First you need to know that Hangzhou is one of China’s “most beautiful cities!” I stayed at the Sofitel hotel as a guest of the China Art Academy during the celebration of their 90th Anniversary. I’ve never stayed at a Sofitel and really didn’t know what to expect. The hotel was very nice and in a great location just across the street from the West Lake Park. West Lake Park turned out to be one of the best places for runners I’ve ever found. There is an approximately 7 mile loop around the lake that is tranquil and extraordinarily beautiful for a morning run. The air is clean and fresh and there are numerous, but not too many, other people getting their exercise there every morning. There were walkers, runners, people doing Tai Chi, people dancing, people playing drums, etc. Ok, now I’ve gotten the running thing out of the way. My room was beautiful with a beautifully designed bathroom complete with stand up shower and beautifully large tub, designed for a long hot, soaking bath. The bed was very comfortable with good pillows and linens. The room looked out over a residential condo development - so not a great view! There were also minor issues with the air system and its control. But, the weather was beautiful during my stay and I opened the windows the majority of my stay. The restaurant and bar at the hotel were very good. Now I have to tell a short story about one employee of the hotel named Hedy - not her Chinese name! How you feel about a hotel is encompassed in a very complex set of issues and conditions - the facility, the food, the location, etc. Many hotels forget about how one person can color your entire experience. That’s what Hedy did for me. I was in the lobby struggling with a currency exchange machine. Hedy apparently saw that I was experiencing difficulty and she came out from behind the front desk to help. She took the time to tell me how to operate the machine and then took care of changing the bills that I had stacked on the machine. She was lovely, caring, helpful, and just an example of how every employee of a hotel should work with guests! Employees like Hedy raise everyone’s experience and rating of any hotel! She gets the Sofitel at least one extra star! Thanks Hedy! Thanks CAA! If you visit Hangzhou the Sofitel is a great place to stay!
Fantastic location with west lake just across the street. Near shopping centers and 15mins walking distance from He Fang Street. Very comfortable stay! It was difficult traveling via taxi as most drivers aren’t familiar with the hotel.
I stayed at the Sofitel during my recent trip to Hangzhou. The location is walking distance to the Lake and to shops and restaurants. Unfortunately, those are the best attributes and they may be enough for you to want to stay there. The rooms and elevators smelled of cigarette smoke. The breakfast food was often cold and inedible. The staff was committed but not very sophisticated as evidenced by their challenges in finding taxis. The bed was hard as a rock. My room view was the apartment building across the street and neither windows were tinted for privacy. Modernizing the property would go a long way toward making it more appealing.
Hardware and software did not meet the standard of being a five-star hotel. Unsecured booking system and payment procedures - credit card guarantee not accepted at the time of reservation and only prepayment was allowed - not fair to pay in advance at higher flexible rate closer to the time of arrival. Inconvenient location to get to the hotel - difficult for travellers with luggage to walk from Hangzhou Railway Station as they have to go up and down through three disconnected underground tunnels without clear signage. But it is a good location to visit the Westlake. Front desk staff were unprofessional and not helpful in problem solving - pushing guests to move to another “so-called” five-star hotel upon my check-in. I refused due to influence in travelling schedule - struggled a room in the end after ~0.5 hour. I requested the front desk not to do any transaction on my credit card as a deposit since I would pay by another credit card. But I received an SMS from Card Centre that a transaction was made. Not cool enough centralised Air-Conditioning System - sweating at the time of check-in and hot inside the room because temperature cannot be adjusted inside the room - could not sleep well. Lack of confidence in staying at Sofitel again.
I had a very good experience during my holiday in this hotel in Hangzhou. It was a local Qingming-festival when i got the hotel, so there were a little bit many guests in the lobby when i did check out on 7th April. They were in line by the guide of a beautiful girl. When i waited in the line , the girl asked me if i need help and she told me some travel information of Hangzhou.During the talk i knew her name is Hedy, i was impressed with her sunshine smile, she was so kindly. What's more , the hotel have a good service, the room is pretty good and the breakfast was exceedingly.BTW the club lounge has a good view of Westlake. And i'd love to choose this hotel next time :-)
Alert !!! Hotel has no aircon. Even though putside temperature is almost 20 degrees, the management still do not turn on their air conditioning. Do not even think of staying here. You pay full price for a 5 star hotel but you get a 2-3 star level of service which do not Operate their air conditioner.
Travel to Westlake Hangzhou with kids and elderly. I am glad that our rooms was upgraded to luxury rooms which had standing shower that was very convenient for my parents. Luxury rooms was spacious. Some minor hiccup during check-in where there is charges just imposed for extra bed for children below 12 years old which was contradict with email communication when I did my booking. I am glad that they agreed to waive it for my 10 years old kid. Hotel location closed to famous restaurant and Westlake. My family and I enjoyed our stay at Sofitel Westlake Hangzhou.
It was true to the sofitel heritage (if there is one). Charming property near the Westlake but not on the waterfront unlike several other properties I caught on my morning jog. It has the heritage feel mainly on account of the designing and detailing of the interiors. The executive lounge of the 5th floor gives a good view of the lake but the terrace garden on the roof of the 6th floor offers a magnificent one. The room I stayed was on the city side but was still very quiet. The people I interacted were well trained and was genuine when attempting to address my queries. The room was a big one with a massive bathroom which has both a bath and a shower. I couldn't enjoy the complimentary happy hours in the executive lounge. Breakfast in the executive lounge was adequate though limited in terms of the range compared to the breakfast served in their restaurant. So unless someone wants to enjoy the view of the lake while enjoying their breakfast, I would recommend having their breakfast in the restaurant. It was a memorable stay and look forward to visiting again.
First of all the hotel is well located with walking distance to part of West Lake and close to many eateries. Check in was efficient and was give a room on the executive level. The room I was assigned to is well kept and look refurbished and was told by my colleagues some of the rooms are not renovated and conditions look old. Ventilation in the cafe is very bad and I avoided having breakfast there on the days I was at and chose the lounge on 5th floor. The exterior of the hotel looks really dated and if not of the location , I am pretty sure it wouldn’t draw in the guests. Given that there are still many international hotel in Hangzhou, Sofitel would need to work hard to draw in the guests
I bet this was a Grand property a few years or decade ago. It Does have a great location, but so sorry ownership doesn't invest in upkeep. The room was very quiet at night. Kudos! I tried speaking English with Bar staff (3), Conceirge (2) and found help only at front desk. Tried the 5th floor lounge, but they wanted to charge 180RMB for the final 20minutes of F&B. Yikes!! I was hoping to relax, not race. The last Sofi I stayed at was in Miami, Fl. Remember it was exactly the modern French Impressionistic this property is NOT. When entering the room on second floor, hit was an aweful smell from bad plumbing, or lack of a vent pipe. The carpet was decades old by appearance, curled and pulled up along the walls. This reservation was booked through Hotels dot Com. IMHO, think Mngt is trying to lure in guests with discounts to fill empty rooms, when they should think about luring through Renuvation. Too Bad, disappointment with such potential.
