos would come down the river and exit onto the grass in front for a little nibble!!!! To the back you can see the Elephants from the Elephant sanctuary , you can book chalets here where you can sit on the porch and watch these Elephants. The staff are so friendly and the food is amazing from breakfast to their buffets to their al a cart menu.
