in November 2017 we stayed here as a party of 6, all of us are very disappointed and angry at our treatment here.i will try to make this a balanced review despite my experience. first of all the location, right over a very seedy sex shop in an area filled with groups of intimidating, suspicious looking undesirable groups of people from every corner of the world but Germany. there were groups of men in almost every shop doorway eyeing up our three wives and or our luggage. those doorways that did not have men in them had doped up prostitutes soliciting any man walking alone, very seedy and unsettling. my main problem however was the very poor customer service we received upon arrival. the six of us went to the front desk to book in only to be told that we had only booked three guests, so we had been charged a surcharge for one person occupying a double room ( x3) not only that but we had to pay a further surcharge to allow the other three members of our party to stay.we actually booked 6 adults in three double rooms with a lead name for each room the staff were unwavering in their attitude and unwilling to help, as we were in a strange city/country we had no alternative but to pay the extremely exorbitant 217 euros per room for the two nights. just to compound matters there were no tea or coffee facilities in the room, just a bottle of fizzy water, which if we had used, a further 4 euros would have been added to our bill. to be fair once we gained access to the hotel via the locked door it was very well kept, clean and airy, rooms were spacious enough and the breakfast buffet had plenty of good standard food. unfortunately the hotel has five floors but the lift only goes up four, we were on the fifth floor, my wife has bad knees and on the friday night the lift was not operating at all. the desk staff who all spoke english just shrugged when we asked why. non of our party would ever consider staying there again and would advise any prospective guests to seek an alternative hotel and area. apologies for the long winded review but we all feel so strongly about this issue, hopefully you have read this review in its entirety and do not fob it of as a bitter review, i promise you it is not, its hopefully a heeded warning to fellow travellers.
Booked this hotel on booking.com then afterwards found out that was located above a sex shop and i panicked. Let me tell you if you’re not travelling solo is perfect. I was on my own and still didn’t have any issues apart from being scared of walking the street on my own when it was dark, but this area is quite safe as long as you mind your own business. The street is full of all sorts of arabs shops, then loads of sex shops and some poor souls that live on these streets. It’s 2 minutes away from Hamburg HPF, 10 minutes walk from Rathaus. Wifi is great, breakfast is ok (could be a bit richer) reception has a 24hrs cover and 90% of the staff is helpful. If you’re looking to book a place where to crash at night for a couple of days this is perfect. If you’re looking to spend more time in your accomodation I recommend somewhere else then.
The hotel is very close to the main train station, which is really convenient, as it is so close to the center of Hamburg and all metro lines go thru there. The street Steindamm is full of poor souls. Hookers, homeless people, poor people, but the atmosphere is not threatening at all. My son and I walked up and down the street several times a day and asked for help to buses and direction and everybody was friendly. The hotel is on top of a sex cinema and hookers tricked in the hotel doorway, but there is a lock and camera at the hotel entrance, to prevent other than guests coming in. Our room had shared bathroom, but we never met anybody else, so can't complain. The room was small, but had everything necessary and the breakfast was fine.
I stayed on a Friday night, booked on booking com, supposed to be cheap at 75 euros a 50 percent from there 150 euros?? I would say its one of the worst deals I have every got for 105 Australian dollars, the room was 10 sq m, its tiny, like many other reviews have mentioned I would also mention that it is not a good location at all, drunks and very unsavory characters everywhere as well as many sex workers and street traders of dubious legal residency status. When I got up in morning I was greeted by a man in his underpants in the hallway I guess he had come from a shared bathroom, I had a bathroom in my room but try factoring that into 10 square meters. Walls also very thin and I could here people in the hallway clearly with my room. Lift stopped at 4th level, had to walk up stairs to 5th floor, basically the entire roof space must have been converted to tiny rooms. I would say this place is pretty crappy.
When we arrived, we were given room 107, which was about 2 meters from the front desk. It was quite noisy, and the room smelled very bad. Nonetheless, we decided to go out and have a look round Hamburg centre. When we got back in at night, we found our heating wasn't working, so we asked to change rooms. We were told there were no rooms available, and that we had to stay there - even though the receptionist agreed the room was unsuitable due to it being very cold (no heating and -7 degrees outside) and smelling very bad. This lead to multiple calls from the receptionist to the manager, who kept refusing to let us change rooms, even though the receptionist said there were free rooms elsewhere in the hotel. After also finding that out that the hot water wasn't working, we finally were allowed to change rooms. By this time, it had taken 2-3hours to sort out, and it was around midnight. In all of our time staying in the hotel, we received no apology from the manager, and have since tried to contact the manager multiple times, but received no reply.
We travelled as a young couple and got an absolute bargain for this hotel (£50 for a double room for 2 nights including breakfast!), so we were not expecting much. We had a small double room with a shared bathroom which was just across the corridor. The room and the bathroom were both spotless and loads of towels were provided. The bathroom was regularly cleaned so it didn't really feel like you were sharing it. The TV had loads of channels and the bed was comfy. The breakfast was varied with cereals, fruit, yoghurt, eggs, toast, meats and cheeses and you could go back as many times as you liked. It was also open until 10.30 which was good. The hotel was only about 5/10 mins walk to the main centre of hamburg and only 5mins from the train station. The area felt safe and we disagree with previous comments about it being intimidating or dodgy - it was fine! Overall a great stay.
I spent one night recently at the Novum Hotel and it wasn´t bad. The room was nice and clean. The bed was comfortable and the breakfast was very good. I would certainly recommend it for short stays. The location was ok but not great.
Pros: clean, good breakfast, very central Contra: just before we got out for dinner there was no hot water for shower. The reception could not help; if you get a room on 5th floor you have to carry your luggage one floor up as the elevator stops on the 4th; the cleaning personal close the heater in the morning, so in a cold day it is not a good experience to get into the room.
Value budget Hotel in abit of sleezy area, but safe.Allso near main Train station and U Bahn,so handy for getting around. Breakfast was good, and the staff seemed very nice, pleanty of places to eat in the area as well
I will start with the good points , the rooms are clean and there is a wifi. It's pretty much thats it . The Bad is the location is in a bad dirty area . There is a sex shop under the hotel . The entrance is in the first floor means that you need to carry your luggage one floor on the stairs with you . The last floor have no elevator and yes you have to take the stairs from the 4th floor to the 5th. The elevator can take by most 2 adults meaning if you are carrying things with you it can only take one person . If you open the windows which are very small to have some oxygen in the room at night the noises stay till 1 am . The safe in both rooms that i booked with my family are broken . One room the window can be open only half way only and the bathroom in the other room is very small designed in a very strange way. Over all i really dont know how they have received the three stars i only can give it one star by max one and half.
